1/01/08 Brilliance of the Seas 9 Night Caribbean Cruise (1/02 to 1/11)

I really hope that it’s true what they say about doing for the whole new year whatever you are doing on January 1st. Because this January 1st I am on my way to a cruise! Of course I want to follow up by actually getting on a cruise ship! Not just spend my time

traveling to a city to fly to the port. You get what I mean – I want to do more cruises in 2008! I’ve eaten my black-eyed peas cooked with hog jowls and my greens. I’m told that will bring me health, luck and money. Health to go on my cruises, luck to find the good deals and money to pay for them!

This trip I am driving to Jacksonville, spending the night at The Jacksonville Plaza Hotel where I will leave my car for two weeks, and flying out on January 2nd for Fort Lauderdale. In Ft Lauderdale I will take a shuttle to the Port of Miami and board Brilliance of the Seas.

I left Valdosta at about 2 PM, made several stops along the way and arrived at my hotel around 6:30. This is a former Travelodge on the airport road that was a pit but has been purchased, refurbed and seems to be staffed by very nice and helpful people.

The single rooms are very small but do contain a small fridge, microwave, desk and a good TV. The one queen size bed is comfortable and has extra pillows. The bathroom is

Larger than most and everything is scrupulously clean. There is a very limited breakfast in the morning, from 6 AM till 9 AM. Cereal, juice, coffee, English muffins, apples, etc.

I had purchased my package (room, two weeks of parking and transfers to and from airport) from buyreservations.com for $66 plus taxes. The site for the hotel listed rates at $80 without the parking and transfer. I have used this company before for park-fly and cruise-park packages and had very good service. They mail you a voucher which you take to the hotel. Usually in Jacksonville I would stay at the Holiday Inn Airport but this was Gator Bowl weekend and the rooms there were $250 (normally I pay $80 to $100 including parking and shuttle). The Plaza was a good choice for a one night stay and I will use them again if the HI is full or the prices high.

There is a nice new shopping area right across the interstate from the hotel with a Wal-Mart, Ross, Office Max, etc plus lots of restaurants (Cracker Barrel, Chili’s, Sticky Fingers, etc). Lots of opportunities to buy anything you may have forgotten or just spend some time browsing. There is also a 16 screen theater.

After driving over, shopping and a dinner at Cracker Barrel I was ready to turn in for the night. Besides it was going to be 28 degrees that night and was already quite chilly.

1/02/2008 Brilliance of the Seas Day 1

After a fitful night (not because of the room or the bed just pre-cruise excitement) I was up at 5 AM. The only thing wrong with my room (and this could have easily been operator error LOL!) was that the alarm did not go off on the bedside clock. I was pretty sure that I had read the directions and set it correctly but the alarm did not go off. So it was a good thing that I was awake early just watching the news or I could have missed my flight.

The desk clerk was quite nice and called the shuttle for me while I was having my cereal.

It arrived in less than 15 minutes and I was at the airport, checked in and reading the newspaper by 7:30.

My Southwest flight was about 20 minutes late (very unusual for them) so it was 9:30 before we were in the air. Arriving in FLL at 10:30, I had my luggage and was at the Go Shuttle check in by 10:50. I had signed up for a van shuttle, $18 per person and as usually happens with this company (for me, in FLL at least) I was put in a town car with 3 other people within 10 minutes. Three of us were getting on Brilliance so we only made one stop and then it was on to the ship.

At 11:45 we were curbside at the port and I gave my two pieces of luggage to the porter. The other couple were on our roll call ( I can not remember their names, sorry) came in from BWI on Southwest and had only rec’d one bag of the three or four they had checked. As we made our way through the screening procedures we got separated and I still have not seen them again. There were two more SW direct flights from BWI arriving well before our 5 PM sail time and I hope they got their luggage before we left Miami.

I ended up at the Pier Co-coordinators office and there met The Osmonds (okay, not Donnie and Marie, but Merrill, one of the brothers, and his band) who are performing on formal night. They were on the last cruise and stayed on the do the one show and will leave at our first port. He told me how proud they all were of Marie on DWTS and how they knew she wasn’t the best dancer but they thought she had the best personality. He also said they were all very proud of her 39 pound weight loss. Very nice guys. Also met Phil Tag the comedian who did the show the first night and will be doing a late night adult comedy show later in the cruise.

