Wendy, yes, we ate lunch in CR our first day and I think one other day. Had breakfast in there 2 or 3 times. I recommend it highly. At breakfast, I ordered Eggs Benedict, which isn't on the menu, but if you order it, they will bring it to you without batting an eyelash. (At least that was my experience,)

 

The service in CR isn't as good at breakfast or lunch as it is at dinner -- they seem to have the whole dining room open for those meals (which is fine, especially if you want to sit in a particular area), but the staff is quite reduced since it has less traffic. As a result, the patrons are usually seated so far from each other it's hard for the smaller staff attend to each party properly. No big deal to me as I never ate there when I was in a rush, but if others are thinking of going to CR for breakfast or lunch, I would think they would want to be aware of this. And if you're picky about your service, you might want to sit near other parties, as I'd assume your service would be more attentive, due to it being easier for the servers to deal with little clusters of occupied tables.

TC:We'll be back on the Voyager in November with the new chef (new to the Voyager, not Regent)

 

If you're talking about Mike - he's been with Regent since at least 2002 and has been the chef on the WC for all or part of the trip several times as well. FWIW, he and Cornell are on a par. Both very good - and nice men as well.

TC, one thing I forgot to ask--were the ballroom dancers on board, and if so, did they offer lessons?

 

 

The ballroom dancers were on board. They were Olena and Sasha and are "International Dance Champions" as per "Passages". They starred in "Ballroom Bravo" and were also featured in all of the other shows. They taught 4 dance classes and were accompanying many of the tours. They were very personable and excellent dancers.

Oops -- sorry -- didn't realize they were dance champions.. . . or that they taught 4 dance classes. Guess we were spending too much time in our Le Cordon Bleu class (and didn't watch the shows as friends were telling us that they were mediocre). We did enjoy the one class that we took and were aware that they did a Rhumba class. It will be interesting to see if they are on our November cruise that spotlights dance.

 

I'm curious to know what their role was on the tours as we did not take Regent tours. . . .

Just as an aside. . . . .there were two ballroom dancers, whose names I am ashamed to admit I do not remember, who were also "Ballroom Champions" and we happened to dine with them one evening. They were delightful! He is an American and she is Russion; husband and wife. She accompanied several excussions that we were on (B2B Med on Navigator) and she was bright and funny and pleasant and a delight. I have no idea how they performed as dancers because we didn't see one of their shows, but everytime we saw them on board they were "Hello! How ARE you!" and that is always nice.

That's a policy that I've always thought was great, when done. I'm not sure how official it is, but at least allows someone "official" to be there if something goes wrong, and to report back on the quality of the tour, or lack thereof. Sometimes in the Caribbean this has not been done, and I felt let down.

A Regent staff member (from the casino, entertainment crew, destination services,etc) accompany the tours. There was one person on each tour that we took.

 

As Wendy says,they are there to make sure everything is OK, rather than leave it to the shore based company. We had a lot of help from the Regent rep on our trips as my wife has limited mobility.

Another CC member, Caroldoll, will be disembarking from the Voyager tomorrow and will be doing a different report on her experiences during our cruise as well as the one she is was on this week. I'm looking forward to this as I am aware of some food issues they had as well as some lack of communication this week.

Thanks for the review, Jackie. As I did when reading it, I thought that your comments reflected a "mixed bag", and your ratings seem higher than the comments. I guess your summary says it all in that they met your expectations and you are looking forward to returning.

 

My only issue with Regent really other than heaving my own bag on the bed has been the service is not "6 star", so it sounds like that has improved. That is great to know, and I hope it lasts. It has never been enough to make me not want to sail every single week, but it was something that has had room for improvement. I am happy to see a step up.

 

We are doing that Gilbraltar tour on our holiday cruise on Silver Spirit, and we are also staying on the main drag of Las Ramblas. Some good friends just got their 10 ride bus tickets lifted this past week there and were happy they did not lose anything else. I have read so many stories, but I do want to see it, so I guess we will bring a second cheapy camera with a strap and all that so we can do things.

Debbie -- you really did understand the review and why I rated it so high! To be honest, I don't understand 6 star vs. 5 star ratings on ships and hotels. A 5 star hotel in one country may only be a 4 star in another.

 

Think you'll enjoy both Gilbraltar and Barcelona. We had our video recorder and camera -- just held it tight in front of us. There was no way they could get to the money in my pocket without removing the pin. It is really easy to get distracted -- there is so much to see. After going to Barcelona, I ordered a "Leg Stash" from Magellan with plans to use it in Rio. It looks like an easy way to hold a few things in a safe place.

Thanks Cruisewoman. Great review! Too bad about the soap dishes in the shower stalls. I complained about these last time on board, too bad they did not fix them in the refit. A small thing, but.

 

I'm surprised about the hair dryers. I've always found them more than adequate. I really don't want to cart my own along!

A very good, comprehensive review, Cruisewoman. I agree with you about the tiny curved soap dish, but I never thought to mention it myself. Well spotted.. Earlier in the year on Voyager, I was struck how friendly and full of smiles all the staff were and how helpful they were to my wife and I. Obviously this wasn't the case with you and it should have been.

Cruisewoman79, thank you so much for your very informative review. It sounds like you had some fabulous experiences.

We really did have a good time and did book onboard for the Mariner (although we might switch to another sailing - not sure yet). And again the soap dish thing was minor (as was the hair dryer) but I'm trying to be thorough and "speak" to the 6 Star rating!

As for the smiles - there were many, but with some of the staff (Reception) and some who shall remain nameless, we just didn't get that feeling we have had before where they were so glad we were onboard!
