I live in Copenhagen - can give advice

Recommended Posts

Hi! We're group of 6 adults-cruisin June 15th but when we return from the cruise we're staying in CPH for 3 additional days. Need transportation from the airport to the pier on the 15th and then when we return from the cruise we'd like to go to NORDRUP near Ringsted-one of our group-her grandparents were from there and she'd like to go there. So we need to know the best way to get there??? We don't want to drive ourselves but would consider hiring a driver/ bus or public transportation. Any suggestions.

I think we'll take the metro train to the airport from the hotel but don't really know what to do when we fly in. Will there be public transportation-buses available from the airport to the pier. We'll be sailing Emerald Princess 6/15/09 to 6/25/09. Also, any place to leave our luggage until we board the ship so we can explore CPH prior to sailing? Thanks in advance for your information and opinion. Can't wait to explore this part of the country. We've been the Sweden, Norway several times but our first time CPH. Barb

For the trip to Nordrup you need to take the intercitytrain heading for Aalborg/Lindholm, Struer and Aarhus.

It goes at every hour from the central station at XX:00.

When you get off in Ringsted you got 8 minutes to get to the bus with number 251 that will take you to Nordrup.

The bus schedule look like this Ringsted - Nordrup- Ørslev - Nordrup - Ringsted and the destination sign on the front will look like this:

Ringsted st.

evt. Bragesvej Slagteriet

Total travel time is 54-55 minutes

The ticket is valid for the whole trip and cost 74 kroner oneway (114 kroner for the first class ticket)

If you take the trip on saturday 27/sunday 28 the bus only goes every 3th hour, but you can also take the Taxi from Ringsted to Nordrup.

Airport to cruiseships.

Bus number 26 goes out to the freeport terminal from both København H (Central station) and Østerport station, the airport train stops at both stations.

I can see that your ship departs on a Monday but if others are reading this, there are no busses to the freeport terminal in the weekends.

You can also change at København H, Nørreport or Østerport to the S-train that will get you to Nordhavn Station, from there you can walk to the Freeport terminal where you ship is docked.

But it is a 15 minute walk.

All s-trains (- the Ringline) goes to Nordhavn station but you need the ones heading north so the destination signs have to be Farum, Buddinge, Hillerød, Holte or Klampenborg.

A single ticket 3 Zone ticket cost 31,5 kroner and ticket price is the same both with the Bus or the S-train.

So for 6 adults it will be 189 kroner (31,5 x 6 = 189).

But a 2 Zone stamping card with 10 stamps cost 130 kroner so if you stamp it 9 times you have the needed 18 zone´s and you also got one stamp left that you can use when you get back to Copenhagen. :-)

But it is only valid for 1 hour.

You can use the luggage storage at the central station if you want to tour the city before boarding the ship.

Danish King,

It is very nice of you to offer all this help to those of us who need it. Thanks!! I need to ask about taking a train or a bus from Copenhagen to the airport. We will be on the Emerald Princess and will port at 5:00 a.m. Would we need to take a taxi to the train station or the bus station, or is either of them a walkable distance from the port? Thanks, again, for any help you can give me.:)

Also, about how long will it take to get to the airport. I'm assuming it would be faster taking the train.

Hello! We are American "ex-pats" who are currently living in Copenhagen.

LOTS of great ships come through here - and I'm more than happy to give advice on "what to see and do".

We have two children, ages 4 and 6 (currently) - so are very well versed in "what do to with kids".

The great thing about CPH is that it is a VERY (and I mean VERY) clean, safe, and EASY city to explore.

This is a "not to miss" city on your plans --

Enjoy!

Thanks for helping all of us who need it. :)

My wife and I will be in Copenhagen in August for three or four days and want to see as much as possible. We are staying at the Copenhagen Island Hotel. What do you suggest we "must see". I am a professional photographer who loves to take interesting photos of our travels. Thanks, Lamar Bates

If you look at my post to ciroon about travel from the Airport to the Freeport terminal, You just make it the opposite way.

You gonna use line number 26 and the first bus goes at 06:11.

If you take the bus you have 2 options.

1, Take the bus to Østerport train station and get on the airport train.

5 minutes with bus and 20 minutes with the airport train + waiting time at Østerport. st.

2, Take the bus to Kongen Nytorv and get the metro line M2 to the airport, the sign on the train will say Lufthavnen.

the travel time here is 30 minutes.

If you take a taxi you will have a travel time of around 20-25 minutes depending on traffic but you are in the middle of the rush hour.

@ CruisinBates

There are tonnes of info on this thread and on the old Wonderful Copenhagen thread just look through it all and ask if you got any specific questions.

Thanks CRUSING EUROPE and Danish Viking for answering all our questions. I assume that if your ship leaves on the weekend the only transportation from the hotel to the pier would be by taxi or by foot. Is this correct? Also if this has not already been answered what time does it get daylight and then dark in early august?

