Traveler353 Posted July 27, 2009 #2 Share Posted July 27, 2009 Pre-payed budget of money, maybe.
Bases5 Posted July 27, 2009 #3 Share Posted July 27, 2009 It is just a easer way for some people to save and have OBC and a smaller bill at the end of the cruise. A lot of people will spend extra money if it's within reach. To answer your question, there is no real advantage.
Name Of The Game Posted July 27, 2009 #4 Share Posted July 27, 2009 That's what banks are for. :D If you have the discipline to send money in to Carnival, why not put it in the bank and pay the bill when you return home?
oceanseagle12 Posted July 27, 2009 #5 Share Posted July 27, 2009 its also a simple way to have your needed cash on board waiting for you, so to speak.
mom2tcdx2 Posted July 27, 2009 #6 Share Posted July 27, 2009 Personally I like to occasionally purchase funship dollars or OBC so that can budget what I am spending and I buy them when I have an extra bit of money. This way I know roughly how much I have to spend, I don't worry about whether I can cover the expense once onboard. I also do not have a credit card so I prepay everything before we sail and have no expense to pay when we are done. I like it really to budget and that way I know I have it, then I know I haven't spent the money elsewhere. I have also purchased them as gifts. Earthworm Jim Posted July 27, 2009 #7 Share Posted July 27, 2009 That's what banks are for. :D If you have the discipline to send money in to Carnival, why not put it in the bank and pay the bill when you return home? Because you only need to have discipline for a moment to send the money to Carnival. You'd have to have discipline over the long term to not take the money you saved out of the bank and spend it on something.

Rare chasinraynbowz Posted July 27, 2009 #10 Share Posted July 27, 2009 I do have the discipline and I'm younger than most of you here. :D Kudos to you then. I have not bought any, but did think about it. For me, I like having everything paid for up front and no bills when its over. I put away so much money each week. Our cruise is bought and paid for. Our hotels before and after are paid for. Our round trip train ride is paid for. Our excursions are paid for. All I need is spending money and if I decided to buy myself some funship dollars, then I would have that paid for too. Everyone is different. Just because you do things one way doesn't mean anyone else can or will. You are younger which means you have a monthly income probably higher than some folks who are older and have retired. Everyone does whats best and easiest for them.

There's no benefit to them, aside from giving CCL an interest-free loan (as a shareholder, I thank you! ;) ). I'd advise taking what you would spend on Funship Dollars and putting into a high yield savings account instead. Earn interest while you wait. :)
bazarr2 Posted July 27, 2009 #13 Share Posted July 27, 2009 That one always boggled my brain........makes no sense to me either;) Might not make sense to you but like the previous poster noted we like to pay for everything up front and have everything paid for a head of time, to put things on the credit card just doesn't always make sense to some. If it doesn't make sense to you don't do it. But let us do what we feel is right for us. OK?:p

gtalum Posted July 27, 2009 #15 Share Posted July 27, 2009 I lost enough money in them high yield accounts. How exactly do you lose money in an FDIC-insured savings account? indeed. ;) Further, if the FDIC fails, your money won't be any better off in Carnival's hands than it is in the bank's. yst347 Posted July 27, 2009 #18 Share Posted July 27, 2009 Funship dollars work like the old Christmas Club accounts back when banks were community institutions. Basically they help people who find saving/budgeting difficult, squirrel away money for a given purpose. I have never understood why some people with credit cards prefer to pay cash. When we travel we use plastic for our on board account. When we get the bill we pay it....in full. To each his own.

But we like to stay debt free in the time with everything going haywire with banks and credit card companys. I am doing it this way to surprise my husband when it comes time to pay the bill that there is none. That is why I am doing it. Simple.

I like to spend a few hours each sea day in the casino. I bring gambling money in cash. If I lose the cash set aside for this purpose then I'm done in the casino, so we all have ways we budget. What works best for each of us is just fine with me. I'm sure your hubby will have a big smile for you when the surprise is revealed. ;) Have a great trip. :)

We put all charges on our AMEX, and pay it off in full when the bill arrives. Although we don't earn a lot of interest on our vacation account, some is better than none :D. lynnde Posted July 27, 2009 #23 Share Posted July 27, 2009 I use fun ship dollars to add a little each month before a cruise, why you ask, I don't do credit cards, cash is king. pay as you go. I will be putting in a new kitchen this year and I will be paying cash, would of had last year, but we prefered a cruise instead. It might happen this year, if it does it does. I would rather spend my money on a big boat than house remodels.

I'd advise taking what you would spend on Funship Dollars and putting into a high yield savings account instead. This is more interest then a couple of funshp dollars I would purchanse in advance. I book early so I get the cabin I want, so the early deposit is my choice. I purchase funship dollars because I, like others who have posted do not want a bill at the end, and also since I perfer to pay cash I do not have to carry as much with me when I travel. I also only purchase the funship dollars with my debit card a week before I travel. That way they are put on my account and I do not have to wait in line at the pursers desk to apply them when I board.
scissorhappygrl Posted July 27, 2009 #25 Share Posted July 27, 2009 I have done funship dollars on the last 2 cruises, not that it is saving any money in any way, I just think it's fun to get on board with a nice account set up for us! :) Hopefully there is enough left on this one to book another cruise while we are on! Carnival is just our little savings account for 5 months...nothing wrong with that!!!!
