Facebook - HAL gone crazy?

Is it really smart to blast all over Facebook that you will be traveling? Many people leave an empty house when they travel though, of course, some of us don't but why advertise..... IMO

 

 

Even though we always have a dog sitter who lives in when we travel, I still wouldn't advertise that fact on HAL's Facebook page.

Thank you...I do agree with many, including you! I also dont text. blog or use a cell phone unless in a dire emergency.

 

Now, a quick reference about face book, I recently heard a most interesting summary of the whole face book and like social media.

I'm so with you! I finally de-friended a few people. One felt the need to tell you when she gets a coffee. The other one had to let you know when she dropped her bracelet in the toilet. Some people really need to get a life.

Yes The HAL facebook page is a little different. They have contests,they have passengers send in photos,they have tid-bits about the company.

 

unlike other sites that have a dress code thread,a soda card thread, and a bring your own wine thread every single day 365 days of the year.

I did get a blast of HAL posts to my wall this morning, and was considering unliking them if it was to keep up.

 

But I agree with others, I never post when I am going to be gone on public sites -- although my information on websites won't get you diddly squat because it's not my real address, location, birthday or name.

Anyone who is on Facebook - and it's easy for anyone to get on - has full access to the Roll Calls. That would make me kind of nervous, and why I would never join one through a site other than CC. And I don't put a countdown clock in my signature anymore.

I do have Facebook - I like it - but I don't click on any "likes" for business, politics or anything like that.

It is a good way to keep in touch with family & some close friends, exchange pictures, etc. Having said that, I just got a notice from a friend who is all excited because she was up to 3,000 friends on FB!! :eek: So I un-friended her because I won't have all those people seeing my page. I've got about 50, most of them family. That's more than enough!!

In some ways, it's very similar to CC - there are ways you can ignore anyone you don't want to have contact with and you don't have open everything you get.

This "facebook or not" argument has been hashed over before. It gets ridiculous when name calling begins at people who use it (the word "moron" is not exactly a compliment). If you don't like something it's not necessary to insult those who do. If you do use it, the same applies. I am a facebook user, along with millions of others all over the world - that's the exciting part and I stay in touch with family thousands of miles away through it, as well as many cruisers I have met along the way. But I don't find it necessary to insult people who choose not to use facebook.

 

The original post involved HAL's roll calls on facebook. Let's stick with that, shall we?

I no longer do F/B. Wish I could cancel it - tried but it didn't work.:mad: I don't give a rat's A-- what my friends are thinking as they drive to XYZ Store or that "Joe Blow from Timbuctoo" have befriended F/B. Wish HAL would get off F/B.:rolleyes:

1) Go to your Facebook Home Page

2) Go to "Account Settings"

3) Click on "Security" - Left top part of page.

4) Then click on "deactivate account"

Actually, "deactivating" your account won't delete it. It just means no one else can see you anymore, but if you log back in, everything is still there.

 

If you want to permanently DELETE your account, log in to it.

 

If you have the new timeline (not sure these instructions are the same for the old format)

 

On the very top right hand side of your page, it says your name, then "find friends", "home" and then there's a little arrow pointing down. Click on the arrow. A menu will come up that says "advertise on Facebook", "Account Settings", "privacy settings", "log out" and "help". Click on "help"

 

Another menu will pop up that has a search box on top, then "manage your news feed", "sharing", "notifications", "ticker", "privacy", then "don't see your issue above? visit the help center or report a problem". Click on "visit the help center"

 

a whole new page should open with the help center. In the search box type "delete account" and enter

 

Click on "how do I permanently delete my account?"

 

the next page will explain to you the difference between deactivating you account and deleting it. Then it says "if you would like your account permanently deleted with no option for recovery, log in to your account and "fill out this form". If you're already logged in, then just click on the blue text "fill out this form".

 

A new page will open where you can click on "delete my account".

 

It's a pain in the butt to get there, but this will PERMANENTLY and COMPLETELY DELETE your account.

as an IT professional, i can tell you NOTHING is ever permanently deleted. you may not be able to see it anymore but someone can. facebook and google are especially fond of their data. google, for instance, has a copy of every search ever executed.

^ OMG you said it and I was thinking it! That was AMAZING! Truly WELL PLAYED! :D;):D

 

FB is electronic self gratification for far too many, it is their way of crying out for the attention that they crave due to massive inferiority complexes.

 

I do have a FB acct, I have pictures of my horse/pets on there. Beyond posting an occassional Y T video of a band that is amazing, it is only a means for me to stay in contact with those of importance... or to crack wise on the idiocacy of the electronic self gratifiers.

 

It is only AOL for the 21st century and it has jumped the shark.

That can pretty much be said for anything on the net. Which is why there are career fields like computer forensic specialists. For those who think they're safer on Cruise Critic then Facebook.....you're not. Hackers are everywhere and your posts can all be traced to your computer's IP address....which means right where you're sitting typing away. Cc isn't any "safer" then FB. Oh and every time I come to CC, my McAffee Virus software goes red on alert telling me this is a dangerous site.

A Private Proxy Server is one answer... A pain, but a firewall.
