Hi,

DH and I want to make the most of our day in Provence. We're not taking Oceania's excursion. We want to go to Aix-en-Provence. What are some other sites relatively nearby worth visiting, including a good winery? Also, can anyone suggest a car service that can give us a countryside tour? Or can we get by on the train?

Thanks, in advance, for your guidance :)

As far as a guide is concerned, we've had great good luck with Alain at Dream Tours:

We're going to be in Provence next month, and we'll be going (again) to St. Paul Vence.......it's perfection.

Alain was even able to get us lunch reservations at Colombe d'Or

http://www.la-colombe-dor.com/ ......you feel less guilty enjoying a fabulous meal when you can tell yourself that you're there to see the Picasso's Chagalls' and Matisse's.

And the 12th Century church is right out of Chaucer

Contact Catherine at www.provence-travel.com. We did a tour with her last year and are doing another in the fall. Last year she took us to Aix-en-Provence and the delightful fishing village of Cassis. We bought sandwiches and a bottle of wine and the 5 of us(4 travellers and Catherine) had a picnic overlooking Cassis. She is from Aix and knows the area very well.

Remember there is a difference between the Cote d'azur which is where St Paul de Vence, Nice, Eze, Villefranche are located. These are much closer to Monaco than Provence which is further inland and further East. Provence is more accessible from Marseille as a port than Monte Carlo. So if you are really planning to visit Provence (Aix, Avignon, St Remy etc.) be sure you allow plenty of time to get back to the ship. Luckily, Oceania usually stays until late in the evening.

StanandJim,

I contacted Dream Tours about going to St. Paul de Vence. From Which port did you connect with the driver -- Monte Carlo or Marseilles... because it's too far from Marseilles. Merci!