Hi,

We're going to be on a Disney Cruise that stops in Copenhagen on July 9, 2010. Our group will be 4 adults and my 7 year old daughter. We will only be in port from 9:30 am to 5 pm. Do you think seeing these is doable:

Tivoli

Rosenburg Castle

Amalienborg Palace and the changing of the guards

We are thinking about doing a Hop-On Hop-Off Bus. Is there anything that could or should be added to what we want to do?

Thanks so much for posting all this information.

yes you need to walk to Nordhavn station or take a taxi

One of the piers is sundkaj that is marked on this map and nordhavn station is the big red S on the railwayline.

But if you ship are docked at langelinie you can take the bus, it is only the freeport terminal where the bus dont goes in the weekend.

I cant remember when the sun goes up and down in August but it starts to get brighter around 6-7:00 and it gets darker around 20:00.

The changing of the guards is at 12:00 so if i was you i would start at Rosenborg castle.

You can do the Rosenborg Castle quickly if you reach it when it opens at 10:00 and then walk to Amalienborg, but you need to walk from rosenborg at 11:30 at the latest to be in good time.

The guards start to walk from the barracks at gothersgade behind Rosenborg and to Amalienborg at 11:30.

The four adults can pay for just the Rosenborg ticket (70 kroner) but if you want to see the museum at Amalienborg as well you can buy the combined Rosenborg-Amalienborg ticket for 90 kroner.

The entrance for the child is free.

You can walk from the pier to rosenborg castle but it is a healthy walk :)

http://www.krak.dk/query?&what=route&mapstate=7;12.590117574060824;55.69590205003599;s;12.573456604591673;55.70125943394528;12.606778543529978;55.690544666126705;618;375&mapcomp=;;;;;;;;;;;;;;0;0;;;;0&acount=2&m_width=618&m_height=375&addr1=|Langeliniekaj%202100%20Ny%20Dahlerup%20Torv|2100|12.600757380278296|55.69977004619682|6|maps_place_dk;81687;22|1|||&addr2=|Rosenborg%20Slot%20-%20De%20Danske%20Kongers%20Kronologiske%20Sa%201307|1307|12.579622163302028|55.68566976493004|6|maps_place_dk;24401;21||||&fromSearch=Langeliniekaj%202100%20Ny%20Dahlerup%20Torv&toSearch=Rosenborg%20Slot%20-%20De%20Danske%20Kongers%20Kronologiske%20Sa%201307&calculationMode=fastest

Or you can take the bus number 26 from the Langelinie pier to Østerport train station and change to any train heading for the Central station (København H) and get of at Nørreport station and take the short walk to Rosenborg

Amalienborg is a short walk from Rosenborg, you just walk out of the park to Dronningens tværgade (the queens crossing street) and walk 500 meters and turn left on bredgade and walk 200 meters and the amalienborg is on your right hand and the marble church on your left.

http://www.krak.dk/query?&what=route&mapstate=7;12.583809051640466;55.684301528077754;s;12.567148082171312;55.68965891198704;12.60047002110962;55.67894414416847;618;375&mapcomp=;;;;;;;;;;;;;;0;0;;;;0&acount=2&m_width=618&m_height=375&addr1=|Dronningens%20Tværgade%2058%20%201302|1302|12.582705505840241|55.68483340086068|7|maps_address_dk;606595;11||||&addr2=|Amalienborg%201256|1256|12.592615711218135|55.68363528463582|6|maps_place_dk;6956;21||||&fromSearch=Dronningens%20Tværgade%2058%20%201302&toSearch=Amalienborg%201256&calculationMode=fastest

After Amalienborg you can walk to Tivoli through the pedestrian street strøget or take bus number 26 (yes the cruise ship bus) to the Central station/tivoli, the direction of the bus is Ålholm plads.

After tivoli you can take one of many taxis from the central station or take bus number 26 back to the cruiseship.

16:17 from the central station will get you to Langelinie pier at 16:47 and thats maybe a little bit close to the departing time but 15:57 will get you to Langelinie pier 16:27.

If you want to know it, there are 3 types of guards and i just translated a text about the different types of guards on google language tool so its not 100% correctly translated

The Royal guards tasks is to stand guard on its Regent by the royal castles and palaces, and to train and develop army units.

Changing the Guard at Amalienborg conducted daily at normal. 12. Moreover, the post replacing every two hours. Garden is on the line in two hours at a time and staying after four hours of guard room until they are on line again. Guard Parade departs from Rosenborg Barracks in Gothersgade at. 11:30. There are three different types of guards:

Kings Guard

Created when HM the Queen staying at Amalienborg. This watch is characterized in that tab and drum today hours will be / tab for aid by "kolonnaden". Marching through the city with music. The route passes through Livgardens barracks - Rosenborg Street - Købmagergade - Ostergade - Kongens Nytorv - Bredgade - Sct. Annæ Square - Amaliegade - Amalienborg.

