We would like to know the best way - time and cost of getting to the Mt. Montmorency Falls from where the ship docks.

We are also planning on going to upper and lower town - information on the best way to combine everything would be greatly appreciated.

Haven't actually been to the falls so can't help you with that, however we did see them from the ship early in the am on approach to Quebec. The upper and lower town are right next to the ship an easy walk. It is close enough you can come and go as you please if your ship is overnight in port.

I do not understand why the falls are so popular. After dozens of visits to Quebec and driving past them on our way to the ski hills, we stopped in on our last trip. They are OK, but they are not Niagara. There is so much to see and do in Quebec and you can do it entirely on your own if you wish.

If you want a drive into the countryside then renting a car and going to Ile D'Orleans is an option. If you have rented a car then going to the Falls for a quick stop may be worth it. You can drive up to the top to save the time and money that the cable car takes.

Hi, going to be in Quebec overnight on a cruise ship. We know about upper and lower town. We love art... are considering renting a car... but would love to know some things that people feel we should see or that would be fun. What are some things to do in Quebec?

Thank you

We toured it in March and even then it is delightful. You can do a loop around the entire island or start going counterclockwise on the Chemin Royal and see how far you get. There are a couple roads which go across though they don't show on the map unless you zoom way in.

https://maps.google.ca/maps?q=%C3%8Ele+d%27Orl%C3%A9ans,+L%27%C3%8Ele-d%27Orl%C3%A9ans+Regional+County+Municipality,+QC&hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=46.902431,-71.008072&spn=0.237856,0.676346&sll=44.004261,-62.918551&sspn=8.010861,21.643066&oq=ile+d%27orleans&hnear=%C3%8Ele+d%27Orl%C3%A9ans&t=m&z=11

The island is full of small galleries, craft shops, boutique food and wine shops, restaruants, etc. There are some lovely homes, especially around the southern tip.

HI all!

ww2 ~ if you're into Churches the Basilica of Ste Anne de Beaupre looks like a beauty, lots of gold & crutches etc from healed people. It has 179 reviews on TA. We're going on our cruise 2 weeks from tonight (yippee!!) & hope to take a tour which includes the Falls, Ile D'Orleans & Ste Anne. Quebec City is a nice place just to walk around or take the funicular up from the lower town to the terrace by Chateau Frontenac.

If you are an active person, then consider renting bicycles to the falls. It is an easy 1 hour 15 min ride each way. You can rent bikes within walking distance from the ship for $25/4 hours. They have top quality hybrid bikes:

Then if you get back a little early, you can use the bikes to ride around town for an hour or so. It is a nice, well marked trail to the falls. The shop can give you a map and show you exactly where to go. And you get a little excercise in the process.

There is an electric "e" bus that will save lots of walking. It stops near the pier exit to the street....turn left at the street and walk until you see the sign. You can use US currency. For visiting upper town, take it to the last stop (excellent visitor center, film, and park with views) and then walk back along your selected route. Using the steps, lower town will be on your route back.

There is a public bus that leaves from upper town and has a stop along its route for Mt. Montmorency Falls. Consider a car rental for better use of your time and include seeing some of the countryside as well. Tours of the falls that include highlights of the countryside are also a good choice.

We just returned from the 10-day E.Canada itinerary on the NCL Gem. Nice cruise, we had some rain in Nova Scotia, but the 2 days in Quebec were beautiful and warm. Walked around Quebec City on our 1st day, and took the ship's tour to Ste. Anne de Beaupre and Montmorency Falls on our 2nd day. Even though the falls are not of the same scale of Niagara, they were still impressive, and the site features a lovely Manor House and gardens at the top. We also were treated to a 3rd stop on our tour to view the incredible copper artwork of Albert Gilles and his family, which we found very interesting.

There is a lot to do and see while in the port of Quebec.

Do we need to exchange our US Dollars for the ports in Canada?

