Tristan Posted September 11, 2006 #1 Share Posted September 11, 2006 I have a TA holding cabins for my family and I on the Noordam, and she asked if we prefer Port side or Starboard side. Which is better? Is there any difference? Thanks so much.

scopewest Posted September 11, 2006 #3 Share Posted September 11, 2006 Grab your itinerary and see which way the ship is heading and which way is east and west in terms of sun. Now figure out which side of the ship your cabin will face east (or west) the most. Do you want morning or afternoon sun? If you're in an oceanview this is not as big as deal as it would be if you have a balcony cabin. If you don't care, toss a coin! And yes, you will still have sunshine if you face east and it's 4 p.m., but it won't be pouring in on you, so to speak. I'm sure the sunrise/sunset lovers will chime in as well. WNYCRUISER Posted September 11, 2006 #4 Share Posted September 11, 2006 What??? She didn't ask Port, Starboard or Aft??? Must be the aft is full! Agree with Ruth, it really doesn't matter much. If you don't get the view of what you want from your room, there is plenty of room out on the decks on both sides of the ship!
OceanLiner Posted September 11, 2006 #5 Share Posted September 11, 2006 We always go first the midship location, then we look at everything else.
Sea King Posted September 11, 2006 #6 Share Posted September 11, 2006 Really depends if you're left handed or right handed:rolleyes: IMO: unless you've been on a number of cruises and have a preference, really doesn't matter IMO just remember: if you sail out of New York and want to see the Statue of Liberty from your balcony, book starboard .. then again, you can always take the elevator (or walk:eek:) to Lido or Sports deck:)

Rare boards Posted September 11, 2006 #8 Share Posted September 11, 2006 We usually book on the port side, but our next cruise we are on the starboard. I liked the cabin number.
Big Al B. Posted September 11, 2006 #9 Share Posted September 11, 2006 I've also never really noticed all that much difference. Starboard does get the embarkation view of the statue from NYC, but it gets a nice morning view when you return. For me, I've done it enough that I enjoy watching the port skyline scene as we leave. Krazy Kruizers Posted September 11, 2006 #11 Share Posted September 11, 2006 99% of the time we are on port side. Our first we were on port side - knew about about ships way back then. Ever since we always try to get port side. JMO
Host Walt Posted September 11, 2006 #12 Share Posted September 11, 2006 I concur with those who prefer to be on the top deck sharing the experience of a big sky as we sail past the Manhattan skyline (port side) then the Statue of Liberty (stardboard side). As for which side to book, our first cruise was on the port side (by assignment, not by choice) and our second on the starboard side. By habit created on the first cruise we kept going the wrong way on the second. That's why we always book port side. (No other reason.)

elmorejj Posted September 11, 2006 #14 Share Posted September 11, 2006 On all of our many cruises, we have been in a port side cabin. Maybe it`s because I am left handed!! I don`t know. What I do know is, I probably would get lost trying to find a starboard cabin!!.........jean:cool:
debjo Posted September 11, 2006 #15 Share Posted September 11, 2006 For some reason, we always seem to book our cabins (we book our cabins by number & not categories) on the port side. It's not a left-handed issue because we're right handed. Perhaps I should purposely book a starboard cabin to see if there is a difference?!?!? AAAAmerican Posted September 11, 2006 #16 Share Posted September 11, 2006 How about a Captains View Inside and Fore is no bore anymore than aft is daft where you see past. You always learn when your stern.:D
srzpoo Posted September 11, 2006 #17 Share Posted September 11, 2006 Portside is against land and Starboard-side is oceanside. If you want to sit on a balcony while docked, it is much hotter with less breeze. If you want to see the town without leaving the ship then pick portside. Enjoy! RuthC Posted September 12, 2006 #18 Share Posted September 12, 2006 Portside is against land and Starboard-side is oceanside. Not necessarily. The ship can dock with either side to the pier---sometimes it even changes week to week at the same pier.

cruznon Posted September 12, 2006 #21 Share Posted September 12, 2006 I agree with scopewest. I always look at itinerary map and decide which side to book. But I really prefer the aft!
Aussie Gal Posted September 12, 2006 #22 Share Posted September 12, 2006 We always look at the itinerary and work out from that which will be the best side to be on. We have had equal port and starboard cabins and even though I am left handed, I do prefer starboard. Jennie
Rare Copper10-8 Posted September 12, 2006 #23 Share Posted September 12, 2006 Port side is always better in case of inclement and outright bad weather! The ballast tanks are located on the starboard side, hence in case of increased rolling and pitching at times of significant swelling (also known as swells), the ballast is activated (same idea as the stabilizers although the ballast contains a purple dye-marker). When this occurs, the port side of the ship provides a better and more comfortable ride:) Port side pax are happy campers!
