Why So Many Posts Concerned About Spring Breakers?

Recommended Posts

Seems like everyone is terified of running into kids on their cruise. I have cruised in spring and never had an issue with kids on a ship.

In fact, the only obnoctious people I have ever had the displeasure of sailing with was a group of 30something men celebrating a bachelor party on Monarch last March! Apparently they were expert smugglers. :o I dont think I got any sleep the entire cruise

On most cruises I never even see kids. They must hide them somewhere with the stowaways on the ship! Those kids clubs really must do an awesome job of entertaining them.

Now, I would not choose to dine with a family of small children in the MDR because we are done with that stage of life. At the Windjammer, pool areas, etc. , the kids don't bother me. And, I am NOT a kid friendly person.

Really fellow cruises, I am more concerned there will be too much smoke from the smokers in the casino and public smoking areas and balconies than I am of kids.

Is it really that horrible?

If it is that much of a concern, why not choose an adult only, or non-family oriented cruise line?

Agreed.

My birthday week, when I most like to cruise, is almost always during a Spring Break possible period.

I'm not overly fond of most teenagers but they are large ships and really they have just as much right to vacation on a cruise as any of the rest of us.

You're right, they do have as much right to vacation on a cruise as any of the rest of us... which is why people respectfully try to avoid being on the kid heavy ones.

We book cruises early February for this reason. We have kids and like them when they're well behaved and raised with manners. Too many parents these days don't seem to do that though or they think "it's vacation so they can do whatever they want". So I would just prefer to avoid them as much as possible.

Why do you care or do you really care? Some people avoid hurricane season and some kid heavy season. They don't need to justify why.

When do you guys ever even see these horribly behaved children running wildly around the ship? I have been on 10 cruises, most in spring or early summer, and I just never have experienced this?

Am I missing something?

The only time I really see a lot of kids is in the Buffett area in the morning and pool area in the afternoons and evening. Rarely a family will dine with kids in the MDR. We do late seating, so maybe the families are dining early seating?

I just don't see what the big deal is. Or, maybe I am just enjoying my vacation too much to pay attention to kids on the ship?

You hit it right on the spot! If your vacation is too much fun, you are not going to notice the kids and you'll learn to brush off the distractions! On my first 2 cruises, we had fun...period!

This issue is the only one that gripes me a little. If kids aren't supposed to be in the adult areas then their parents need to deal with that. The Solarium is supposed to be one of those places but I've seen kids taking up valuable real estate there on every ship in the line that has one. Oddly enough Disney is about the only cruise line that enforces this rule.

It isn't the kids. Its the parents who either cannot read or just ignore the no children under 18 signs.

I don't care how many kids are on the ship.

I care when idiot parents can't control them at dinner, shows, or anyplace else

And teens are fun! They at least try to have fun... Remember when you thought running around, listening to music, drinking was fun?

Enjoy life.. Let others enjoy life.. Just don't impede on others enjoyment!!

LaShelle2, no offense but just because you have never seen it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. There have been numerous threads here over the years about "groups" of people, kids included, who took over a ship and were uncontrolled - the Quinceañera girls are often written about having taken over the ship.

It happens. *shrug*

I had an some issues with too many kids on a cruise on the Explorer. This particular cruise had over seven time the average of kids on board.

They were stealing do not disturb and room service cards off peoples doors down the whole hallway(including Mine).

There was one instance there were four teens in the adults only hot tub sitting on the ledge backwards looking out at the pool so I had a nice view of their backs instead of the festivities going on by the pool.

I was standing by Studio B and some youngster was shouting something to me from the level above. When I looked up to see where it was coming from he said something like "yea thats right I'm talking to you".

They in no way ruined the cruise for me but certainly didn't enhance it.

I work with teens who are involved in the juvenile justice system. I love what I do, and love the young men I work with. When I'm on vacation I try my best to not be reminded of the guys I work with. It's not 100% possible, but if I can cruise at times of the year when there aren't as many reminders I will. I have never had a problem with kiddos on a cruise, but then again most of the time I'm on a ship at a different time than most of them are.

That is the way I like it, who are you to judge why I cruise at times when the kiddos are in school, and not on my cruise?

How much time do you need to spend posting about something you claim to not care about?

