kruzerci Posted February 12, 2007 #1 Share Posted February 12, 2007 This looks kinda scary! Look how the Celebration looks in this picture, is it just me or does it look like it is about rusted our and pretty banged up. Thank goodness I'm a Royal Caribbean cruiser :D . http://image55.webshots.com/155/1/95/64/2789195640080150150IlchNe_ph.jpg

Cruising89143 Posted February 12, 2007 #4 Share Posted February 12, 2007 I just saw this ship in Nassau in December and she looked great. No rust showing. From time to time ships do show rust.

That picture may have been from a while back, but I've never seen one with that much rust showing.

When you are dealing with the harsh elements of salt water and air, it is a constant battle to keep these ships looking good.
PhoenixCruiser Posted February 12, 2007 #7 Share Posted February 12, 2007 And don't forget about the Grandeur, she's had a dent for how long now ;) ###

Jewel didn't have that at all when we were on her less than a year ago. http://travel.webshots.com/photo/2699604460074361248TLzCLU Great pictures of the Sovereign by the way. Aquahound Posted February 12, 2007 #10 Share Posted February 12, 2007 Try this one http://travel.webshots.com/photo/2789195640080150150IlchNe I thought that pic looked familiar! I took that picture while it was tied up in Key West. It was taken about a year ago. And yes, the ship did look like crap. It looked even worse in person. I'm assuming they've painted it since then. Enchantment 04 Posted February 12, 2007 #11 Share Posted February 12, 2007 I think the ship is just plain ugly compared to any other ship.
time4u2go Posted February 12, 2007 #12 Share Posted February 12, 2007 Looks pretty normal to me! I see a few normal waterline markings, but otherwise I don't see anything unusually bad for a 20-year-old ship.
threeofus Posted February 12, 2007 #13 Share Posted February 12, 2007 I don't think the jewel looked to bad in that photo - I thought the celebration looked a lot worse. But I agree - 24/7 salt water and a lot of sun would be hard on everything.
LAKaye Posted February 12, 2007 #14 Share Posted February 12, 2007 Plus, things can always look bad where the anchor is involved: All that iron in the chain, etc. Once it is back up in position, I guess the rust drips down....that's what the problem look like in the Jewel photos. futaba951 Posted February 12, 2007 #15 Share Posted February 12, 2007 THIS is a rusty ship. Celebration is just well used. And still making Carnival a helluvalot of money. You should be so lucky. :)

When you are dealing with the harsh elements of salt water and air, it is a constant battle to keep these ships looking good. I agree. I sailed on the Caribbean Princess in 2006. This ship made it's debut in 2004 and while we were docked in Jamaica, they were painting the exterior of the ship. These ships are constantly in salt water & extreme heat..........imagine how we feel after a long day at the beach. It doesn't take much to damage these iron giants given their constant exposure to mother nature.
FitzLA Posted February 16, 2007 #17 Share Posted February 16, 2007 I sailed on Freedom of the Seas in October. That was only 4 months after her inaugural. They were already re-staining the railings and there was quite a bit of rust already. Especially around the solaium pool. She smelled new inside, but on the outside was already showing quite a bit of wear and tear. That sea air makes it happen quite fast. They usually paint the rusted areas pretty often, but usually can't keep up with it either.
shipcafe Posted February 16, 2007 #18 Share Posted February 16, 2007 I actually think that the Holiday class ships look nice and would like to sail on one of them before they are ALL retired. I do like CCL's other classes, however, as well.

barbarah33 Posted February 16, 2007 #23 Share Posted February 16, 2007 The Celebration is one of Carnival's older ships so I would expect to see a little wear and tear. I sailed on her years ago and had a wonderful time. Friends of mine who sailed with me just went on her again this fall and said she looks good. They chose her more for the size of the ship - some people prefer the 'smaller' ships to those over 100,000 tons and the Celebration fits that category.