Lieutenant Guard

Created when HRH Prince live at Amalienborg, when HRH Crown live at Amalienborg and regent or when HRH Prince Joachim lives at Amalienborg and regency. This watch is characterized to drum stands beside the tab aid by kolonnaden. Marching through the city with music. The route passes through Livgardens barracks - Rosenborg Street - Købmagergade - Ostergade - Kongens Nytorv - Bredgade - Sct. Annæ Square - Amaliegade - Amalienborg.

Palace Guard

The route passes through Livgardens barracks - Gothersgade - Chr. IX's Street - Kr Bernikowsgade - Kongens Nytorv - Bredgade - Frederiksgade - Amalienborg.

We will be spending 1 day in Copenhagen and fly out first thing in the morning for a 9am flight.

Is it easier to check into a hotel by the airport then tour the city? Or is it best to stay in town and get the airport in the morning?

Thank you,

Thank you :)

@ hulamoon

If i was you i would recommend the Hilton at the airport.

You can get to the Kongens Nytorv/Nyhavn area in 12-13 minutes by metroline M2 or to the Central Station/Tivoli area in 13 minutes with the Airport Train.

Other hotels in the area but not at the airport are

Quality Hotel Airport Dan: close to Kastrup metro station (m2)

Zleep Airport Hotel: close to Tårnby train station (the airport train)

Park Inn Copenhagen Airport: close to Amager Strand metro station (M2) and the beach park.

Hi Danish viking,

We've been following your thread for a while, and I can't thank you enough for all your sharing of the wonderful local knowledge.

A quick couple of questions, that may or may not have been addressed previously:

We're coming into Copenhagen, June 15th, for two nights prior to sailing on the Azamara, Journey. We have tentatively reserved a junior suite at "The Square."

Can you offer a "locals" point of view (opinion) of this hotel and its surroundings, accessibility to area attractions? Any good restaurants the "locals" might frequent in the area? My wife and I, have the philosophy and like to experience new places as travelers not tourist.

Also, we're coming in on a Delta flight. What is the best or easiest way to get to the hotel from the airport? Cab or Train? We'd appreciate directions on how to get there and how much we should expect to pay?

Thanks again for all your work here on this forum! :)

The cheapest way is to travel with the airport train (not the Metro) to the central station and walk to the hotel from there.

The price is 31,50 Kr. oneway.

For dinner i will suggest either the many restaurants in Tivoli or Gråbrødretorv.

Tivoli is just around the corner from the hotel but is very touristic but the gråbrødre torv is just a short walk down the strøget shopping street.

Just before you get to Helligåndskirken (Trinity Church) you will turn left at Klosterstræde and you are there.

Hi,

I enjoy reading all your tips. Thank you. How much is the Copenhagen card? Is it the same as day pass? I was told to eat hot dog and pancake (Galette). Where should I go for pancake or is that really in Netherland? They are suppose to have all kinds of fillings. I remember the hot dog I once had in Tivoli Garden long time ago. They put in cooked onion which is very sweet. I am looking forward to eat hot dog again in CPH. This time I have 24 hrs precruise and hardly anytime postcruise. I am staying near CPH central station so that I can make full use of my precruise time.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our question.

Angela.

I would recommend to come into town at least one or 2 days day before the cruise because if you luggage get lost you can still get it at the airport.

And off course you will have more days to see Copenhagen because one day isn´t enough to see all the castles and museums, do the canal tour and other fun stuff.

@ amri638

You are thinking of two cards here

1) The 24 hour transportation card that covers the greater copenhagen area. (Bus, Water bus, Metro, S-Train, Øresund/Airport train and regional trains)

The price is 120 kr for adults and 60 for Childrens.

2 children under 10 years is for free with one adult.

2) The 24 or 72 hour Copenhagen card that covers transportation and free or reduced entrance to most places in the greater Copenhagen area.

The price is

Adult:

24-hours card: 199 kr.

72-hours card: 429 kr.

Children: (0-15 years)

24-hours card: 129 kr.

72-hours card: 249 kr

2 children under 10 years is for free with one adult.

The taxi driver who took us from the Hilton (at the airport) to the cruise dock didn't charge us extra for our luggage. We just paid the metered rate. It was very reasonable as I recall, but I can't remember the exact amount.

Hi Danish Viking,

The information you have given is most helpful, but I have another question. It is my understanding that the Copenhagen card is specific to each person as their name is written on it, but the transportation card can be used by anyone until the number of trips is used up. So my wife and I could use the same transportation card, but would need separate Copenhagen cards. Is this correct or have I gotten something confused here?
