About 20 years ago, it was also slang among the young for rubbish. I don’t whether it is still used thus.

So after eight responses, I would like to know if women are permitted to wear trousers, slacks or other garment that doesn't fit into the skirt, dress, gown or kilts category.

Sorry for the humour.

Of course ladies can wear trousers. In fact, the only time I wear a dress is on a formal occasion when I wear a long dress.

I always wondered what pot holders were.

This is has made me LOL! In my neck of the woods pants can mean either -

knickers, drawers, undies or

trousers, kecks, slacks and of course another word for unsatisfactory!

I think the OP is genuinely asking about trousers as evening wear and Yes you can - whatever the dress code!

As soon as I saw the question, I knew this was going to be a fun thread.

@artvlay, here are the dress codes for both the Smart Attire and Gala Evenings. Trousers are acceptable at all times. Pants are a personal choice. 🫢

OMG, now we are on to vests.

How about jumpers, lifts, crips, trainers?

My favorite UK phrase: I need to hoover the floor.😉

Which is why I gave her a genuine answer before collapsing into frivolity. 😀

I absolutely love language!  The best jokes are language or punctuation related.

And I say hot pads.  I worked in a kitchen for years and that’s what everyone called them (pot holders, oven mitts, oven gloves, etc.)

What is a vest in the uk?

Also, I want to see the men in skirts 😋
