New York hotels.........help

I know all the hotels in NYC are expensive, we want something mid-town. I hope some of you have stayed in NYC and can tell me what hotels are good, and what ones we should stay away from.

When? The same hotel room can go from $179 per night in off season to $500 per night in season and that is for a simple moderate hotel and nothing fancy.

Don't even think about relying on what other people have paid in the past. Manhattan hotel prices are skyrocketing due to demand and will continue to climb in price with no end in sight.

What is your budget and what are your dates?

Labor Day through New Years is peak season and you'll be lucky to find a room at a two star hotel (Best Western, Courtyard, Holiday Inn) for under $300 per night.

Hi,

We stayed at the algonquin last summer. It was the best, really. Right in the middle of Times Square. We walked everywhere! The hotel has such history. It is the oldest working hotel in NYC.

The beds were heavenly, the staff the best and you can't beat the location.

Madelinerose -- this is a great place to retire to and a great place to live. Off season is so much better than in season -- almost as good as a cruise. But I would rather be cruising right now. And now I'll stop compounding the ot posts.

David

Well, I'm gonna compound, sorry everyone. We take every vacation off-season, land or sea. We have a friend with a house in Bethany and we stay there a lot, with our dog. Also, compared to Baltimore, the tax break would be refreshing.

Thanks David!

Pennsylvania Hotel, 32st and 7th ave, right across the street from Madison Square Garden, 1 block from Macy's, 2 blocks from the Empire State Building. Weekday rates are $229 + tx per night. It is close to everything, reasonable for midtown, and easy to get to any port from there. ;)

You've got to be kidding, this place is an absolute DUMP.

I frequently stay at the Super 8, I have most always gotten a lower rate, closer to my arrival. So it does pay to keep checking and being willing to cancel and rebook, easy with no penalities online. My December trip last year had a rate drop of $100/night. :) This year in July dropped $40/night after initial booking.

We've stayed at the Crowne Plaza Times Square and were very pleased. This was sevearl years ago and it had just been totally refurbished with duvet covers, etc. Last year we used Hilton Honor points to stay at Embassy Suites in the financial area. It's really nice with a wonderful buffet breakfast and great location that is walking distance to Battery Park, World Trade Center, Chinatown and subways. I ditto going to http://www.biddingfortravel.com to check out which hotels people are getting by using Priceline. Also try http://www.betterbidding.com for both Hotwire and priceline.

Can anyone help me out? We are arriving in New york on 2nd Jan and sailing on the QM2 on the 3rd, our flight arrives approx 4.30pm. Would we be better staying in a hotel near the Brooklyn pier or closer to the city? As we are coming in from Australia we will I am sure sleep the night away. Are there good hotels around Brooklyn? Any ideas would be great, thanks.:)

You may want to start a new thread asking about Brooklyn hotels. Hopefully someone from the area will see your post. We've never stayed in Brooklyn so I don't know. When we are in unfamilair territory, I go to http://www.tripadvisor.com to read the reviews. (Click reviews, click on the Marriott which is #1 in the popularity ratings. Then look to the right and click "see all reviews.") Here's the link to Brooklyn hotels: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g60827-Brooklyn_New_York-Hotels.html The prices look sky high. I also check out http://www.betterbidding.com and http://biddingfortravel.com to see what hotels people are getting by using http://www.hotwire.com and also http://priceline.com. Here's hoping you have an smooth flight and that you get a nice, quiet peaceful hotel. Have a great cruise!

Have you considered other areas? After much conferring with local New Yorkers (via CC) and reading Trip Advisor, we chose to avoid mid-town. I started a thread here a couple of weeks ago. I'm afraid I don't know how to post a link but, if you are interested in my experience this month, look through the postings and find the one called . . .

NYC Financial District - Great Place to Stay!!

HOW do you DO that:confused: . Oh, thanks for the help!

Easiest way: type the text for the link, then click the blue globe icon, and in the dialog box that pops up, type the full URL.

It's probably actually easier to copy the URL onto your clipboard - find the URL (eg by doing a search), point to it with your cursor, right-click, then left-click on Copy Shortcut. (Instructions for Internet Explorer.) Then you can paste the URL into the dialog box by right-clicking the space where you'd type, then left-clicking on Paste.
