Gerbz Posted August 13, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 13, 2009 Hi! I'm considering purchasing 100 shares on CCL to get the shareholder onboard credit. Before I purchase, I have a few questions for those of you who are shareholders and who have received and used these credits. 1. Can it be used towards gratutities? 2. Can it be used to purchase alcohol &/or tabacco? 3. Do you receive the credits if you book last minute and get a deal on the cruise fare? I have read on one of the previous posts that they can be used for gratuities, but here's what the CCL shareholder benefit reads: This benefit is available to shareholders holding a minimum of 100 shares of Carnival Corporation or Carnival plc. Employees, travel agents cruising at travel agent rates, tour conductors or anyone cruising on a reduced-rate or complimentary basis are excluded from this offer. This benefit is not transferable and cannot be used for casino credits/charges and gratuities charged to your onboard account. I'm confused as people say it can be used towards gratuities, but the shareholder benefit says it can't. HELP! Your response is greatly appreciated. :)

Gerbz Posted August 13, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted August 13, 2009 Yes on all questions.. We use the credit for everything.. Thanx for the quick response. I wonder why CCL would write that it can not be used?? Odd...maybe they just want to cover their "bottoms" so they can alter and adjust any time they want. ggprincess2004 Posted August 13, 2009 #4 Share Posted August 13, 2009 I don' t know why they print the limitations, once an onboard credit is in your account it is applied to your bill.....for whatever charges appear there. We love our little "yield enhancement program" whenever we sail!
Minoushka Posted August 13, 2009 #5 Share Posted August 13, 2009 Since I bought mine I get OBC on EVERY sister company .With FCC added on ..I always buy FCC on Princess it adds up especially for longer cruises I am looking forward to our OBC ...I used it for everything ...they automatically subtracted every day expenses It went VERY quickly

Because there is a huge void in policy between Corporate/Fleet. ;)
Genia11 Posted August 13, 2009 #7 Share Posted August 13, 2009 Is there a minimum period for which I have to hold the shares before getting credit for OBC? In another words, if I were to buy the shares today, can I then request the OBC tomorrow... subsequently sell it the day after?

paul929207 Posted August 13, 2009 #9 Share Posted August 13, 2009 Yes, you can sell it immediately, but the cost the trades plus price fluctuation could wipe out the OBC.
-Lew- Posted August 13, 2009 #10 Share Posted August 13, 2009 Does the Shareholder Benefit OBC appear anywhere in your Cruise Personalizer? We recently purchased 100 shares of CCL and faxed the required info. How do we know the OBC has been actually credited to our account prior to embarkation? booklady26 Posted August 13, 2009 #13 Share Posted August 13, 2009 Just a word of caution. If you want to buy the stock because you think Carnival is good investment, then the Shareholder Benefit is a nice little perk. But don't spend $3,000+ to purchase 100 shares just to get a max of $250 OBC. It could even be $50 or $100 depending on the length of your cruise. It would take you a lot of cruises to make the cost of the stock "pay for itself". Also keep in mind that the benefit may be reduced or not given at all if you're already receiving any promotional OBC's from the cruise line, including, I believe, future cruise credits. Over a year ago they started allowing both FCC and stockholder's credit.
LARGIN Posted August 13, 2009 #15 Share Posted August 13, 2009 I bought at $18 and have used the credit numerous times.. I have received close to my original purchase price in credits, a stock dividend and now the stock is going for around $30.. Nice investment.. :D:D

RCCL has that kind of restrictions on the credits, but Carnival does not.

CCL quoted just now at $30.34. So, a $250 OBC on 100 shares purchased today is an 8.25% dividend. Take two cruises per year, say a 14 and a 7 day voyage and your combined OBC "dividend" is 11.54%. Try to find corporations shelling out those kinds of returns and let me know. Sure, you're not going to return your purchase price anytime soon, but think of it as an investment and it sort of makes sense. Just be ready to sell. I am on the Tahitian right now. We got both the FCC OBC and the shareholder OBC. $550 per cruise sure comes in handy.

Your 14 day cruise is worth $250; your 7 day only $100. I wouldn't be surprised if CCL hits 40 again in the very near future.
