We did a Mercury cruise back in 2005 during the super bowl because it was a good time was us to get away. That cruise had a rather elderly crowd so the event had no impact on our cruise whatsoever. Even though there was a big screen for people who wanted to watch it, there was no feeling at all on the ship that it was special show. Based on our experience, I would not recommend a Celebrity cruise as an alternative for going to a good super bowl party.

Regarding my previous post quoted above - Since I only took one cruise during a super bowl it is possible that it was an anomaly, which was not representative of what a super bowl cruise is usually like. In addition, Mercury is very very different than the newer ships in Celebrity's Fleet.

We did a Super Bowlc Cruise two years ago on Royal Caribbean Monarch of the Seas. Small ship and the oldest, but very nice and we had a ball! They set up various buffets around the ship with food so people didn't have to leave to eat, and every public TV on the ship was tuned in. Lots of noise and drinking, but it was fun. The ship really catered to the football crowd while the game was on.:)

Please can someone explain all this Super Bowl thing to a Brit.

Firstly how comes your rivalry is so friendly? Go to a (UK) football match and mix with the wrong fans and the result can be pretty ugly leaving you counting your teeth. That is not to say one beats up their friends, but even when talking to friends who support rival teams, they can expect a roasting and to be put down. Then the discussion changes and everyone is as if nothing happened.

Secondly we don't celebrate the FA cup final with hotdogs, bar B Qs or turn it in to a major event. Perhaps we should. Maybe we need to drop the violence from the terraces and have a little respect for each other, but that is not going to happen. But most people turn on the TV and sit there for 90 mins. Then after complain that there aren't many decent British footballers and why should they be paid £250,000 a week for a performance like that?

What is an approx wage per year for an American footballer at the top of their game?

Thirdly who would I support as my team? I notice there are some "Skins" fans.

Ummm I don't think that could be my team as when you start to count the players you would go "1 skin, 2 skin , 3 skin, 4..." etc

I have no allegiance to any state though I like NY as a holiday spot and I have sailed from FLL. Is it better to pic a premium team or go with an underdog? Can someone help me pick one?

I think it would be a lot of fun to join in the celebrations as long as someone could explain to me what is going on. Im sure there would be a hugely warm atmosphere to those unfamiliar with the game

We were on the Jewel of the Seas for last year's Super Bowl and had a great time and would do it again if the opportunity arose. It may be easier if your favorite team isn't involved since the possibility of their loss might effect the rest of your cruise, but then again a victory might seem even more special.:)

I would not, particularly if the Skins were playing. Perhaps with their new anticipated quarterback those days may yet again occur.

The Skins have participated in five Super Bowls; and, they have prevailed in three. I was in attendance at the two they lost.

Go Skins!!!

Hello,:):) the SUPERBOWL is the National Football League's Championship

game. There are 32 teams....16 in the AFC and 16 in the NFC....

The season starts in early Sept and ends in early Feb. The winners

of the AFC play the winners of the NFC....AFC is "American Conference"

NFC is "Nantional Conference". Both conferences are split up into

divisions.

How are folks so friendly? Not everyone is but most are;)

Who would you support? Usually it is the city you live in....if they

have a team....for those cities that don't? The area of the country

they live in....or maybe their family has always supported a certain

team..........

As for how much money the player's make??? Oh...ALOT OF MONEY

They don't usually get paid for only 1 year as most sign longer

contracts......the BIG STARS get BIG MONEY......example, one of the

best Wide Recivers in the entire league just signed a new contract...

for 8 more years......132 MILLION dollars.....not sure what that is

in English pounds.

Anyway,...who would you cheer for? I know all 32 teams....

if you google the NFL you can see them too:D

As far as the friendliness amongst supporters of rival teams, most are friendly, though some fans are true fanatics and will engage in a lot of "smack-talking," citing statistics, history and sometimes just wishful thinking about how their team is the best there is and how other teams, especially those close to one another geographically, "suck." Most are adults and realize it's just a game, though I did have someone on our roll call for the last cruise threaten to vomit in my cheesehead.

Lois answered the second question, though I'll add that the average yearly salary is $1,900,000 (about £1,200,000), at least as of last year. Keep in mind that with continuous training, workouts, training camps, and preseason games, it's a year-round occupation.

As far as who to support, it depends on who makes it to the Super Bowl. There are playoffs that determine the AFC and NFC champions, and they meet at a city and stadium selected a few years in advance. You may check to see who the oddsmakers say are favored to win the game, then either support the favorite on the grounds that they apparently have the better team and should win, or the underdog since it's always sweeter when the underdog beats the odds. Since you have ties, somewhat, to the New York and Miami areas, you might wish to root for either the New York Giants, the New York Jets, or the Miami Dolphins, should any of those teams make it to the big game.

The "Skins" fans referred to are fans of the Washington Redskins, whose nickname harkens from less enlightened times, and is now considered by many to be a racial slur against Native Americans (or American Indians). "Political correctness" may cause them to change their name at some point, but I don't think it's really considered to be an urgent issue with most. Without turning this into a political discussion, I think many fans of that team refer to themselves as Skins fans simply as verbal shorthand, though Skins is less insensitive than Redskins. The team has not enjoyed good fortunes of late (one could say they "suck"), so are not likely to make an appearance in the Super Bowl in the near future. I do have to be careful about what I say about other teams, since I am a part owner (along with 360,000 other people) of an NFL team, the Green Bay Packers, the only publicly owned team in the league.

Hi Steve, hope you are doing well:) we did have fun on that

cruise, didn't we:D

Hi, Lois! The memories still bring a smile to my face!

