luvs2travl Posted March 22, 2010 #3 Share Posted March 22, 2010 Sadly, the Curacao Distillery will be closed as well. We so enjoyed our tour there, and the Curacao tasting was wonderful also.
Krazy Kruizers Posted March 22, 2010 #4 Share Posted March 22, 2010 Have been there on a Sunday -- only a couple of shops were open. Most attractions were closed as well.
rkacruiser Posted March 22, 2010 #5 Share Posted March 22, 2010 Some of the larger stores will be open until around 1:00 P. M. Then, they close. Even the local market has greatly reduced activity on a Sunday. It is still an interesting port to just wander around. And, the new casino and hotel with some small stores (also closed in the afternoon, if they ever opened) near the Megapier is interesting to visit. Typhoon1 Posted March 22, 2010 #6 Share Posted March 22, 2010 Curacao seems to be a deeply religious country, thus, there is not much many things that are open. The churches are all open, be sure to stop by the Basilica. It is quite a sight to see, and the locals are very proud of it.

Even the local market has greatly reduced activity on a Sunday. It is still an interesting port to just wander around. And, the new casino and hotel with some small stores (also closed in the afternoon, if they ever opened - They do open on Sunday for a short time) near the Megapier is interesting to visit. Shops at the Renaissance Mall -- right at their hotel -- at the Mega Pier. Penha Columbian Jewelers Freeport Jewelers Swatch Del Sol Swarovski Boutique Tiffany & Co Mont Blanc Tommy Hillingers XOXO Clothing Little Switzerland Diesel Panache Guess Maxmana Sun & Specks (they even repairs regular glasses) So -- if some of you are worried about docking at the Mega Pier and can't handle the long walk through Rif Fort (which still has a lot of small shops) and pass the vendors, and over the pontoon bridge to get to town, you can walk right over to these shops by the hotel. We found great shopping there.

TMWeddle Posted March 22, 2010 #9 Share Posted March 22, 2010 What's worse than Sunday is Carnival! We were there on a Monday during Carnival. DW went to ship's doctor, he thought she might need a blood test that they couldn't do on the ship. Was planning on having her go to the hospital but because of Carnival the hospital lab was closed - would open it for "a considerable sum of money." She was not that bad off so we didn't bother to find out how considerable such a sum might be. I pity anyone who really needed the services of the lab that day! There were a few shops open and we did have a fine lunch on shore at Bistro Le Clochard in the Rif Fort near the Mega Pier.
Typhoon1 Posted March 22, 2010 #10 Share Posted March 22, 2010 What's worse than Sunday is Carnival! We were there on a Monday during Carnival. Tell me about it, we were there on Fat Tuesday. It seemed as if they considered it a national holiday.
Himself Posted March 23, 2010 #11 Share Posted March 23, 2010 I was there on a Sunday in October and the place where they give samples of the Curacao Licquor was open because I did some sampling.

gizmo Posted March 23, 2010 #13 Share Posted March 23, 2010 We were just there two weeks ago on a Sunday and almost all the shops were open as well as the Distillery. We were on a local tour and stopped there. Whiere were the shops ? When I was there on a Sunday most of the stores on the Punda side were closed. Those that were open were only open a couple of hours. I don't know what was open around the fort.
La Jollans love to cruise Posted March 23, 2010 #14 Share Posted March 23, 2010 When you cross over the floating bridge there was a huge mall type of place and everything was open. Also many of the high end shops were open that are near the ship.
LaurieCM Posted March 23, 2010 #15 Share Posted March 23, 2010 We always go to the government building- there is a tree outside it- close to the sidewalk, that has a naked woman carved into it. There must be a wood preservative on it- kind of shiny. We 1st noticed it in 1990, and my DH & I always check on it when we end up there- just a short walk from the ship. Yeah, we love culture.;)

mkl55 Posted March 24, 2010 #17 Share Posted March 24, 2010 We were there in February and enjoyed Mambo Beach. It's a short (10 minute? cab ride away and has bar/food/facilities. I forget how much the cab cost so that must mean it was reasonable!
Sir PMP Posted March 25, 2010 #18 Share Posted March 25, 2010 I have just realized that we will be in Curacao on a Sunday. Will the shops and attractions etc. be open? Shops will be open early and close early, it's s great day to sit outside on the terraces, Willemstad is always lively...
sail7seas Posted March 25, 2010 #19 Share Posted March 25, 2010 We've never docked at Mega Pier. Is it walk distance from floating bridge? Is that where this 'mall' is located? We've been to Curacao many times and alway walk across the bridge and enjoy walking/browsing/shopping that area. We've always docked in the downtown. Boytjie Posted March 25, 2010 #20 Share Posted March 25, 2010 We've never docked at Mega Pier. Is it walk distance from floating bridge? Yes, it is just a few blocks away.
sail7seas Posted March 25, 2010 #21 Share Posted March 25, 2010 If we dock in downtown, we should walk past the bridge and continue straight ahead? If one is coming back across the floating bridge, you turn left at the end of the bridge?

I never saw anything that looked like a mall.
Krazy Kruizers Posted March 25, 2010 #23 Share Posted March 25, 2010 It has been years since any HAL ship we have been on has docked anywhere but the Mega Pier.
peaches from georgia Posted March 25, 2010 #24 Share Posted March 25, 2010 We've always docked across from Punda here you have to take a walk across the floating bridge (or taxi around it into the city). Didn't know that was called the Mega Pier, but if you google 'docking in Curacao', the Mega Pier is the one HAL has docked at for the last several years. We have been there 3 times and have always had the walk across the bridge from what I now know is called the Mega Pier.
sail7seas Posted March 25, 2010 #25 Share Posted March 25, 2010 I am so confused now I don't know where is what. I have never seen a mall in the area we dock. We were just there and I can't visualize where there is a mall on the side of the city where we dock. Is it near the floating bridge? Is it across the street from where the ship docks? Is it visible from the ship or is it back away from the main street along which we walk? We've been to Curacao so many times and I have no clue.
