We are just off Carnival and NCL and only night I had to wear pants was formal nights on Carnival, is that the same on RcL? Its been 2 years since we have been on it and are leaving in 7 weeks on Brilliance out of NJ, especially when we have port days 4 days in a row.

Thanks a bunch

I believe you have to wear "pants" at all times. They've relaxed the requirements a bit, but I don't think they've gone that far yet, :D

You will get clobbered here with even the slightest mention of wearing shorts to the MDR for dinner. Truth of the matter is though, you most likely will not be turned away.

Myself? I never wear shorts to the MDR. I really dont care what others wear though as long as they are wearing something :D

Do not know why it would bother people if I had presentable shorts on non formal nights, how does that affect the quality of the service or food :)

Thanks!

i am not a member of the fashion police, you can wear whatever you want, i would only notice if umm uhhh ohh. the heck with it,if you look damb good.but i kinda think (and only for myself )that shorts dont fit the going out to a nice dinner vibe going on in mdr.but again its your cruise its your money do with it what you please.

Good to know as we sail Sunday. I forgot to ask TA this question and didn't know if I'd be safe with capri's. DH is not happy to have to wear pants as he is a shorts kind of guy but he also doesn't want to stick out like a sore thumb. It's all I can do to convince him to go to ONE formal night! Living in FL the dress code is very casual everywhere.

It is so silly that especially on port days where you get back at 4 that you are required to wear long pants, its not that nice of a dinner where you are sitting with a thousand people, they need to relax and remember this is a cruise and a vacation for many

Yes...grown-up pants for men, and capris or slacks for women. shorts are not for dinner, but may be worn to breakfast and lunch in the dining room!

Why can grown ups not wear shorts for dinner?

Who gets hurt by this exactly?

So first night, no luggage to room, have to dine in what he's boarded in.... not allowed in the MDR in his shorts? That's ridiculous. Just saying. Don't have a man in tow so doesn't affect me.

Hi NorbertsNeice ~ I'm certainly no expert like lots of the folks here but I think that on 1st night and last night it is anything goes on the basis your cases may not be with you.

Sure someone will correct me if I made a mistake with that ;-)

I have never really understood why it is more comfortable to wear shorts than pants. Both have 2 legs that you must slip on. Your not outside in the sun, but sitting at a table, with a table cloth, and 2 servers taking care of you. It's not really the type of setting that one should be dressed down in. Any jeans or long pants are good, but once you start wearing shorts, than comes the t-shirts and flip flops, than the ship becomes Carnival. :D

Thankfully, I still see people get turned away for violations. I have even seen people get turned away in the buffet on RCCL.

I do not wear pants much unless it is an occasion and find shorts much more comfortable especially on vacation. I will just change right after dinner every night, plus we have to fly home so were looking to take less clothes, i find no joy in watching people getting turned away, they spent their money but everyone is different, i do not think i even looked at the tables around us the last cruise and could not tell you what they wore

the sign outside of the MDR reads "no shorts in dining room during the evening meal". rules are rules.---even if cruisers decide to break this rule, it is still a rule that most educated cruisers follow... and the key word here is MOST...

I just got back from a cruise on Saturday and I did see a about 3 or 4 people in shorts in the MDR. It's your vacation and you can wear what you want. I like to dress up since I don't usually do that all the time. If you are someone that is always dressed in slacks for work then wear shorts if thats what you want. People do dress smart casual and even formal on most nights but like I said it's YOUR vacation and you should do what makes you happy as long as it is allowed. take pants just in case :-)

No you should take an NCL or Carnival cruise where it is considered appropriate. It is your vacation and if that is the atmosphere you desire go for it.

I don't see how the presence of what amounts to literally about a foot long tube of fabric between the knee and the ankle effects comfort.

Now packing, I can sort of get. And maybe pants might affect what shirt is worn, probably for the better. I hate shorts on men at better restaurants at home, even in the summer in FL, something I pick and choose battles with DH about. It's not that hard to make an effort, even if you wear the same dockers every night for an hour and a half. I just don't see how it's any more comfortable. Is it because you probably wouldn't wear sandals or sneakers? DH packs a loafer of sorts to wear with his slacks to dinner on the ship.
