Our captain turned off the motor, pulled out his lunchbox, made himself a liverwurst sandwich and we oo-ed and ah-ed for the next hour.

Someone asked me later in the day how many whales I saw out in the fjord. I don’t know! Unlike the Princess crew members, they don’t wear name tags.

Yvonne, I'm loving your photos and following along on this wonderful journey. We're jumping ship from NCL due to some disappointments so our next cruise will be on Princess. (We actually had a Princess trans-Pacific scheduled but had to cancel as DH is going through some medical issues right now. He will be okay, but our next cruise is just postponed for a bit.) I'm so enjoying all of your food and drink pics and your impressions of the entertainment. You make me feel like I'm right there with you. Greenland looks incredible! Thank your for including us! You are the best.

Hi Niki

I hope your husband heals well and quickly. I loved the photos of the two of you on your Pride of America trip report! It has caught my attention how caring and attentive the Princess crew are with passengers who need some extra support with mobility or differing needs so you will be well cared for when the time comes to cruise again.

Greenland is incredible and I’m still so grateful for the chance to be there even for one day.

Thank you for reading!

The food alone is putting ncl to shame!

I am enjoying your review very much to the point I’m researching cruises for next summer or fall

The food looks absolutely delicious! If Princess had a Haven-type concept and/or (maybe just or) a more relaxed dress code, I'd be looking at them for our next cruise!

I can't wait to follow along on your journey, though!

I was a big fan of the ncl buffet.  Now...the island princess tops "The MsTabbyKats" buffet list.

Just here to say that I am not a fan of NCL's buffet, but Princess...well Princess, now that they serve up a buffet I think I'd devour!!

Looking back at my photos from today, I laughed to see the first photo of Greenland was this

Why is that I'm so not surprised about this? Those look yummy!

It is due to sentences like this next one that I will never be a mystery writer:

I had an absolutely amazing, joyful and awe-inspiring day in Nuuk!

I walked for 5 hours in the morning and early afternoon, came back to the ship for a bowl of delicious soup then headed out for an afternoon excursion which was, simply put, incredible.

I will continue the posts about Nuuk tomorrow. There are waterfalls, whales and icebergs to come.

For now, I’m heading to bed. It is almost 11pm and I’m a wee bit bit tired.

And it's sentences like these, and so many others, that have me speed reading about your journeys. I just can't wait to see what's ahead! I cruise through (see what I did there @schmoopie17), yet every word hits me. Then, you'll write a post and I'll just stop to read and consider how wonderfully well you create stories.

As always, thanks!

I don’t know how much more relaxed you would want a dress code to go. We show up in jeans and short sleeve shirts every night. Are you saying they should allow thongs etc.

Your ability to capture beauty in everyday (to the people who live there) things and surroundings gives your "lives" something special. I suspect a majority of tourists would not take time to absorb the details you highlight to us, perhaps thinking "there's nothing there to see", but your photos and insights say the opposite.

Just shorts and a t-shirt.

Alas, I don't want to waylay the beautiful live.

The Mother of the Sea is a beautiful sculpture located near the colonial harbour. The sculpture is partially covered by water at high tide, so it's best viewed at low tide.

@bob&france, I am pretty sure Crab Shack is NOT a casual dining option as on all my past sailings with this pop up the cost was $39 plus 18% gratuity. SaltyDogGastroPub and Alfredo’s pop up ARE casual dining venues on THIS ship.

Other Princess ships may have Alfredo’s and SaltyDogGastroPub as standalone venues. I believe Ruby and Emerald have SaltyDogGastroPub in section of Wheelhouse, but is only open for dinner service.

Salty Dog was a pop up for lunch.

I had the same concern as you about how to dress. I packed the same clothes, albeit fewer, for this Princess cruise as I would for an NCL cruise.

Before we go to our next spectacular place in the fjord, let me tell you about our captain and guide.

For anyone who read my “live” from Iceland and Norway last summer, remember how the bus driver from Keflavik said one word the entire journey (“seatbelts?”) Well, I think our boat captain in Nuuk is related to that bus driver. As we were about to leave the harbour he turned around, took us all in with one glance, said “yes” and we were off.

Our young guide, Nina, did the talking. Both Nina and Captain Christian were born and raised in Nuuk. They operate boats year-round since the harbour and fjord does not freeze. Their first language is Greenlandic which is akin to Inuktitut spoken by the Inuit of Canada. Nina and Christian also speak Danish and English.

Christian likes to make his boat go fast so we zoom across the fjord, zipping by icebergs,

Nina explained that Greenlanders categorize icebergs into white ice, blue ice and black ice. She pointed out this as an example of black ice because in the 8 months of the year where Greenland experiences darkness they are not visible in the water.

If iceberg glory is a thing, that’s how I felt out on that little wooden boat in the enormous fjord

I stopped feeling the cold and inhaled the stunning beauty of the ice, captivated and enchanted with every displacing movement, every change in blue, every grain of ancient dirt embedded in the thick ice.

When Nina opened a hatch on the boat to retrieve a net, she showed us the captain’s supply of dried whale meat and whale skin.

Why did she need a net?

For the whiskey they were going to enjoy later!

We were invited to lick the bergy bit and some people did. They said it was salty. I don’t kiss cods and I don’t lick pre-licked ice.

Hi Sweetie,

It is 90 F right now where I live and very smoky.  My weather forecast for the rest of July is hot and smoky.

Have you heard from Dad?  I pray that he is doing okay.

I got a note this morning from a former Norwegian Captain who lives in the upper part of Vancouver Island now.  He says where he lives water restrictions for lawns are now in place.  Tommy is currently a Captain with the B.C. Ferry system, sailing mostly the Inside Passage.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful adventure.  Love all the whale and ice berg pictures.

BIG BIG BIG BIG HUG

Love and prayers always

Whatever else happens on this trip doesn’t even matter. I’m not saying that with sarcasm at all. I just mean that for me, this time in Nuuk with the iceberg filled me with so much joy the whole trip was worth it.

As we made our way out of the fjord Nina spoke more about the ice and whiskey then told us about a traditional Greenlandic drink, Greenlandic coffee.

The ingredients are

Grand Marnier

Kahlua

Whiskey

cream (to represent snow)

brown sugar

coffee (to represent darkness and winter)

Our man of few words captain added that he likes Cointreau in his!

This drink is lit on fire to create the  dancing colours of the Northern Lights in flame.

I asked Nina what the name for this drink is and she replied, “Greenlandic Coffee!”

She also pulled up a recipe on her phone
