Last cruise was on HAL and we encountered no smoking problems. Nor did we on either of our other two HAL cruises. Next cruise is with Celebrity, and I expect the same. The only two lines that we have had smokers bother us was on RCCL and Carnival.

Niether of these cruise lines are smoker friendly. I would suggest RCCL or Carnival if you want to smoke.

I think that for the cruise brands there will be a move to attract non smokers / smokers depending on your preferred client mix.

Only makes sense.

The cruise industry is light years behind in clean air advances, but they are playing catch-up IMHO.

More choice is always better.

Choose a smoking cabin or non smoking cabin... BUT GIVE THE CUSOMER A CHOICE!

These boards are a window on what cruisers want and for some the mix of smokers / clean air people, is a biggie.

i'm happy with X's smoking policy, i just wish they'd enforce it more. on our recent century sailing, we specifically chose loungers by the pool that were away from the smoking section... but some guy ignored the rules and lit cigarette after cigarette right out in the open by the edge of the pool. thankfully we weren't near him, but the people trying to relax around him were getting lungfuls of smoke every time the wind blew. not cool.

Just came back from Summit. You can smoke in the disco(open all day) and one half of the pool area. There were a lot of smokers on our cruise. We did smoke about once or twice a day on our veranda. It's just like anything else, don't take advantage of it and no one will know.

Wow, that is terrible.

Many people choose Celebrity because of their smoke free policy on verandas. I would have been outraged if you were in a stateroom near me and rest assured your blatant violation of the smoking policy would not have been tolerated!

If you had been next door to me I would not have been happy and security would have gotten a call. Why go on a line with rules against smoking and then flaunt those rules. Sorry I think it's more than rude.

That was just plain rude. If I had been next to you, I would have call the front desk. This is why I sail on Celebrity. Which is the only line that has this smoking policy. There are how many other cruise lines that do allow you to smoke on the balconys, please next time pick one of those. And leave us non smokers just ONE cruise line that doesn't.

Actually, Azamara has the same smoking policy as Celebrity and it is also enforced there.

It's people like this that probably wear jeans in the dining room on formal night too!

I for one am DELIGHTED of the no smoking in cabins and balconies (& especially the casino). We were about ready to go to oceanview rooms because we were never able to enjoy our balconies due to smokers all around us. If one wasn't smoking the the other one was

We are very surprised by the lax rules on cruise ships regarding smoking. We have seen 1st hand a cabin fire on Princess directly below us. Chain smokers on the deck all day so you know they also smoked in the cabin at night. We woke at 3 a.m. to the smell of smoke. Next morning all the inside furniture was on the balcony. When we asked our room steward about whether there was a fire below us or not, he said "oh no....they were installing new carpet and that is what you smelled". Well, what did they do with the passengers????

Another time....we walked into the inside from the pool deck behind someone smoking and when they got to the door to go in....they laid the cigarette on the little shelf....still lit!

People wake up and smell the coffee (if you still can)....smoking in such a confined area is dangerous! Need I remind you of the Star Princess fire on the balcony from a cigarette being blown down to another balcony?

Off my soapbox now!;)

Huh?:confused:....I guess you just got lucky your neighbors:

1) didn't mind

2) were not there

3) were too afraid to say anything

Glad you were not next to me....

If I were in a cabin near yours I would with great pleasure report you to the pursers office and trust that they would charge your Sea Pass account the $250 per day as stated in the contract you agreed to in order to cruise aboard the Summit. I would also let them tell you that I was the individual that reported you

Celebrity's smoking policy is one of my biggest draws to this line. HAL does not apply to me because I have never sailed them, but I still voted because I'm drawn to X from any line that allows smoking on the balcony, which is almost all of them. In regards to HAL, if I'm not mistaken, all CC owned major lines, like HAL, CCL, and Princess allow smoking in rooms.

I love Princess save one single thing. Their policy (or lack of policy I guess) encourages filthy air. I am not putting up with it anymore and have voted my displeasure 9and I'm a shareholder in Carnival) with my feet.

I switched and will go back I'm sure but right now, the clean air on Celebrity has my bookings.

Selfish nicotine addicts like chriseo will be routed out.

You are so very lucky I, or someone like me, was not your veranda neighbor. I would have asked nicely once, and ONLY once, for you to stop smoking on your balcony. From there, your cruise experience would have quickly deteriorated.

Less than 14% of Celebrity cruisers are smokers! I'm sure this is a lower percentage compared to all other mass market cruise lines.

Well done Celebrity!

Doesn't surprise me. Those who cruise tend to be better off and better educated than the average and according to statistics:

http://www.oralcancerfoundation.org/tobacco/demographics_tobacco.htm

Smoking prevalence was higher among adults living below the poverty level (32.3 percent) than those living at or above the poverty level (23.5 percent).

Education also affects smoking rates. The more formal education, the less likely one is to be a smoker. In 1995, 40 percent of women between the ages of 25 and 44 who did not finish high school were smokers; 34 percent of high school graduates were smokers; 24 percent of those with some college were smokers; and only 14 percent of those who graduated from college were smokers

We cruised Holland last year and it was great. There was one traffic 'pinch" area that was a bar adjacent to the casino -- we held our breath whenever we walked through it. We would never pay for balcony on Holland unless revise their smoking policy

As mentioned -- there is a very vocal group of smokers on the Holland board. Some are refuges from Celebrity -- they claim they'll leave Holland and go to another line if the policy becomes more restrictive. Someday they'll have nowhere to go. Smoking is fast becoming socially unacceptable. Since we're from California, just about the only place we are subjected to other people's smoke is on cruise ships.

If Celebrity would bring a ship back to San Diego, that is the only one we'd sail!
