Sneaking Beer on Board

This is JUST MY HUMBLE OPINION...but I agree with the first few posters. I believe that purchases onboard, whether it's photos or excursions or supper club or bar bill, should be anticipated as part of one's overall vacation expense. With the exception of bringing onboard those alcohol items which are permitted, ie 750ml wine bottle per guest, I think (once again, it's my humble opinion) that it's tacky and tasteless and cheap to put booze in your luggage and attempt to sneak it onboard.

I wonder if potential smugglers would consider it OK to bring cases of beer or wine or bottles of liquor in their luggage to a fine land resort such as the Southhampton Princess or the Wyndham Casa Marina or the Cabo Azul Resort & Spa. I think not.

I wouldn't bring liquor in my luggage because I would be afraid of it breaking but I would go out and buy a bottle while staying at the hotel so I could have drinks in my room.

If the cruise lines allowed people to buy in their shops(duty free)and have it delivered (so they knew how much people are getting, so they could control the amount-one reason they say they don't allow carry on liquor) I would venture a guess that 99 percent of the people trying to smuggle woulnd't bother. They just don't want to pay double or more to buy a bottle so they can have a drink with their timing, if they can have a bottle delivered at all.

Now there are rumors of them not allowing bottles of water to be brought on. If there are more and more restrictions, people will go to the hotels at the all inclusive resorts instead. I would hate to think it would be easier to be at a hotel and not enjoy the sea days because it gets too restrictive.

Let's see. I didn't cruise till 18 months ago or so, but I heard this was the way it was:

bring on liquor (carry on and checked)

bring on water, soft drinks, beer

smoking everywhere (I am glad this has changed-I know I can't pick and choose)

from what I remember others saying, they used to have liquor included in the cost

If they didn't have the policy about liquor, they could have those crew members dealing with other things on the ship. If something looks like it could be dangerous (security issues) then by all means pull them to the side.

Just my opinion

#1) Should we really start discussing tacky and tasteless things seen on a cruise? LOL :p

#2) It's not prohibited to visit a liquor store and take your purchases to a hotel room. Therefore it is not necessary to smuggle because they don't care how much you drink as long as you aren't disturbing other guests. And, isn't a cruise ship a floating hotel/resort??

Not a big liquor fan, so I was wanting some tips on how to bring beer on board. Can you just unload the cans into your checked baggage or do you have to be more discreet than that. I'm going on a Carnival Cruise if that helps. Already know about the fridge pack idea. But I was thinking of something that involved a little more bulk (2 cases) spread out over four bags.

Cut back to one case and you should be good to go.

Good point, well taken. Thank you.

In thinking about this further, I've concluded that probably the reason I just can't wrap my head around liquor or beer smuggling is this: we simply don't drink in the cabin. It's not that we don't drink...we certainly do! But we'll get up, go to breakfast, go to the pool...often having a bloody mary en route. Drinks at the pool in the afternoon. After dressing for dinner we'll go to the martini bar (or similar) for a pre-dinner martini. After dinner it's a lounge or the casino...gambling and a grand marnier lol. After that the piano bar... a glass or 2 of wine. Perhaps other people will probably spend more time in their cabin than we do. But in any case, viva la difference! That's what makes the world go round, hmmm?

Your method is hillarious. Thanks for the humor on what can be a very contentious subject.

I hope no ones liquor or beer leaks on everyone's luggage and if it does I hope all passengers are informed of the cabin number to thank for the laundry bill. If you are bring it on board, make sure you put it in baggies with a diaper so I don't smell like beer or liquor on the formal night.

I don't drink beer (yuck) but I don't want anyone's Coke or Root Beer leaking all over my clothes either. So can you all please not pack soda cans either. Thanks! It's appreciated.

Isn't it amazing how the first few people to respond to a thread about sneaking alcohol always discourage it?? And even more amazing, sail7seas is ALWAYS posting about just purchasing onboard, not sneaking on, etc.....you'll find him/her on EVERY liquor thread available.

I just don't understand why the SAME people EVERY time vehemently try to discourage people from taking liquor beer on board. What are you, the cruise police? You're not going to discourage anybody from trying to take liquor onboard. It's pointless to keep trying.