Disembarkation had run really late. In fact, passengers getting off had hired my car as we were getting out at 11:45. The delay was caused by a skeleton crew of customs and immigration officers because of the holiday. There were many frayed nerves and some loud words from the embarking passengers who thought things were going too slowly or were mad that they were missing the first possible meal on their cruise! Being in the PC’s office I got to listen to a good bit of it. To the staff’s credit, they handled everything with great good grace. The PC, Kenya Morley and the Team Lead, Shavon were some of the best I’ve ever seen at keeping their cool when everyone around them was not exactly showing their best sides. I often wonder if these yelling, name calling passengers realize how they look and sound to others. Maybe a video tape of the poor behavior would make them think twice? Nah. Probably not. Most of them seem to think they are entitled to what they want, when they want it no matter how many people were there before them waiting in line. Still, my hat is off to Kenya and Shavon! Hope to run into you both again someday.

By 3:45 I am finally onboard and have dropped my things off at the cabin where the CS introduced himself and opened my cabin for me. I went up to the Windjammer to get something to eat. It was 7 AM when I had that cereal and I needed to take medicine but not on an empty stomach. They were closing at 4 but I managed to get a piece of very good Honey Dipped Fried Chicken (boneless white meat)a spoonful of mashed potatoes w/gravy (strange taste, didn’t eat that) and some really good cole slaw made with red cabbage, I tried the sugar-free key lime pie (yuck!). Then there was the Coconut Slice which seemed to be a cake with about a spoonful of flour in the whole thing and the rest coconut. No icing, just lots of coconut! Heaven.

Back to my cabin for boat drill (yeah, right!) but my card won’t open the cabin. Down to GR where they tell me to just go to my muster station and come back later. Explained I don’t know where muster station is because I can not get in my cabin. That’s okay I was told, just go to deck 5 or 6 and they will find my muster station. I went to deck 5 and was escorted back to GR. The officer who escorted me the GR and the GR people had a very

animated conversation about me and finally I was given a new room card and sent to get my life jacket.

It was all too much for me so I went to my cabin and sat on the balcony and read, called home, etc till that pesky boat drill was over. So you see, this time it was NOT my fault. I tried to go! They just made it TOO hard!!!

Afterwards my luggage had not arrived and needing liquid refreshment, I visited both Concierge Lounges, the one on deck 12 and on deck 10. Deck 10 is very, very tiny and deck 12 is a regular lounge. Both have nice staffs, hot canapés and good booze!

Naptime. Not intended but after two glasses of wine and a long day I just closed my eyes for a minute and woke up at 10 minutes till 8! I had still not rec’d my luggage so didn’t take long to brush my teeth, comb my hair and go to dinner.

I am at a lovely table for 11 on the upper deck of the restaurant, right by the railing. So far there are two Danish couples, one who lived in the states for 37 years and retired to his homeland and one couple who have never cruised (they speak little English). Then there is a younger couple from New Jersey. So for now we are 7 people at a table for 11.

Dinner was nice. I had the Vidalia Onion Tart and the Prime Rib. I ordered the beef medium rare but it arrived very rare which is fine with me. It was served with a baked potato and steamed veggies. For dessert I had Coffee Ice Cream.

Everyone at the table had long travel days so we were out by 10 PM. Nice group of people, we were just all beat.

Still no luggage so I went to GR to file a claim, giving descriptions of luggage and contents so they could look for it. All the luggage that was onboard had been delivered so no idea where it could me. Sure hope it shows up tomorrow.

Bye For Now!

You are my hero! :D After a certain number of cruises you should be exempt from those "pesky" boat drills. :D

Don't you just love the concierge lounge? I wish X had them!

Gail..........enjoyed your last "live from post", and looking forward to this one! Hope they found your luggage.....enjoy all the ports! Wish we were there!

We cruised with Enchantment04 on the Jewel in 12/05. He is on your cruise, I think. If you meet a handsome 18 year old college teen from NY named Joe/Joey, tell him Kay and John said, "hello."

What great ports to visit again!!!! I saw some questions about Baby Beach(our favorite, too). John, Mom, and I took a local bus to the small town nearby Baby Beach, and then walked from Charlie's Bar to the taxi driver's stand and had a taxi take us there, and pick us up at a set time. Then, we walked back to Charlie's, ate, and rode the local bus back. One other trip, we took the local bus to Eagle Beach, I think it was called, not crowded at all. Maybe we'll look into Brilliance for March. I have a friend who's going on the 12 night from Barcelona in September.