Just returned -- most places were giving a 5% exchange -- meaning your US dollar was worth 95 cents. Some however would call it even -- if returning money, it was generally Canadian. Vicki:)

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO dmedward:You should always exchange your money when going into another country. Exchange rates may not always be favorable. Do it at a bank. Bank of Nova Scotia, Bank of Canada are two banks that you will find in many places.

About the Falls -- loved them! It is flat boardwalk all the way to the base of the Falls -- where you can feel the mist.

The cable car (one w/c or scooter per cable car trip fits in nicely) is another thrill -- goes over the Falls -- $$$ ($16?) and leaves you at the top -- if one walks straight up the hill to the left, making second turn to the right behind restaurant and follows dirt path, it leads to the suspension bridge which you can go out on -- pathway after bridge leads to another road where taxi or van could pick you up. Otherwise, you have to take cable car back down -- another charge OR do lots of steps.

We found it exciting and about a 30 minute drive from port. Taxis were charging $65/hr. and wanted to speak French. On the way back we had the taxi drive us to the Hotel (top) and took the funicular down -- also accessible one at a time. Cobblestones and cracked sidewalks, but doable with scooter.

Loved the Falls -- glad we did not miss them and worth whatever it cost -- you are there, make the most of it! Vicki:)

Off of Gem this morning. Had a great cruise even though the weather didnt cooperate in Sydney and Corner Brook. Here are a few suggestions:

-Layers

-Car service for post cruise, taxi line in the rain was terrible.

-For a screech in in corner brook check out the Broadway 74 pub...$10

-We were docked right in town in Halifax and enterprise, Alamo and dollar? Share an office in the railroad terminal...very convenient but they didn't have enuff cars for their reservations. Thifty is in the westin next door so you might want to get. Backup reservation

-our two pound lobster dinner at Murphy's on the waterfront In Halifax was tasty and $39 each...rumor has it that lobster dinners at Fisherman's Cove were $9 per pound.

-prepare yourself for some walking in Quebec. All of it uphill, LOL

-loved our rental car day in QC, we went to the falls and then to ile d'orleans...beautiful! Delicious meal at Le Boulangerie about halfway round on e east side.

Have a great cruise!

This is a chicken and egg conundrum, but making back up reservations and then canceling or not showing up is what leads rental companies to not have enough vehicles. They can generally count on not needing as many vehicles as are reserved.

  • 6 months later...

Fantastic information from you all! Am just now getting around to making port plans for Quebec City next month. We overnight there at the end of our cruise on Voyager of the Seas. We are scheduled to arrive in port at 0800 on the Friday and then disembark the cruise the next morning, Saturday, at 0700. Our flight does not leave until 4:20 pm. I had thought to perhaps spend the first day, Friday, exploring Quebec City and then the second day, Saturday, before our 4:20 flight, to rent the car to explore Ile DOrleans area. That way we have a car to tote our luggage around for the day and perhaps get us to the airport (if we can pick up the car near the port and drop off at airport without huge fees for the different location drop off). The other option would be to do the car rental to explore Ile DOrleans on day one and then use the evening to explore Quebec City and then the next full day before our flight, spend more time exploring Quebec City. We would have to store luggage for the day somewhere if we do this and then would take a taxi to the airport in the afternoon. Has anyone experience with car rental at the port and drop off at the airport or knowledge about luggage storage at the port area?

I did find out from the Quebec City Port website that they provide full day luggage storage in the terminal for $4 per piece on days of disembarkation. That would open up the option for exploring old town that day before going to the airport without having to drag luggage around. Enterprise only opens at 0900 on the Saturday so we would have to kill some time before picking up the rental car if we do the Ile DOrleans drive that day. From the Enterprise website, it doesn't look like we can do one way car rental except from the airport but I will have to check further and will check with Hertz as well. So far it looks like renting the car for the day on Friday to do Ile DOrleans on day one (Friday) would be the best, then store our luggage at the terminal on day two (Saturday) when we disembark and then after exploring the old city on foot for the day, take a taxi to the airport.
