I think the 12" dimension is actually bigger. My laptop is 9"x14" (just measured it) and fit without tilt. The 10" may be a little small too as I remember putting things next to my laptop.

The equivalent of the US standard chicken in UK is called a Foul. (Yes, that's the spelling regardless of the pronunciation.)  It comes in two designations: the Foul of Commons and the Foul of Lords, the latter being the stuffed version.