Enjoy the warm, sunny days!:)

Hi Gail,

I love reading your "live" posts from your cruises. It's like being there right beside you. I hope you have your luggage by now. Not having luggage delivered has always been a small fear of mine:rolleyes:

You also answered a question about the life boat drills. I actually thought they checked every cabin to be sure everyone was at the drill. I guess that is not the case:)

Looking foward to more,

Lucy

Hi Lucy :)

On most, if not all, our Celebrity Cruises, the crew took a roll call, while passengers were at their muster station, to insure everyone on the ship was there for the drill. Then if no one from a specific cabin responded, they would give that information to an officer to resolve the problem.

I have had it both ways. Roll calls can be cumbersome - on some cruises I've been on the crew jest checks each cabin and the public areas to make sure no one is hiding out.

Never had a roll call on any of my Celebrity cruises. I always assumed as Lucy said, they checked the cabins.

1/03/2008 Brilliance of the Seas Day 2

Slept like a rock. Bed is very comfortable. The duvet is not soft and cuddly like the ones on X. The ‘filling’ feel more like a hard quilt. It’s not nearly as nice as a feather or down one would be but still very acceptable. I did wake up a couple of times early in the morning but just rolled over and went back to sleep. With the terrible insomnia I’ve been having at home this much sleep is heaven. Finally got up about 9:30. Looked outside my cabin door. No luggage!

Dressed for breakfast, the Windjammer was my only choice as the dining room was closed. On the way out I spoke to the CS. He said that my luggage had been in the hall during the night but he thought it didn’t belong there so he sent it to the housekeeping locker. I also asked him about getting a lounge chair for the balcony. The cabin is at the bump out on the ship and is quite large. There are only two regular chairs on it and a small table. I was very surprised when he told me that they were no longer allowed to bring loungers onto the balconies. I questioned him further and he said something about the people by the pool not being happy when chairs were taken from there and moved to balconies. Made no sense. He assured me it was fleet wide. When I told him I just got off another RCCL ship December 18th and had no trouble getting loungers he said ‘they are having trouble getting everyone to cooperate’. I can tell you right now if I can’t get a lounge chair so I can sit out and read in comfort it will seriously impact my paying for anything other than an inside or oceanview.

I went on up to Windjammer and found some cereal and a muffin. The bananas were too green to be enjoyable and the coffee would have eaten the plating off a spoon if you left it there for more than 20 seconds. Did find some well toasted wheat bread which was nice. Would have been nicer if it was hot. Or warm.

The Windjammer is lovely and the set-up for the different stations is more workable than any I’ve seen. However, there is still the problem of finding a place to sit. Maybe it would have not been as bad if the outside areas could be used. But today is still chilly and very windy and sitting outside is not at all comfortable.

The Windjammer on this class of RCCL ship is still very, very nice. The furniture is attractive and comfortable, the lighting soft and inviting. Add that to the food station set-up and I have to say that it beats the buffet on any X ship I’ve been on.

After breakfast I stopped at the Concierge Lounge and discussed the lounge chair problem with Kathleen, the Concierge. She called housekeeping. We’ll see how that works out.

Luggage was in the cabin when I returned but unfortunately the bags were not as I had packed them. Let’s just leave it at that. Back down to the GR desk to fill out more forms. No help offered, just gave me a copy of the form.

Then it was time to hang up all the stuff that came out of the luggage. Put folded things in cubbies in closet because there are only six small drawers at the desk and they are best suited for evening bags, make-up, make-up mirror, socks, etc. This cabin is very small, about 11 ½ by 16, with not much storage. Closet has two small hanging areas, approximately 24” on one side for long hanging items and 20” on the side with two rods. In the middle are the six open cubbies which are about 12” wide. At the desk there are some tiny triangular shelves behind corner mirrors and a small cabinet over the TV. The safe takes up most of one shelf in that cabinet. There is a piece of furniture, smaller than a loveseat, maybe about the width of a chair and a half. It’s not a sofa bed so if it folds out it’s just one of those where the foam actually folds out and it’s right on the floor. If it does fold out any way at all, you would not be able to walk past it to the bathroom. If they book this (as I’m told they do) as a three person cabin, it would be VERY uncomfortable. It works best for a single or a cozy couple.

Spent some time looking around the ship plus making a stop by the Loyalty Ambassadors desk to get my Diamond coupon book. It wasn’t left in my cabin so I had to go up to see him, swear I had not received one in my cabin and wait while he filled out forms on his computer saying why he gave me a new coupon book. Sort of like signing your life away.