Insinuating that those who take on a bottle or two of alcohol or a case of beer can't afford to buy their own onboard is rediculous. The only reason we can't take anything on board is because the cruise has a monopoly on alcohol and are charging between $5 and $15 for every drink. Yet they allow people to bring on water and soda. It just doesn't make sense. IMHO they should allow passengers up to two bottles or two cases and then it wouldn't be a problem.

I just get tired of reading the same old crap by the same people about not bringing liquor on board. If it bothers you so much why don't you pass by the topic and reply to something else!

Agreed. People are still going to bring it on. However, I find it quite amusing, it seems like some of these people really get upset about this.

I think both sides get upset, just like they do on any issue.

There are rules but just like the law in DC about not being able to own guns, there are people that think some laws (rules) are unreasonable. I know it is a financial issue (let us buy in the gift shop) and the problem with out of control drunk passengers but there has got to be a better way than to make the majority be inconvenienced because of a few passengers.

Cruise lines, if you are reading this, what do you think about getting a panel together with some passengers and trying to work this out so you have fewer problems and some people don't feel they need to break the rules in order to have a drink in their cabin?

Why not go for the gold and get a tap and keg for your room

What is the best way to do this? I don't like canned or bottled beer, but thought it would be too difficult to smuggle a keg or two on board; perhaps not? How much do you have to tip the steward to tap the keg for you and will they bring you beer mugs, not just regular glasses but traditional English Ale style mugs (preferably chilled)?

Well said; I agree that people should not smuggle. It is wrong. Just buy the booze on board.

Thanks for answering. Guess I will just stick with the fridge pack Idea and only bring 10 cans on board with me. That will still save me $80.

I don't think so. Better put it in your checked bag. Carnival has restrictions on the size of the container you can bring....here, from their website:

"Carnival Cruise Lines does not allow guests to bring large coolers on board its vessels. Small, personal-sized coolers no larger than 12” x 12” x 12” for the purpose of housing small quantities of non-alcoholic beverages and/or medications are permitted as carry-on luggage. Screening and movement of large coolers through embarkation is an impediment to the boarding and security screening process and therefore large coolers are not permitted as carry-on or checked luggage."

  • 9 years later...

Anyone tried sneaking beer lately, specially aluminum cans, bottles?I I'm about to go on a cruise and I was wondering how it has been lately since this threat is a bit almost 10 years old.

Redhawk94, how was your experience, any issues?

Very few people are going to admit they sneak on alcohol. It's like a Cruise Critic Cardinal Sin.

Lol I posted in this thread in 2008 before our first cruise. 24 cruises later bringing on beer is harder and harder while booze is fairly simple. I use to take a 12 pack of cokes and carefully open it up. Remove contents and fill with beer. Carefully glue gun the box shut. I was dumb back then lol. These days I don't smuggle anything. It's too much effort. I will say 6.50 for a single beer is stupid expensive. These days they'll scan luggage and find it. I wouldn't bother.

I suppose the idea of smuggling liquor or beer is permanently embedded in the limited intellects of those who cannot understand that the reason they can afford to cruise at all is because the lines have held down "list price" by making up revenue on things which used to be either included or reasonably priced.

What I cannot understand is why people are so willing to disclose their cheesiness: they like a cheap deal, and then try to cheat so they can afford the cheap deal, and then boast about how they can cheat.

Go for it and post your experience on CC when you return. Speaking of returning, congratulations on resurrecting a nine year old thread.;)

Thanks davekathy, Paul and TMWtim for your replies. As for the other person, please stop judging people. You don't know me.

If you don't have positive to say please keep it to yourself and move on to some other thread.

Thanks!

If you only want input from people who agree with your approach, perhaps you should not post on public threads. I think I know enough about your approach to cruising to comment on it.

I do agree some of these posts would be better not to be posted. I do also see CruiseKS has asked a question with you jumping in and not being helpful what-so-ever. If you can’t be of help, why do you need to berate someone? CruiseKS did not ask your opinion, just asked a very specific question that you, evidently, can’t answer.

Your high moral ground is worthless in this case.

That poster hasn't been active on these boards for many years.

In the intervening years since this thread was started, the alcohol policies, indeed, the policies on bringing most beverages on board, have tightened considerably.

And security scrutiny has increased since then even more. All bags are examined. Carryon bags may be visibly searched as well as scanned. Checked bags are scanned. If there's any question about the contents, expect to be summoned to the naughty room where the bags will be opened. The likelihood of success is slim.

Should you decide to risk it anyway, please be good enough to report back with your results.