We decided to buy tickets for this year's Super Bowl back when the Packers were 13-0, thinking this was our best chance to see them win a Lombardi Trophy in person. When they lost to the Giants in the playoffs, I could have sold the tickets (and made a nice profit), but we decided to go, anyway. We rooted for the Patriots (or, rather, against the Giants), but enjoyed ourselves regardless. For the halftime show, we were all given small LED flashlights and instructed to shine them on stage during the last song. So now, I can legitimately claim to have flashed Madonna.:D I have to say that I enjoyed the Super Bowl on Summit more, but then again, the Packers were playing.

I haven't been on Cruise Critic much lately. Too much other stuff going on in our lives right now.

Minnesota's team is the Vikings (lots of Norwegians here). They are a big rival of Steve's team, the Greenbay Packers. (Wisconsin is known for its cheese - so they are cheeseheads. Hence his hat).

The Vike's claim to fame is that for a while they had a great team and made it to the Superbowl several years running - and lost lost lost. For the last several years they have tried with heros from other teams, but still do not make it to the championship.

Luckily, I could care less - but I do like a good party. :D I will probably stop by for the wings.

Aboard the Seabourn Legend in Feb. 2011. My daughter and I were designated captains of our respective teams (Steelers vs. Packers). As my beloved Packers won the game, I got to blow the ship's horn.

Now that was a party - food galore and, of course, open bar.:) Yeah, I'd do it again in a heartbeat.......

Why not? I have my life and the players have theirs. They don't care about me or my family and life goes on no matter what happens. The rich get richer and the athletes demand more. Use to be a fanatic, season tickets, attended away games, different stadiums and etc but it kind of lost it luster for me. I guess I got burned out.

I had it on and watched it but dont really remember who played or who won, Not a priority in the grand scheme of things.

If it means that the cruise price is a better deal because of it great.

Don't think I would want to be away during all of the Super Bowl build-up, the top commercials during the pre-game, the game itself, etc. Too much to miss. BUT, we were on a Norway fjords and North Cape cruise during early July 2010 when the World Cup was happening in South Africa. It was fun to be on a ship as the different crew members were pulling for the various teams from their home countries to be the winners during the quarter and semi finals. For the final game, below is a picture of the "party" we did in our room to watch the final game. It was fun to see and do a game that way, especially as you are sailing in such a super scenic area.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Did a June 7-19, 2011, Solstice cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik. Enjoyed great weather and a wonderful trip. Dozens of wonderful visuals with key highlights, tips, comments, etc., on these postings. We are now at 68,929 views for this live/blog re-cap on our first sailing with Celebrity and much on wonderful Barcelona. Check these postings and added info at:

For details and visuals, etc., from our July 1-16, 2010, Norway Coast/Fjords/Arctic Circle cruise experience from Copenhagen on the Silver Cloud, check out this posting. This posting is now at 62,555 views.

For our World Cup Championship Game, Spain versus Holland, July 2010, this was our “PARTY” set-up in our room as we sailed south along the Norway coast. It worked well for size with six in that space. We ordered off of the regular room service menu. In place of dining in the main DR, we had our dinning in the suite. Eight people would have been too tight for such a party in a regular suite. Three couples worked well. Great fun!!:

Just noticed I had a cruise booked next year on Superbowl Sunday. Just wondering what others would do.

Superbowl Sunday falls during my favorite time to cruise. Celebrity seemed to go over the top with celebrations this year (drink specials, pails of beer, tailgate type buffet, game televised in the theater). It was great fun for those into the event. That is the good thing about a cruise ship. You join in if you want to or you find something else to do. I fell into the later category and had a great day!

Sorry for the pun!

Anyways, I sailed on the Eurodam during the 2011 Super Bowl and had a great time! They showed the game in the theater and had a tailgate buffet set up including some of the best wings I ever had. Buckets of five beers for the cost of three was nice too! The one thing I was worried about was the possibility of missing the commercials. I read that they don't show commercials during the game while at sea. Fortunately for me, they showed all the commercials which can be as entertaining as the game.

We are booked on the eclipse for a 14 day cruise in 2013 that will be during the Super Bowl. Did Celebrity show the commercials during the game? Was the game available in the cabins? What were the drink specials and types of food served?

Thanks!

Hi:) I sailed during the 2011 Superbowl. No, they did not show the

commercials. If that is important to you? At least you know ahead

of time and I guess you can TIVO them and watch them upon

your return home.

Yes, they showed the game in the Theater, in the Casino and yes

in your cabin as well.

They served all sorts of food in the Theater....finger foods,

a chef with a carving station, fruits, wings, etc...etc...etc...etc...

desserts too. I cannot remember drink specials.

They also had a smaller setup of food in the casino too.

They also had "The Squares Game" in the Casino. They had a choice

of 10.00 and 20.00 squares.

Actually, Lois, they did show the commercials, at least in the theater. I was impressed by the fact that they were showing the FOX affiliate feed, the same (normally scrambled) feed that goes out to all the local affiliates for them to rebroadcast-- all it's missing are the local spots (commercials), which each station airs by cutting away from the network feed. That means Celebrity had to have made arrangements with FOX to get the proper decoding equipment (and the codes) to air them. I once worked for a local TV station.

However, I've heard that in Super Bowls past, they've only shown an international ESPN channel that filled all the commercial positions with soccer promos. Hopefully, they will stay with ponying up the necessary money to obtain the affiliate feed of whatever network is carrying the game that year.
