sunshinesusie Posted June 29, 2008 #1 Share Posted June 29, 2008 My sister read somewhere that you should take your own toilet paper with you when you leave the ship, because a lot of places do not have tp. Have any of you experienced this? We are traveling to eastern caribbean. I told her she is nuts and I would post this and let her know. Thanks:D

Thanks:D Not a bad idea - however, I don't think a "roll" is necessary. I generally have a pocket pack of kleenex in my purse for "every occasion" just in case. I've seen some pretty "bad" locations and frankly whether they had tp or not - I found it was better to wait until I got back to the ship.
14Terry Posted June 29, 2008 #4 Share Posted June 29, 2008 It might be a good idea to take some with you when you leave the ship on an excursion. Better to have and not be worried than not have it when needed! :D
IDKaren Posted June 29, 2008 #5 Share Posted June 29, 2008 We have found that many of other countrys do not have tp or enough tp for visitors.. Especially in Africa and Egypt- where ya gotta pay for your squares! I imagine even in the Caribbean there may be places to have your own--even for a toilet "cover" which you usually do not find except in the US. BYOP!! Bring your own paper! Spikesgirl Posted June 29, 2008 #6 Share Posted June 29, 2008 We got into the habit of carrying TP when we traveled through SE Asia. As other folks siad, it's better to have it and not need it. Strangely enough, they didn't have TP, but they used TP as paper towels for your hands (in the few bathrooms that actually provided anything at all). Worse comes to worse, carry a small package of tissue with you and some soap leaves.

bplazo Posted June 29, 2008 #8 Share Posted June 29, 2008 I have found at Target travel size toilet paper (charmin). I always keep some handy for emergencies.
bobnatt Posted June 29, 2008 #9 Share Posted June 29, 2008 My wife always carries a small package of tissue paper for just such emergencies. We always have a small plastic bottle of Purell to keep our hands as clean off the ship as they are on the ship.
Plant Posted June 30, 2008 #10 Share Posted June 30, 2008 I have found at Target travel size toilet paper (charmin). I always keep some handy for emergencies. I take the same thing. You'll find it in the travel size section of any of the discount stores. It's very small and very nice to have. (I've been there, and done without  once!) JanineM Posted June 30, 2008 #11 Share Posted June 30, 2008 I carry tissues with me ALL the time, and find I have needed them in the States, but never when traveling. Guess I must be unlucky, but it seems like half of the public restrooms in this country are out of paper.
Cruisenouvelle Posted June 30, 2008 #12 Share Posted June 30, 2008 Check the trial size area at WalMart as well. Ours has both the travel size Charmin toilet paper and the Purell sanitizer. Good luck! Kinda makes you realize how fortunate we are here in the States ! :)
Cruzman Posted June 30, 2008 #13 Share Posted June 30, 2008 Why don't you carry a Sears Roebuck catalog; tear out a page and use it when you have to, lol. Seriously, I have been all over the Caribbean and never experienced a toilet paper problem about which some have expressed concerns! If however, you decide to take a roll with you, I sincerely hope that I get a chance to capture the image with my camera.
arlodog Posted June 30, 2008 #14 Share Posted June 30, 2008 We did not have a problem with TP in the Eastern ports, however Mexico is a problem. The sewage system there can not handle TP so there will be a wastebasket next to the toilet to throw away the TP--they don't want you to flush it! cb at sea Posted June 30, 2008 #15 Share Posted June 30, 2008 We've never been anywhere that hasn't had tp--but then, it's rare that we have to go very often onshore!!!! Just take a few tissues--that'll do the job!
doctordi Posted June 30, 2008 #16 Share Posted June 30, 2008 I had a little bit of trouble at Tulum. The attendant gave me some TP when I walked in the door. I went and used it all since it was only a few squares. After I had washed my hands, I can't find any towels. The attendant wouldn't give any towels or more TP. I guess that that was their way of rationing or they were looking for a tip. I just wiped my hands on my jeans and left.

The only place I have enconutered no TP was in St. Martin (on the French side) but there was a woman handing out A paper towel after you washed your hands. tomko2 Posted June 30, 2008 #21 Share Posted June 30, 2008 We also carry Purell and few sheets for all ports. In Europe it is a must and sometimes in the Caribbean the toilet rolls are empty because so many people are using the facilities when the ships are in port. Your sister is not crazy.:D Kathy:)
PurpleCow Posted June 30, 2008 #22 Share Posted June 30, 2008 I carry one or two of these when we're out of the country. I've had to use one only once, but I was very happy I had it that time! Usually we look for a McDonalds. They're everywhere and they have the same kind of restrooms they have at home.
happy cruzer Posted June 30, 2008 #23 Share Posted June 30, 2008 Yep, I always have a few tissues in my pocket. With 3000 people per ship and sometimes 6 ships in port, the restrooms on shore can run out of paper. And while we are talking about TP. Remember that the TP on the ship is designed to be flushable in the ships vacuum system. It's not Charmin. Any thick items will clog the ships system. cruiser2101 Posted June 30, 2008 #24 Share Posted June 30, 2008 This is the very reason I love reading threads/posts on this site. I learn something new everyday. I never had a problem with TP onshore, but now you've got me thinkin'.
Swells1 Posted July 1, 2008 #25 Share Posted July 1, 2008  Don't forget the toilet seat covers. I bought a package of 7 at Walgreen's for 99 cents and I keep them in my purse.
