Has anyone purchased the plus package for less than $60 per day? (in the US)

We might get a bit more insight if a CC Member reading this thread has a 10-night booking with Standard Fare and checks the cost of upgrading to Plus in the Personalizer.  Hopefully a different ship and voyage than the OP.  @Esjung1, do mind sharing your ship and departure date?  Perhaps a CC Member with a 7-nighter or 14-nighter at Standard Fare could also check and see what they would be charged if looking to upgrade.  I would expect any guest waiting until embarkation day will be charged $60/pp/day, less a flat $10 (Medallion shipping credit).

I'll be on a 10 day panama canal solo. Checked the price for one - $609 (I have insurance)

Hmm... not sure the math on that one, but seems like $540 plus an odd amount for the insurance (not exactly 12%, presuming you have the Princess Premium and don't get the Platinum discount).

Wonder what the deal is based on?

I am already booked for the cruise, a free cabin with some perks. I purchased insurance that is only $39 thru Princess. I am Elite so assumed I'm upgraded to the Platinum plan - no way to tell as it's only listed as "travel protection". I was pricing Princess Plus (not Premier) and the price comes up $609.

Okay, I am now awake and am capable of making a few more thought out comments.  My $42 for insurance is because I booked my voyage in a suite.  I hadn't considered "total" fare would be different for someone in, say a, interior cabin.  DUH....

Ha!  you think Princess would "credit" you $10 for Medallion Shipping Credit?  It's the same as saying that I won't use Planks, so I want that credited to me.  Or how about the dreaded Exercise Classes.  After all, I'm on a cruise to GAIN weight.  (aka Sheldon Cooper)

Ahh.. free cabin is the answer here.  You must be one of those who get the casino cruises.  Who knows how they figure out your rate for Plus?  Regardless, it could not be $600 + insurance they are charging you, so you are also at a lower rate than expected - but could be partly due to your casino situation.

Many folks have posted here about receiving a $10 OBC when booking Plus/Premier on the ship.  PCL is being generous IMO for doing that, but it does represent the fact that Medallion was not shipped.

@Esjung1 Still doesn't account for dollar differences.  So did you bite?  and make the $540 payment...or wait to make purchase onboard? Is this US or UK value?  Please let us know when you solve this mysery.

This is US Dollars and I'm not going to bite right now, will wait until 9/29 when I board so my onboard credit can be applied (even if it costs me $120 more per cabin).

I am going to be booking a 13 day cruise soon and want the Plus Package.  Should I go ahead and include it when I book or is it best to wait in case a better price comes along?  The cruise is in December.

If you plan on having it, do it when you book.

Booking it in advance has the following disadvantages:

  • It is part of the cruise fare subject to cancellation penalty if you cancel during the penalty period after final payment.
  • Because it is part of the cruise fare, the cost of Princess Vacation Protection or third-party trip insurance will increase to cover the additional possibly non-refundable cost.
  • You cannot use OBC to pay for it in advance.

However, if you know you want it, it is easier to take care of it in advance. Paying now has the following possible advantages:

  • They may increase the cost between now and your cruise.
  • Since it is a fare increase, it may increase the commisionable amount if you use a travel agent (I'm not sure about this). If so, it may increase OBC or other discount received from the travel agent. If you're using an agent that provides OBC or discount, ask the agent.
  • According to the Princess FAQ Question 7, "These packages are capacity controlled and are available for purchase pre-cruise or on board." The Terms & Conditions say "Princess Plus is contingent on ship capacity and only available on select voyages while capacity lasts." Princess may limit the total number of Plus and/or Premier packages sold on a specific cruise because of the capacity to handle them, so it is possible that the package won't be available later. I haven't heard of this happening yet, but it could happen.

Let me add to @NavyVeteran.

You can book it when you first reserve your cruise.  All of the above apply.

You can add it to your booking later and pay the cost of the package plus insurance.  By doing this, you are able to cancel without affecting your fare and/or penalties.

You are also at risk of the rate going up.  Normally....Princess gives you months of notice.  Lately, they have been making changes that take affect days later.

I think this is akin to the funny pricing we sometimes see.  I have a 4-day cruise booked and when I check pricing upgrades it shows Plus as "For 2 guests $240" or $320 for premier.

I can't edit my post, so I'm quoting myself...I decided to purchase the Premier package since that works out to $40 pp/day.  Even though my daughter is too young to drink, it is still a decent price for the internet and extra dining perks.  I assumed I would get an error message during check-out, but it went through.  It doesn't show Plus/Premier as an add-on purchase; it changed our Cruise Fare from $450 to $770.  I assume that means no cancelations of the Premier package since the cruise is paid in full.  It did NOT add anything extra to the Vacation protection, but maybe there is a minimum cost for less expensive cruises and the percentages don't come into play.  IDK.  I booked this cruise while onboard and it was Half-Price.  I'm assuming that is why the package upgrade is half-price even though we were told only standard fares were half-price.  (A lot of other things he told us turned out to be incorrect, too.)  My husband and boys are in a cabin two doors down booked through the casino department.  Their price to upgrade is showing as $510 (plus) or $684.40 (premier) for two guests.  We will wait until we are onboard to decide on them.

Always book a cruise with a cabin you want as soon as you find it.  Prices generally go up closer to Final Payment date, but you can always check for a lower price and re-fare/re-book.  I would book the cruise Standard.  Once you have a deposit down and you have your info setup and such, you can always look at the upgrade cost to Plus and add it later or wait until on board.  I wouldn't count on any discount from $60/pp/day.  I doubt that is the norm.  You have nothing to lose by booking Standard and then adding Plus later.  If you have OBC, you could wait as the chances of a price increase for Plus between now and Dec will be similar to lottery odds.

This is a true statement.  If @pamesacruisin books with a TA that offers a discount, they will be getting a discount on the Plus which could easily save $6/pp/day.  If not, maybe they will seek out a discounting TA next time.  I would order Plus in advance for that reason as no discount when get on board as TA is not involved and earns nothing.  If I order in advance, I help my TA and myself.  OBC doesn't figure into my equation in this case (will consume it other ways).

@Esjung1 is it possible that you have Future Cruise Credits that are being automatically deducted from the total?  Just a guess.

I would say NO.  FCC's would have been applied to the cruise fare.  This is a look at an add-on option after the fact.  Also, the amount is a specific even number.

I only mentioned it because the print out from Princess shows that available FCC's will be applied if there are any.  (I've received FCC's after I've booked a cruise - because of a problem on a previous cruise.)   I realize it's a long shot.

It is true that a guest could "earn" a FCC and be posted to their account where there is an existing booking with money down.  In that case the FCC would just be more money on account, lowering the net due.  If the FCC came after FP Date and guest owes nothing, I am not sure what would happen.  My guess would be the FCC would sit on account in the member profile record until there was another booking with monies owed - or a new expense on the current booking.

I am just speculating here, but NCL recently banned alcohol sales in UK ports due to a demand for license payments from the ports.  Perhaps it is a situation similar to Texas or New York where they do not charge the drink package for those days either leaving or arriving since they will not be selling alcohol?