By now it’s lunch time and I decided to try the dining room. Talked to a couple while I was waiting in line. They were seated. The people in front of me wanted to hold six seats till their friends came down. Listened to the explanation about not holding tables. It was my turn. I told him I would like a large table and did not care to eat alone. Then we all just stood there. For about five minutes. Another woman walked up, also alone and we wait some more. Finally we are taken to a table. It’s a table for twelve with eight people seated. Two of them are the couple I had talked to in line! Then they never seated anyone in the other two seats. Very weird. Also weird was the fact that the food took forever to come. Even the waiter made note of the long time it took to get food saying he didn’t cook it, he only delivered it and the kitchen was very slow. It was way after two when we finished lunch. Food was pretty good. I had the Nsai Goring (I think that’s spelled right) and it was quite tasty, just needed a little more spice.

When I returned to my cabin I did have a lounge chair on my balcony! Yea! To bad it was too cold and windy to sit out there! Maybe tomorrow!

Stayed in and wrote for a while, read a little and then went up to the Concierge Lounge at 4 PM. I was hopeful that Kathleen, the Concierge, would help me call my travel agent so that I could get the paperwork started with my travel insurance concerning the items missing from my luggage. I also needed to get forms to file with Southwest because the ship told me they had forms for every airline except Southwest, To my surprise she was not helpful at all and told me she could only call for me if I wanted the charges put on the bill for my cabin. At $8 per minute I was not happy with that answer. On

Celebrity the Concierge’s are allowed to help you in situations like this and can give you a code to use to make a phone call. Not so, I guess, on RCCL. More bothersome than that was that she really did not even seem to care. Like I said, she previously had helped me with the chair issue. I’m left with two thoughts. Either she had a bad afternoon or it’s one problem per passenger and I had already had mine!! Whatever the reason I think I will frequent the Concierge Lounge on deck 13 from now on! Angel is very sweet up there!

After the reception I got from Kathleen I didn’t have a drink there. I did, of course, have two glasses of wine up on deck 13 with Angel. Chatted with some folks, had some canapés and then went back to the cabin to get ready for dinner. It had been a toss up as to whether I would go to formal night but I finally did decide to make the best of things and go anyway. A lot of my missing things were part of my formal outfits. Before getting dressed I did take a few minutes to post the first two days of the trip on CC. Then it was one last glass of wine with Angel and off to dinner.

We have three new people at our dinner table. We are now up to ten. Mary, Jim and their daughter Kate have joined us. They are from Rhode Island near Providence. Don’t know what he does but she teaches Literature on the college level. They are very nice and fit right in with our group.

For dinner I had Shrimp Cocktail, Chilled Pear Soup and Filet of Beef. The beef was two small slices served with mashed potatoes, asparagus and mushrooms. It was very tasty and the quality of the beef is much, much better than Grandeur. The dessert soufflé was adequate, more bready than airy so it wasn’t hard to take only a couple of bites and leave the rest. Just a side note to those who know me well: I have not had one cookie on this trip! Amazing isn’t it???

Show tonight was Merrill Osmond at 10:15. It was a VERY good show, one of the best I’ve seen on a cruise ship. He has a great voice, lots of energy and seems to truly love to entertain. In my opinion, there was a little too much about the family but maybe that’s what people want to hear. He certainly can carry a show off without it if he wants. Wish he was doing two shows this trip but he’s getting off at our first port. Glad I got to meet him and hope to see him again one day on another ship. He is very gracious and made time to shake hands with lots of fans.

This was my first time in the Pacifica Theater and it is very nice. Has an intimate feel to it and the stage has a one step step-down at the front edge that makes the entertainer seem even closer. Also makes it easier for them to come out into the audience which Merrill did several times. He shook lots of hands and told some nice stories. Only down side for anyone with mobility issues or just clumsy (like me) is the lack of hand rails on the aisles. I found it a little frightening going down but unlike some theaters on ships, I did not see anyone fall. Seating is comfortable and wide so you do not feel like you are sitting on top of the people on either side of you.

I took one lap around the outside of deck five after the show and then it was back here to the cabin where I’ve been writing this. We set the clocks forward one hour tonight. I was planning on getting up early tomorrow (or today) but it’s 2:20 new time and sleeping in is sounding better!

I don’t even think I will try to get this posted tonight, just get my beauty sleep and maybe feel like making two laps around the outside of deck five when I get up!

1/04/2008 Brilliance of the Sea Day 3

Another night of great sleep! Once again I have slept in until 9:30. CC Meet and Mingle is at 11 so I made a quick trip up to the Windjammer for cottage cheese, fresh pineapple and cantaloupe with a slice of toast. I was being generous to say that the bread yesterday was ‘well toasted’. It was the same today and was like eating a crouton! Still not close to warm. But the fruit and cottage cheese was good, I found a seat easily and all in all was a good breakfast.

