HA Pizza (YUCK)

DW usually takes a slice at some point on the cruise. I have only seen her eat the enitre piece once-and that was on a Princess cruise some time ago. I have never seen her go back for seconds. That's why I don't even bother with it anymore. There are so many other good things, to our taste, to feed our fat faces with.

Why single out pizza from Terrace Grill? How many of the choices on the menu are better than specialty restaurants on land?

I like being a bit difficult. I was never called "a bold piece of fresh humanity"--just a "bold piece of humanity."

Pizza not so great . Burgers at terrace grill excellent !

:);)<Sarcasm>The burgers sucked!

There's a burger place in Dallas -- Mikes Burger House -- that makes the very best hamburgers in the world! The meat is thick, juicy, and delicious and has bits of cheese and bacon broken up in the patty. They put 3 kinds of cheese on top, and the buns are heated but not soggy or toasted. PERFECT. Why can't HAL burgers be like those from Mike's Burger House? Any other burger is unworthy of the name "burger" and should be fed to dogs. </Sarcasm>:);)

You're on a Dutch ship that's staffed by Indonesians and Filipinos, and expecting great PIZZA?

I don't know where San Francisco old-world pizza craftsmen come from these days but even in the finest Italian restaurants in Baltimore much of the kitchen staff these days comes from El Salvador. As does the kitchen staff of some Thai restaurants. We expect and get good results.

The question is not nationality but our preference based on a pizzeria at home which we like and have grown accustomed to. I am addicted to pizza. Like other food items, you get used to the ship's pizza.

BTW, I had lived my life without ever tassting a Pizza Hut pie until a few days ago. The crust was too doughy, the cheese bland. That's my take. But millions of people love it.

I actually LOVE the Terrace Grill burgers. I was being sarcastic in an attempt to make a point.

Keller's, Jake's and Snuffers make great burgers as well. :)

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO bepsf: First, pizza is more of an international food these days not just Italian. When I lived in Europe they had several pizzerias where I lived. In Israel, guess what, they had pizzerias there too. In fact, wherever I have traveled to there has been pizza. True, some of it may have been bad, but, there was pizza of some sort.

Second, on a ship even if it has Dutch origins, and most cruise lines have pizza why shouldn't Holland America? If they can cook food from most other countries why not pizza? I have had pizza on every ship I have been on and it has ranged from very good Carnival to very bad RCCL. I have even had mixed pizza. On NCL if you order it from the buffet it is very bad. Order pizza from room service it is acceptable or at least better than what they have in the buffet.

This will be my first Holland America cruise coming up. We will see how their pizza is. The pizza may not be the make or break decision on which cruise line to go on, but, food in general is important. Especially on a longer cruise.

Perhaps I will try a piece of cheese pizza on the Nieuw Amsterdam. It will not come up to Uno's, Due's or Lou Malnatii's. Will it be as good as Little Joe's in New Lenox, Illinois?

I had the pizza on the NA in Oct 2010 and it was NOT GOOD lol

However, I'm born and raised in NJ, so I'm used to GOOD pizza :-)

Try it, you never know!

Casino Player -- No one has ever left a cruise hungry. We did a month on the Nieuw Amsterdam in Oct/Nov. After a couple of weeks, its pizza satisfied the urge.

As to ethnicities, at least in Baltimore many of the chain pizzerias are staffed by Pakistanis. . .

It would be reassuring to think that even in Islamabad you could get a good Pizza.:)

You can't in Athens.

So, this is where frozen pizza is considered, and the trick is to use it as a base, and then massage it. Extra cheese, peppers, sausages etc. and work on the baking time and temperature.

This is what you are reduced to when pizza becomes a staple and there isn't a decent pizza in the country:mad:.

I have never had a bad pizza on HAL but food is uneven across the line, as it is in other lines, so it stands to reason every now and again it will disappoint.

I'm looking forward to the pizza on the Rotterdam this summer and will report.

Smooth sailing...

There are far better (healthy) food choices on a cruise other than pizza (or bread pudding, for that matter)! ;) With all the negative reports about HAL pizza, :( (especially when it is left under heat lamps), it would one of the last food items that I would want on a cruise, (along with bread pudding)!

but here in Ocala, Fl we have a pizza place that brings in water from NYC to make the dough. Not desalinated like on the ship. I haven't seen pre baked dough on HAL, just mediocre pies.

Yes it is hard to believe, I wonder where they get the New York water from and how it's shipped, that's gotta make for one expensive pie. Just sayin ;)

overdone and dry. Only order them when I can't find something on the buffet that I like.

My experience has been that the burgers are made and cooked fresh right before my eyes ,

the pizza is n.g.

Now on Princess some years ago , I was most unimpressed with the food but the pizza was OK , then one day they only had one kind of pizza at the lido .

I asked "What kind of pizza is that? " , the answer " It's tuna pizza " , I demanded to see a manager and asked "how could you put tuna on pizza ? " Ugh.

Couldn't agree more.

Frankly we are even easy on pasta when cruising and that means no visits to Caneleto and I am delighted to say with all the truly good food choices available to you onboard it is not unusual to actually lose a pound or two - and still have terrific (and healthy) dinners.

Eliminating pizza from an expats diet is cruel and unusual punishment.

I like to think we eat it as part of a balanced diet :), and as our blood chemistry doesn't raise our doctor's eyebrows and blood pressure doesn't get us the lecture on the hard chairs, we haven't (yet) cut it out.

Your point however, is well taken and appreciated.

Smooth sailing to you...

Frank,

You may be surprised to learn that pizza originally comes from Italy - not New York or Chicago. Most everyone agrees that it is originally from Napoli.

One would think that Princess - being a hybrid of British and Italian cruise lines (and having a great many chefs and cooks from Italy) - might have a good handle on producing good pizza.

When I managed Princess Ships I was amazed at the enormously high number of complaints from our American passengers about the quality of Princess Pizza. The majority of them complained that the pizza was "too Italian".

One might think that would be a good thing...................

But it seems that our American cousins are not very adventurous nor flexible when it comes to leaving their country for a short period. So long as everything tastes and smells exactly the same way it does back home, they are quite happy to see the rest of the world.

By the way, a pizza with tuna is about as authentically Italian as a pizza can get.
