Would MIA be the best option or is there any car rentals closer to port.

what does a taxi run from the port to the airport, party of 4.

thank you

There have been car rental operations downtown in the past...you need to do a little searching. Check Enterprise,  for example, they are known for their off airport rental offices, and cheaper rates.

Off airport rates are almost cheaper...if for no other other reason than fewer taxes applied.

We just recently (twice) rented from both Avis & Budget at their location's on

99 Southeast 2nd Street, SE 1st Ave at, Miami, FL 33131...

They share the same building and are very close to the port and offer a comp shuttle to and from POM. No need for the hassle at MIA.

If you're a Costco member check their website...this is where we get the best rates. Even though at times MIA is a few $'s cheaper than the offsite offices it's not worth the hassle and then paying for transportation to get there.

I don't think it will matter where you rent. You'll most likely get hit with a one way rental charge due to that distance.

We just due to an unforeseen circumstance to get to our POM cruise. Had to fly into TPA instead of MIA and rented a car to drive from Tampa to Miami and we had no one way rental charge.

The downtown Miami rental car locations are very small and very busy on cruise turnaround days. It's so much easier to rent a vehicle from the Miami International Airport Rental Car Center across from Miami International Airport. The facility is open twenty four seven and every major rental car company has an office there. Plenty of rental cars available too! So much easier to rent from there.

Renting from the downtown location was very easy for us...twice recently. We were the first in line at POM at the rental curbside location outside the terminal doors. On shuttle for Avis/Budget and walked in and first in line. Out the door quickly with our car. It's just timing. MIA location can have long lines for rentals....busy airport.

I have rented vehicles at both locations. One time the line for service at the downtown Budget location was literally down the block. That same time there was a shortage of vehicles and that was in January 2019 when there were six ships docked at the Port of Miami. Personally even with a line I prefer the Miami International Airport Rental Car Center.

took my husband 1.5 hours at FLL at budget so we would prefer to avoid airport

Check the various rental websites, too.  Depending on where the rental cars are right now, and where the rental companies need them, they will often waive the drop off / one way fee.

That works extremely well from season change in Florida. In May / June, the rental companies offer rock bottom one way rentals from Florida to the Northeast and Midwest.  And reverse in November and December.
