Free shuttle buses are offered when:

• The ship is docked a long walk from the main thoroughfare
• Taxis and or public transportation are not easily accessible from the port. .
• The port is industrial and not pedestrian-friendly.
• The decision on whether free buses will be offered will be based on the port used and will be made closer to or during the sailing

Once on board, a list of ports that will offer a complimentary shuttle into town will be provided / shown in daily Currents

Assuming the ship docks near the Quayside Terminal, it's about 20-30 minutes to walk to the downtown. (We walked back from the Townsville Yacht Club to the ship on a HAL cruise in 2019 - 20 mins).

 

You do have to go through a semi-industrial area, with limited sidewalks, so a shuttle might well be available. There was a shuttle on our 2019 HAL trip, although that's no guarantee for O of course. 🍺🥌

PORTO: Can anyone advise where the drop off point is for the Oceania shuttle in Porto?  Our tour guide is meeting us in town and I have no idea where to tell her to go and cant get any help from Oceania on this.  If you also know how long the shuttle ride is from the ship to the drop off point that would be very helpful as well. I haven't been to Porto before, but have started doing a little research as I'm on a cruise in April which goes there. I read on a Facebook group for Oceania cruisers (not Oceania's official site) that someone visited Porto (Oporto) this summer. I asked the person if she knew if there was a shuttle to Porto, since cruise ships normally dock in Leixoes, which is a little bit away from Porto. (I'll be on one of the smaller ships (Sirena) and while it's smallish, I don't think it's able to go past there and down the river to Porto. Also, I saw on Marine Traffic that an Azamara ship (same size as Sirena) docked in Leixoes.) 

 

The person I asked didn't know specifically where the shuttle dropped, as she took an Oceania excursion rather than go out on her own.  However, she was told it was a place near a huge church where people could walk down to the river (Duoro) and walk across the bridge to Gaia.  Gaia has wine warehouses, river walk, and apparently a very popular view of Porto.  I've identified a likely shuttle location, at least in terms of area.  However, if you're doing a tour by a third party person/company, it's my guess that they could simply meet you just outside the port at Leixoes. I looked at whatsinport.com to find out more about Leixoes, and there is some good information on there about how to get from the port terminal (new, modern, beautiful) to the center of Porto (or Oporto).

 

I would probably make sure the vendor knows that you're on an ocean-going cruise ship, and that indications are that you are likely to dock in Leixoes.

Thanks for the info. Our itinerary just says Oporto for that port. We have others that say one port and it docks someplace else (such as Cobh for Cork and Ljmuiden for Amsterdam) and this one does not so I am guessing we will dock in Porto proper. I am corresponding with someone on the ship and she cant even get the crew to tell her where right now, we have to wait until next week, like its top secret info lol.

If nothing else, Sirena will be in Oporto next month, so that should provide an answer, at least for me. But it doesn't sound like it will be hard to get to Porto, with or without a shuttle.  It's apparently only a 10 minute ride.  And the port website says taxis are available.   Here's new port terminal in Leixoes.

Yes.  You can walk out of Galataport and look around.  It was a little confusing, though, so you might want to take a map.  (I used Maps.me app on my cell phone, after loading maps pre-trip.)  If you want, you can walk a block or two to find the tram, which goes to Sultanahment area of the city, although I don't know for sure that there are token machines at that particular stop, and if so, whether credit cards are accepted or if you need Turkish lira.  We went to Istanbul a few days early, and I already had an unused tram ticket when we went to the port. Here's some info: https://istanbulclues.com/istanbul-tram-map-t1-line/ You can also walk around the area of Galataport to see a few pretty mosques with few to no tourists (take and wear a head covering), plus a remodeled clock tower and other things. And there are restaurants and shops at Galataport. I imagine you can get a cab from near there, but I simply took the tram to where I wanted to go.  I've been to Istanbul twice now, but always for embarkation/disembarkation, and shuttles are seldom offered by Oceania or a port on those days.   But if you're up for riding the tram, I'd say the tram to Sultanahmet (Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, etc.) might take 10 to 15 minutes.  You can also get to or close to the Basilica Cistern, Market, Topkapi, and my favorite area, Eminonu.   Be forewarned, though, that the tram can be very crowded.  But sometimes it's better (faster) than a taxi if traffic is really bad.

I'm very independent, plus not very particular about the actual hotel, as long as it's in a great location and not very expensive.  So I booked my own hotel and just planned what we would do to explore the city.  But this was our second trip to Istanbul before or after a cruise, plus I love planning, and often don't want to do what everyone else does.  And we're not adverse to using public transportation, either, although in Istanbul it can be very crowded.  So it's rare now, after 15 cruises on Oceania, that we go for any of Oceania's hotels or pre/post cruise activities.  It's not, however, because I don't feel they are good, although we've done few of them over he years. But for being a huge city, I have found it's not terribly hard to do things on your own, especially since many of the things most first time visitors want to see are located in the same general area (Sultanahmet) and fairly accessible by tram or taxi. But certainly something arranged by Oceania for touring would make it a lot easier than trying to navigate by yourself, even with a good online map.  (I used maps.me app).

Probably Istanbul, partly because going there a few days early might help a tiny bit in catching up to the time change (jetlag recovery!), assuming you're flying from North America.  But of course Athens is a wonderful city, too.  So it's a hard choice....

Any info on an Oceania shuttle to town in Limassol, Cyprus?

One of our ports in April 2023 on the Riveria is in Taormina, Sicily. It looks as if we have to tender, I am assuming to Giardini-Naxos. Does anyone know if Oceania provides a shuttle from there to Taormina which is quite close? Also, do they provide a shuttle to Nice from Villefranche? What's in Port says that cruise lines sometimes provide shuttles in both of those ports.

One of our ports in April 2023 on the Riveria is in Taormina, Sicily. It looks as if we have to tender, I am assuming to Giardini-Naxos. Does anyone know if Oceania provides a shuttle from there to Taormina which is quite close? Also, do they provide a shuttle to Nice from Villefranche? What's in Port says that cruise lines sometimes provide shuttles in both of those ports.

I've been to Taormina (via Giardini-Naxos) but don't remember how I got there.  I didn't save any info from back then other than a map and a bus schedule for "Interbus - Etna Transport" between Giardini-Naxos and Taormina.  I vaguely remember a short walk to the bus station.  I think we did tender, but don't remember for sure.  But I would guess that first you would tender to G-N, and then perhaps there will be a shuttle provided (and paid for if necessary) by  Oceania. Oceania DOES arrange/ask for/pay for shuttles in most places as long as you're not in port for embarkation/disembarkation. When in Taormina, if you have extra time, you may want to take a short bus up higher to a little town called Castelmola.  We did that and enjoyed it.

The Oceania shuttle drops off at a park near the Clericos Church right near the city center. Easy walk to the river, Sao Bento train station.
