DrJamba Posted July 13 #4 Share Posted July 13 My daughter (13) and I did a glacier dog sled ride by helicopter back in 2005 leaving from Skagway on an competing cruise line. From @Mtn2Sea's pictures, looks like they got a gorgeous day. Ours, not so much. In fact, ours was the last helicopter to land before they closed the landing zone due to thick fog. But we had a great time with the dogs and the musher allowed my daughter to drive her rope-connected sled towed by the main sled carrying me and the musher. Very worth the money. Rare TiogaCruiser Posted July 14 #6 Share Posted July 14 (edited) We did that one in 2009- so a while ago. At the time I was able to book us directly with the helicopter company. We had a 9:00 a flight to ourselves. It was spectacular, and well worth it. We were the only visitors (2 of us) at that time and it had just snowed. We got the musher and a sled to ourselves.😁 For about $100/pp less. The HAL shorex went out a couple hours later ( several choppers- full), then the last ones were cancelled due to winds. We were lucky we had blue skies and it felt very remote with only one other family there. We also got to stop on the glacier for a very short walk on it. I thought it was worth the cost. I saw some video's on you tube and it looks beautiful but the person told that the ride with the dogs was very short and not what she aspected. So now we are not sure if it's worth the money. Got lucky to have a gorgeous, warm day, with blue skies and crystal clear horizon. Our helicopter pilot gave us a a nice air tour of the glacier and landed us at the summer dog sled camp. We took turns riding in the sled and driving (the most fun). The best part was meeting the dogs, who are world-class athletes (in the dog world). Several of the dogs on our sled were Iditarod dogs who spend their summer in the camp to keep in shape. These dogs love people, but their true calling is to run. I was allowed to be the musher, aka driver, and I loved every moment of the experience. The actual sledding was at least 40 minutes or more. Fabulous! bartexas Posted July 17 #13 Share Posted July 17 We loved it. Several photos from that day have been professionally framed together and placed in a very prominent spot in our home. They stop several times to let you switch out as the musher - not everyone on our sled wanted to, so the BH got extra turns. The guide took photos of the entire sled and dogs for everyone as well. The conversations about life up there with the people in the camp are fascinating. On our trip, there was a puppy in camp we got to hold and take photos with.
