Art auctions are back!

Well, at least sort of.

Art instructor onboard posts some of her work in the "Artist's Loft".  Passable stuff, bright colors in the style of Picasso (but not really).  Then I notice that each has a little notice, giving the title of the work, the artist, and the PRICE.  Suffice to say, they didn't seem to be selling.  So the ship runs a silent auction, with minimum bids, to move the artwork.

Can Park West be looming?

Nothing new about that. The artists-in-residence often have their work on display and “for sale.”

You are NOT on Princess! NO AUCTIONS. As FF said this is a part of the cruise enrichment program Oceania offers to the guests and of course to benefit the Artists. The paintings are most often excellent and we have friends as well as ourselves who have purchased original paintings or prints or customized, 1 of 1, prints.  A great way to spend some available SBC 🤪. We have fallen in love with Graham Denison’s palette knife paintings 😇👍. He and Shuna are on Riviera for 2+ months at a time, especially sailing in Europe since they live in Spain.
All in all, just enjoy the Oceania experience.

Nothing will be subtle if Park West is involved.

First cruise  on Oceania??

Nope.  Just never had seen prices on the art, and most assuredly never had an auction for them.  With minimum bids.

You missed the part where I noted that there was a silent auction for the "art".

The artist in residence on the ATW segment we did spent a lot of time,  ahead of the first class, hanging her work.  This let people see her style before her lessons began.  The artworks were priced, but there was no sales pressure at all, and certainly no silent auction.

Interestingly, on a Cunard transatlantic the art class had a shoe at the end of the week and someone bought work from one of the students.  The work wasn’t, advertised as for sale, but someone asked nicely.  Not everyone who paints on board Cunard is a beginner.  That may also be true of Oceania.

I'm missing the reasoning behind how an artist selling their work is a "silent auction". The boutiques sell products they didn't have anything to do with making and have sales; are they auctioning items and lowering the starting bid.? Just not following the OP's logic.

Also not advertised in Currents and only in the Artists Loft so need to seek them out.....provides nice examples of the work the artist is teaching

So you are saying that a silent auction was announced and there were sign up sheets for your bids on the art work in the loft......I thought you indicated that the artist had put a price on the pieces in case someone was interested in purchasing.  The artwork round the ship is definitely not for sale so you would only have seen prices on the art work in the loft.  Perhaps you misunderstood when you saw a price on the art work and assumed it was like the silent auction art work on other ships.....

Actually, sometimes their art for sale can be seen in the long hall either side of the entry to Jacques on the O ships.

We bought a painting that the in-residence artist had been painting and finished on our NY to Montreal trip.  There were prices on the paintings he was selling.  He had one more trip from Montreal to Miami and then he was going home.  He had been on the ship for over a year.

Yes we have also bought Graham Denison's painting.  He and his wife are such great people to meet and talk to.

Yes.  There were prices, but apparently they weren't selling.  So the CD announced - multiple times - that there would now be a silent auction for the art on the wall in the loft.

@davencl

We were recently on Vista and our next cruise is also Vista and then Nautica so we will not see Graham and Shuna until 2025, major bummer.  One evening 6 of us had dinner in the GDR and had a wonderful time. You are right, GREAT PEOPLE!

When we were on Marina recently, I went to the artist loft to inquire about classes.  The paintings by the resident artist were on display with posted prices. Previously I never saw that.  Looked like the mass market art displays before auctions.  Since I didn’t like the paintings, I walked out and never pursued spending time on the ship painting.  Art auctions are a real turnoff for me.

With all the  wonderful artwork on Oceania  I can not see them bring back Park West 😲

True dat, but wonderful is in the eye of the beholder.  Based on our post-"Oceania Next" cruise aboard Riviera last October, one is compelled to mention that at least PW's stuff has some color to it.  FDR has clearly gone down the "grey/white/black is the new color palate" rabbit hole.  Yes, it's au courant, but it's like being inside a 1930s B&W "Flash Gordon" episode.

I have read over and over about the "great" art on Riviera. I am not really a prude but the over abundance of nudes is not good to me. Our first cruise, and I am heading out on my 10th in August, we had our muster station in the casino bar and I was repulsed the whole time I had to sit there. I swore then I would never voluntarily sit there again and have not with several cruises on Riviera. The statement Beauty is in the eye of the beholder is very true in this case. Julia

Try some streaming channels.

See TCM. They had the Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon serials of the mid-late 1930s on over the past year. They just finished the WW II Batman serial. (Saturday mornings.) I've seen Flash Gordon on another channel recently (something like the "Elvis"?)

I remember probably those same casino bar pix from our first Riviera cruise in 2014.  Picasso lithos (or faux copies) from what one might call his "priapic" period.  We weren't offended by them but.....one needn't be a prude to sense they were out of place aboard an Oceania ship.  There are about a jillion pieces of art extant that could be hung without actively offending even a few passengers.

We did not venture to find out during our second Riviera cruise in 2022 whether they are still on display there.  But as they were B&W, it wouldn't be surprising.
