Worried about flights due to recent Crowdstrike tech meltdown

Recommended Posts

Rarely fly, so not sure how long it takes for these disruptions to resolve. Delta is canceling 1,000 flights per day with no end in sight. Only airline that hasn’t recovered. They’re unable to track where flight crews are.

I’m going on Odyssey OTS in 8 weeks from Rome, flight connects in Atlanta. Arrive 5 days before the cruise. Do you think the situation will improve by then? No idea what I’d do if flights are cancelled. I know Southwest had issues like this a couple years ago and it took awhile to recover.

These issues already seem to be resolved on every airline except Delta. They should be resolved in a couple days if Delta is the airline you are using.

You have 5 days before your cruise. I typically only give it one.

You will be fine. If delays happen, you may need to display a little flexibility, adaptability, and patience but that is how travel is.  For your scenario you will be fine.

Two questions:  what airline are you taking?  Do you have insurance on your trip?

Jake, who probably has over 1M flight miles under his belt.

Delta from Atlanta to Rome. Have travel insurance that covers medical, baggage loss, it doesn’t cover flight cancellations.

You will be fine with a 5 day buffer. Especially if there is no connecting flight

We've had two different incidents this week because of this.  2 were going to Phoenix, flight cxd, and they went home.  Then this weekend, another flight cxd, yesterday another flight waiting on the tarmac still haven't heard whether she made it home!  Such a mess.

Just about all airlines had things figured out on Friday afternoon and have taken a couple days to get schedules back on track.

That is, except for Delta.

But 8 weeks from now? Don't spend a second worrying. Delta has been the exception, but even their self-created mess will be resolved in the next day or two.

Delta's issues are separate from this.   They have had a major malfunction in their crew tracking system.    Very similar to the Southwest meltdown not long ago.  They have lost complete control of tracking their flight attendants and pilots.   There are stories of crews (and of course, passengers) stranded in the wrong cities all over the world and not only is crew scheduling unaware of where many of these people are, but the crews themselves can't even get through to crew scheduling.

They do have some flights operating (mega-late), but Delta is a huge mess right now, unfortunately.   Thousands of flights cancelled. And according to industry sites, this will in no way be resolved "within a day or two".

Delta "only" has canceled 12% of its flights today. This compared to the last three days of 36%, 36% and 30% yesterday.

It'll be largely resolved in the next day or two.

You might check your credit card to see if you have "trip delay" insurance, just in case you're delayed more than 3-6 hours.

I doubt you'll have a problem, but if you're really super worried about it, buy another ticket on a different airline and make sure it's refundable to the same payment method (not just a flight credit), and that way if delta cancels or delays your flight, you can get a refund from delta and hop on the other airline.
