What to tip bag handlers at pier in NYC?

$5 would be the minimum per bag, i would think.

tip less, only if you don't care if you'll ever see your bag again.

i usually give them 10-15 regardless of the port from which we're sailing

you tip $10-$15 in total for a collection of three or four bags?

or you tip $10 - $15 per bag, which is incredibly generous.

Not per bag.

no, just  a tip between 10-15 dollars. in reality, all they are doing is placing your bags on a dolly along with other passengers bags, and dragging them to a do off point.

that being said however, if i'm leaving from an airport that has a sky cap check in, i usually give him $20, although my wife and i usually  only check in one bag each. it's probably a very silly notion, but i think if i give the skycap a tip (especially if we're sailing from a european port, that there a much better chance of our bags arriving safely

I'll pull your bag to the cart AND give your wife a quick backrub.

We also tip the skycap $10 in total.

It’s a good thing I do carry on only as I could never stomach these tip amounts for baggage handlers.

You really don’t have to give them anything. Or $2, whatever. They may be extra rough with your bags and drop them a couple times, but it’s not worth their time and energy to do anything worse than that. 10 seconds later they will have forgotten all about you, and your bags will be on the same cart as the Louis Vuitton matching set whose owner tipped them $100.

Based upon my non-scientific observations, over half of the passengers don't tip them anything.  Anything I give them will make me one of the good folks.😎

Our observations also.

Been a while since I cruised out of NYC. Is $5 per bag about what is expected when I hand off my bags to bag handlers at the cruise pier?? More? Less?

Nothing us 'expected' just tip what you want and don't worry about what oterhs do.  It does not matter in the elast. If you give them money they are not going to turn it down!
