What is the best way to get from Rome to the port in Ravenna?

I would suggest posting this in the ports of call forum for Italy, found here:

https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forum/464-italy-ports/

Transportation questions are frequent there.

I've taken the train from Rome to Ravenna in the past and it is fairly straightforward, but I was only traveling with an overnight bag. There is no direct route; a change of trains is required (usually in Bologna).

Renting a car is feasible,  but will likely be longer and more expensive than taking the train. You will need to get an International  Driver's  Permit (from AAA) before you leave home. Learn the Italian driving laws- particularly those regarding speed cameras, bus lanes, and ZTLs. Familiarize yourself with the opening and closing hours of the rental agencies. Those other than at airports may be closed Sundays. Take into account any extra costs: road tolls, gas (its a lot more expensive than in the US) and any drop off fees. It's a distanceof nearly 400 km. You would probably want to travel up the day before embarkation.

Trains are easier and cheaper. Most will require a change of trains in Bologna, but it's just a matter of getting off the train, looking at the signboard for the track your next train is leaving from, and walking there. Tickets bought in advance for the high speed trains can be a lot cheaper than those bought on the day of travel. The only possible downside (if you are lugging multiple massive suitcases) is that you need to handle your own luggage. But there is luggage storage in every train car. Look at the Trenitalia website for times and prices.

We're staying in Rome for two nights prior to embarking on Explorer of the Seas-June 15th. What is the best way to get up to Ravenna? Is renting a car feasible?

Hello @HelloFromIdaho and welcome to the Cruise Critic message boards!

Thank you for your new thread on the Ask a Cruise Question forum! However, it is the forum for general questions regarding cruising. Your inquiry concerns a specific port of call and was off topic there.

To help you out, your new thread has been moved to the Ports of Call - Europe - Mediterranean - Eastern & Western - Italy Ports forum where it will be on topic. The majority of your fellow Cruise Critic members that have been there frequent this forum and provide feedback here. Browse through the thread titles on this forum looking for threads of interest. You will probably find your fellow Cruise Critic members have already posted questions and received answers that may be of interest to you.

The Cruise Critic website and message boards are both great resources for new as well as experienced cruisers, and we are so glad you found us! Please feel free to browse the Cruise Critic Community categories list for the various forums. I suggest you Bookmark the page or put it in your Favorites. Please read a few threads in the different forums to get a feel for what each forum is about. Make sure you read any pinned threads (aka Stickies) on the top of the first page of threads in most forums. You will find very important instructions or information there.

Please remember the following portion from the Guidelines we all agreed to follow when registering for our free Cruise Critic memberships:

Browse Before You Post
Browse a topic first to see if your question has already been asked or answered by someone else. Also, many of the major cruise lines forums have a FAQ (Frequently Asked Question) topic that has been created by our members. Give that a try first. Browsing is your #1 best resource! Please post your messages in an appropriate topic so that you'll receive the best possible response. It is very time consuming to move misplaced messages that are in the wrong topics.

Anytime you need to start a new thread on a forum, first make sure you are in the correct forum for your topic. Word your new thread title in a way to help the members know exactly the information you seek. This greatly helps the members browsing through the thread titles and if they know the information, they will reply to you.

Also, it is best to limit each inquiry to only one topic such as one cruise line, one ship, one port of call, etc. and of course, on the correct forum where it will be on topic. You will get more replies that way. Be sure to mention your cruise line, ship, port or sail date in your inquiry if that sort of information will help your fellow Cruise Critic members help you.

To find your fellow Cruise Critic members sailing with you on your cruise, you need to post on the specific Cruise Critic Roll Call thread for your cruise line, ship and sail date. Please read What is a Roll Call? Everything you Need to Know and How To: Create A New Roll Call. For more information about our famous Roll Calls, please read the Roll Calls and Our Policy Regarding Facebook and Roll Calls sections in the GuidelinesWe also have the following oldie but goodie Cruise Critic article you might enjoy8 Reasons to Join a Cruise Critic Roll Call

The specific Roll Call thread for your cruise is the ONLY place on the Cruise Critic message boards where you and your fellow Roll Call thread members are allowed to post personal ads about sharing private tours, excursions or transportation with each other to save money. There is a "captive audience" there since you are all sailing together! Your fellow Roll Call thread members may have important information posted in your Roll Call thread. Especially those that may have sailed your line, ship or itinerary before. Also, they may have already posted share requests that may interest you. Roll Calls are for people to get to know one another before their cruise. Therefore, there will be all kinds of discussion! Roll Calls belong to everyone on the Roll Call thread. There is no designated leader or owner. It does not matter who started the thread.

Rome2Rio is only ever a good starting point, it leaves out some options and/or specific needed information, and some of the results are just plain wrong, so always double check what you find with the actual service providers.

I would consider driving, and weigh it against the train (the available bus options get you to Ravenna too late for embarkation) in terms of time, cost, ease, and comfort.  What among those variables are most important to you for this decision?

Keep in mind that the train also requires a shuttle or taxi from Ravenna to the port (nearly eight miles).  Check with rental car companies to see if they will bring you to the port or if that will also require a taxi or shutle.

For our cruise in 2023, we flew into Rome and then trained up to Ravenna.  Similar to what others have mentioned, I think the most straight forward train route would be a high speed option from Rome to Bologna and then the hourly commuter train from Bologna to Ravenna.  Our trip from FCO airport to Ravenna took just under 4.5hrs total with the Fiumicino to Bologna segment taking just over 3hrs, about a 15min connection, and about a 1hr ride onto Ravenna.  The connection in Bologna can be a bit overwhelming as it's a large station with the high speed trains in a different section the other trains.

We've only driven in Tuscany for a different land trip.  Personally, I found driving outside the cities/towns pretty reasonable while driving in them somewhat chaotic.  Some of our best memories though were from that drive just being able to take our time and make random stops.

Thanks Milhouse. Did you make this train trip the day you embarked in Ravenna?

No, we travelled up the day before on a Sunday and then boarded the ship on Monday midday.  It gave us a bit of time to check out the town and do the mosaics circuit.  There was also flooding in the Ravenna region during the weeks leading up to our cruise and we weren't sure how well the transportation/rail links were recovering so we wanted to get in a day before.