We avoid spring break for a couple of reasons, one being price ... why pay $300 more for the same cruise? The one time we relented (friends of ours with school-age children wanted us to "guide" them through their first cruise) we encountered much of what folks complain about ... teens and "young adults" (most of them pretty well intoxicated) running through the halls at all hours (had to call security at least three times), chldren amusing themselves by pressing every elevator button, unsupervised youngsters being in areas where they're not supposed to be, etc.

But what sealed it for us was the behavior of about forty of America's future leaders, obviously stressed from the rigors of higher education. They literally commandeered the adults-only pool and hot tubs, and most were pretty well hammered by 10:00 a.m. I'd bet the ranch that all but one or two were under 21 ... but those buckets of beer kept coming. The security staff onboard did absolutely nothing, despite complaints from at least a dozen passengers ... in fact, they seemed intimidated and overwhelmed by the situation.

If the likelihood of running into such behavior is increased because of the time of year, we'd simpy rather not take the chance ... and pay a premium price. It's spring break here this upcoming week ... which is one reason why I'm home writing this.

I board the Mariner today:D for my 8th consecutive Spring Break cruise. Even though we don't have children, I work in an elementary school so if we want to cruise, SB is when we have to go! We've only had a problem with out-of-control children once, and that was with a pack of 14-17ish kids who literally made everyone's life miserable while their parents took a vacation from parenting.

That said, the ships are much more crowded at Spring Break because many of the 3rd and 4th berths are taken. Our SB cruises have had between 1,000-1,300 children on them. Cruises from Galveston also sharply increase in price for Spring Break. If you don't have to cruise during SB, I can see lots of reasons to avoid it, but I don't find it to be the horror people imagine it to be.

Galveston is particularly vlunerable to such "attacks" (that's where our experience occured) since virtually all passengers drive to the port, thus eliminating airfare and making the cruise affordable for families. I guess it just comes with the territory ... enjoy your cruise.

We've cruised on the Freedom during Spring break with over 900 kids who were not a problem. The atmosphere on the ship for the week was great. Where we did encounter an issue was on the so called 'deluxe' beach break in Cozumel with drunken young adults who caused havoc with their antics. Responsible parents will look after their children.

I certainly didn't and I'm 42. Not all of us are drinkers. I still am not. I can still count the number of times I've been drunk in my life on my hands and can tell you where/when every time was. I didn't do drugs or alcohol or do anything I wasn't supposed to at such a young age.

I'll bet you always reminded the teacher right before dismissal on Friday that she forgot to give the weekend homework assignment too :(

As a teacher.... I have to do spring break and been doing it for years. Some years it is not too bad, and others it can be very rowdy. I find the college kids are often worse than the teenagers, but not for lack of trying. In general... it is about the weather. On the last day home, if it turns cold, the teenagers can be a real problem without the pools and out door areas to run in.

I did, but I would not, at this age, want to party with my "early adult" rowdy self.

I do avoid the kids, teens, and young adults, without a doubt. I avoid the smokers too. I avoid pretty much everyone that doesn't share my lifestyle. Cheers! :)

We were on a 9 day on Enchantment sailing on 18 Feb.

I didn’t know that our cruise coincided with some sort of school break.

There were lots of kids.

I didn’t see any real problems. But I did notice that near the end of the cruise the kids seemed to be forming packs, and they were getting louder. We had quite a bit of cold weather and I guess that caused the kids to stay inside.

I wonder how the Disney ships handle kids? Do they have trouble with bunches of kids causing disruptions?

DH and I were on Monarch two years ago during Spring Break. There were lots of college age kids, but as they were on a totally different time schedule than us fogeys, no problems. DH may have enjoyed the poolside vistas......

Those of us with families have no choice but to travel during the times the kidos are out of school. I board the jewel next saturday for a father-son cruise.. I am sure at some point during the cruise my son will do something stupid.. 17 yearolds have that tendency. But I will be there to set him straight.

For those of you that didn't test your limits as kids you are either extremely well raised or have memory issues. I personally pulled some stupid S--t as a kid. Thankfully I lived through it. Glad I experienced most of it as it made me the man I am today.

As far as behavior on the cruises parents need to be parents...Vacations are not an excuse to let the kids run free.. it is a great time to spend as a family.

Thats my 2 cents

I am looking forward to my spring break cruise (although my wife says its her vacation as the boys will be out of the house for a few days)

I guess having 4 kids now in their late teens and 20s makes me immune to certain things.

I have never seen the spring breaker set doing anything so terrible .

Having a good time, sure, but not to the extent they were causing damage or risk of injury to anyone.
