Barb Nahoumi Posted December 16, 2011 #51 Share Posted December 16, 2011 We never leave the country without coverage. One never knows what can happen. Other mishaps can occur such as flight cancellations, which can cause you to miss the ship.
scperk Posted December 16, 2011 #52 Share Posted December 16, 2011 Your medical insurance would pay for your broken leg, and an airline ticket isn't THAT expensive. Plus, pretty sure you could miss the ship at any age:) With a cost of $70/80 per person per cruise thats not a bad investment at all and I'm 62...what that old saying-"hindsight is 20/20"....Dennis
TeresaJ Posted December 16, 2011 #53 Share Posted December 16, 2011 The people posting here about not buying trip insurance are also probably not flying to the cruise port. Factor that into the vacation price for a family of four (for our family about $2,000 added onto the cost of the cruise). I definitely buy cruise insurance because if a snowstorm hits and we can't fly out, the ship does not wait for us!

That being said, I'm sure it's a good idea for you, and for many. I am not trying to discourage anyone from taking insurance. As I said, my DW and I are in our 20's, fly in the day before, don't usually cruise in the winter, have no kids. So our situation is different from many. We're doing a more eleborate, more expensive cruise next year to the med, and we will get cruise insurance for that as the. All depends on your situation. rainbowflag Posted December 16, 2011 #56 Share Posted December 16, 2011 That makes as much sense as saying "The first time you're attacked by a tiger, you'll regret not buying our special tiger insurance." The point is that, by not buying travel insurance, I've already saved more than enough money to pay for a couple of cruises. Travel insurance is grossly over-priced for the amount of coverage provided. In the unlikely event that I did have a cancelled cruise, I would not regret being able to pay for another one with the money I've saved by not buying travel insurance. My primary policy underwritten by Stonebridge cost less than $8.00 per day and the peace of mind I receive from this expense makes me feel better than a DOD in a silly coconut head for the same price. :) To each their own. elcuchio24 Posted December 16, 2011 #57 Share Posted December 16, 2011 That's a big maybe, some policies won't cover medical care in foreign countries (and even though mine does there are restrictions that I don't want to have to worry about). You should deffinetly check to see what your insurance will cover in int'l travel. I just don't understand people to insist on getting cruise insurance and at the same time have no idea what their own medical insurance covers:rolleyes:

You're correct that travel insurance is not an investment but rather than a cost think of it as a "bet" like in blackjack and the insurance company is covering your bet. Rare sparks1093 Posted December 16, 2011 #63 Share Posted December 16, 2011 I know. I was not refering to you, just in general.:) We really aren't that far apart on this because I firmly believe that everyone must make an informed decision on this issue, just as they must with any other decision. pe4all Posted December 16, 2011 #64 Share Posted December 16, 2011 Should have taken the the bus to Cancun, $220pp flights:) It was New Year's Eve, and I was happy just to get out of that Belize hospital. Truthfully, if I could have swam to the U.S., off we would have gone! (or by donkey, camel, etc!):p:D

GaNavy Posted December 16, 2011 #67 Share Posted December 16, 2011 Again, it depends on your situation and personal choice. DW and I's medical insurance covers international evac, as well as having an AMEX with certain insurances to cover missed flights. As far as the cruise itself goes, we are young and have no children, so the chance of missing/canceling is pretty slim. Not to say that it couldn't happen, but if it did, losing out on 2-3k would not be that huge a deal for us. Talk about things that are overpriced! You're correct that travel insurance is not an investment but rather than a cost think of it as a "bet" like in blackjack and the insurance company is covering your bet. Casinos have insurance, too, ya know. ;) Travel insurance isn't an investment but a cost intended to protect an investment - just like all insurance. Here you're laying somewhere between $50 and $80 apiece for most 7-day cruises against the possibility that you'll not be able to cruise (+/- $1000 apiece, depending on cabin selection) or that you'll need medical treatment or evacuation from a foreign country ($the-sky's-the-limit). If losing $2000-3000 would not be that huge a deal for you, congratulations - and hey while we're at it, how about swinging a little of that 2 or 3 large this way? ;) And good luck with your own insurance - I hope you don't have to find out some day that it's not as good as you thought it was. :( Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks, but I can't afford to be taking that risk. Like I said, it's all about your situation. We've cruise, what 20 times in the last 9 years? If we had to eat a 2-3k cruise, it wouldn't be great, but hey that's how it goes. How is that any different than paying 2k for those 20 cruises and not using it? Either way the money is spent. I do know what my insurance covers, because I have taken the time to check. I have NO problem with folks getting travel insurance, it's a smart bet for many situations. The only thing that bothers me are posters that come on her and act like anyone that DOESN'T get travel insurance is an idiot.
Cjlovestocruise Posted December 16, 2011 #69 Share Posted December 16, 2011 I wonder if anyone on the Triumph yesterday regreats not getting trip insurance? I am sure at least a few had non refundable air fair for flight that were missed.
readytotravel44 Posted December 16, 2011 #70 Share Posted December 16, 2011 Why would a person post a question if he has his own answer already? I've easily saved enough money NOT BUYING travel insurance to pay for two cruises. It's grossly overpriced for the risk. It's a personal choice, of course, but I never buy cruise insurance. Bought it once. Didn't use it. We've chanced it since then and have been fine, though I have know idea what will happen in the future. I read these stories and start thinking we've been really lucky so far!

mikefast Posted December 17, 2011 #73 Share Posted December 17, 2011 The first cruise my wife and I booked was to Hawaii in the fall of 2001. We were all packed, and ready to go in about three days. I was listening to the radio, and to my horror, the cruise line had just declared bankruptcy. We had paid cash, and hadn't purchased insurance. We didn't want to unpack, so we booked another cruise leaving that same weekend, but not to Hawaii. Ever since then, we have purchased insurance. By the way, we did luck out on this, the travel agency gave us a voucher for the amount of the cruise for a different cruise. I don't know why they did that, they sure weren't under any obligation to do it. But we were sure thankful that they did.

Talisker92 Posted December 17, 2011 #75 Share Posted December 17, 2011 My wife always insists we get trip insurance. On our last cruise she contracted a lung infection, spent 3 days in a shore hospital. Our airline reservations expired, and the bottom line was we were out over $4000. Our trip insurance covered the hospital bills and return tickets home. All it takes is one time!