After breakfast I went immediately to the disco on deck 13 for the party. People were already starting to arrive and the waiters were busy setting up canapés. Waiters also circulated and served us orange juice and fruit punch while the event coordinator checked us in and gave us our gift from RCCL. Abe the CD was there and he gave out quite a few prizes, some as small as key chains, some gift packages included a hat, travel purse, water wallet, t-shirt and luggage tags. The Grand Prize was the ‘wave’ wireless mouse. I won nothing but did get a nice travel pouch from St Louis. BTW, the gift I gave was two acrylic wine glasses for the pool/balcony and a liter of Pinot Grigio in a container like a juice or milk carton. Made it past the booze police in checked luggage!

After the M & M and the gift exchange we had eleven cabins participating in the cabin crawl with about 20 or so people viewing. We started on deck 13 and walked down, hitting the cabins on the different decks until we made it to deck 3 where we all were amazed at the waves crashing as eye level through the picture window at the head of the bed! Gives you a whole different perspective at that level.

It was lunch time so we decided that anyone who wanted would meet at 12:45 outside the dining room and we would sit together. That worked out well and we had 15 people show up making it necessary for them to give us two tables. They were smart enough to put us at the back of the dining room and we stayed, talking and getting to know one another until after 2.

I came back to my cabin and have been sitting on my lounge chair, enjoying the sun and the waves while I write this. My cabin is right next to the computer center and I discovered last night that if I prop my cabin door open I have wifi in the cabin. This cabin is small but the balcony and in-room wifi are definite perks!

Still suffering from CRS so have no idea if I’ve mentioned the library. It has got to be the smallest one afloat. I mean it’s just a little cubby hole off the atrium on deck 9. If there are 200 books I would be amazed! If you’re a reader like I am you MUST bring your own books or arrange a book exchange with your roll call group! This library is pitiful! Standard joke I’ve been hearing is ‘ I went to the library and it was closed. Someone had checked out the book!’ RCCL should be VERY ashamed of this poor excuse for a library! Send Richard Fain to a flea market and let him buy a few books for this ship! Please!!!

Gail,

Good to read your post. You sure seemed calm about no luggage.... good for you! I would be in a panic...not that it would do any good.....

Will be interested in how you think this ship compares to the Grandeur.

Are you lonesome? Have you heard how Ryan is doing?

It is very cold here. Joe and I both wish we were cruising with you....guess will have to wait till April.

Hi FC! I’m still looking for those perks but I did get the luggage…with ALMOST everything I packed in it!! L

Dayton Girl I’m with you! Let’s face it, ‘in the event of a real emergency’ there’ll be so much pushing and shoving that only the most athletic of us (or those with canes they can flail about as weapons) will make it on the lifeboats anyway!!!J

Charlie, the story will continue!

Hey Kay! You made me tired just talking about that round trip! I’m kind of lazy, you know!

Andy, this is a beautiful ship and I plan to enjoy LOTS of it from that bar stool in the Concierge Lounge!

Hplar, I don’t know who you are but I love you!!!

Schplinky, okay, I confess, I have waited until the second morning to unpack once or twice BUT I have made sure I had the right luggage before then! My luggage is school bus yellow so kind of hard to mistake!

Lucy, they do check cabins but I have my ways!!! Never had a roll call on an X ship as Phil says (hi Phil!) but have on some others.

SS, I’m afraid I’m a problem they’ve never been able to cure!

Judy, why would I panic? There's free booze on this ship! And no snow in sight! Or cold weather for that matter. Even if I just sit on my balcony in my underwear it's better than being home!!!

Later all!

Tuggers, have you had an opportunity to see a D-1 aft cabin? If so, how does it compare with a CC aft on a Celebrity M class ship?

I am curious because we booked a D-1 aft cabin on Brilliance of the Seas for our upcoming Mediterranean Cruise.

Thank you in advance.

Gail, I was wondering if you lock your luggage? I was just wondering how it's possible for some items not to arrive inside a suitcase.

I wanted to say that I love your reviews! Hope the rest of your trip goes well.

Gail - I love how you manage to keep your cool and enjoy your cruise with all the obstacles you've encountered already.

Thanks for updating us, we are all eagerly waiting to hear all the details of your cruise.

What cabin catagory are you in if I may ask?

Hi Gail,

Sorry to hear about your luggage problem. Al and I really enjoyed the Brilliance on the Transatlantic cruise last April.

Angel is great. Tell her we said hi (I crocheted her a scarf).

Thanks for the great updates. Makes me anxious for our next cruise.
