Just wait until everyone is off the ship.... I am guessing that 3/4 of them made the best of it and, stayed drunk, laughed, made new life long friends, enjoyed extended vacation.. The other 1/4 bitched about everything!!!! I've been on trips (even on the Triumph) with all day bitching even in good conditions....

Two interesting points from the story:

 

o "The rescue came in the early hours Tuesday morning when she walked through an open door in the lower portion of the ship and eased herself down a rope ladder, stepping into a Coast Guard skiff that was bobbing in choppy water. Her sister was supposed to accompany her, but the seas were too rough."

 

This should be a good answer to those who question why were all the passengers not taken off of the ship.

I doubt the theft was by a crew member.

Agree--they seemed to be very fair and reasonable with their comments. I have to agree, I think the lack of accurate communication and spin has made CCL look a lot worse than it could have.

 

It's actually making the entire industry look bad. I have people in my office who have not cruised and won't now after watching all of this. Carnival Corporation continues to hurt the industry with their mishaps and of course Mickey Arison could care less. He has made his millions and is set for life. He laughs while Rome burns.

That would be the worst thing to happen. Its like the President showing up at a natural disaster. It detracts from the real work that needs to get done, done.

Also a quick note about cost, logistics and effectiveness.

 

I spent many years in roles that require a lot of contingency planning. When you do that sort of thing you always end up with three lists.

 

What you WANT to do, what you SHOULD do, and what you CAN do.

 

The last one is the most important because it deals with resource allocation. Not only do you have X amount of dollars, you also have X amount of people and you have to balance all of that. You also have to take into account resources you don't control.

 

Lets look at hotels for example. Based on a little research, NOLA has a convention booking group with direct access to hotel inventory and also Carnival has contacts there. This means one or two Carnival people could easily book 1500 rooms. Mobile, from what I can find, doesn't have the same, that means each hotel must be contacted individual to obtain available room counts, sign contracts etc, which could require a lot more people, So part of the question you ask is not only a matter of cost, but could those other people be put to use in better situations, like arranging flights, contacting relatives, booking buses, arranging food, etc.

 

My point is that while cost is a factor, the incremental savings between NOLA and Mobile was probably not enough on its own to offset the cost of busing people there and then moving them again, so its logical there were other factors.

Actually that would be 90 degrees assuming I read that right. That said, while I doubt it was actually 45 degrees in reality, if you are on an upper deck of a dark disabled ship listing even 10 degrees its going to FEEL like 45.

 

If that ship rolled 45 deg, there would be serious injuries, not only from people flying across the decks, but from being struck by loose items.

Pretty safe to say it didnt happen. 30deg is a major roll on a cruise ship. Crap will be all over the place.

No. Your translation is incorrect, and you're making a false assumption. At no time in my posts on this thread have I been a Carnival cheerleader or a Carnival basher. I have not and will not question or marginalize the reports from those with loved ones on the ship. I have, however, gotten frustrated with things like the repeated insistence that the passengers should have been transferred to another vessel while at sea or towed more quickly with additional tugs even when credentialed, knowledgable posters have patiently explained the reasoning behind the decisions that have been made.

The whole hotel topic is mute. CNN is reporting the majority of the passengers want to be bussed directly to Houston/Galveston ASAP and not spend the night. It appears that what the passengers really want, and what we think they want are two different things

The passenger clearly said 45. As I noted, that's not realistic, but given conditions at the time, I can understand the exaggeration.

Since they had original said they would not bring the ship into harbor in the dark since it is under tow, where was this reported? Not that I'm questioning, I'm just wondering if the USCG/Port is making an exception and willing to attempt docking in the dark.

 

CNN is reporting the 8 pm arrival time based on picking up the pilot 30 miles out at 12:30 pm (from an overheard radio conversation between Triumph and pilot).

 

I hope whoever makes the decision to dock or not dock decides that it is safe enough to do so tonight.

Well, I am by no means a CCL cheerleader, but we on the RCCL boards are just as interested in this as ya'll are and this thread seems to be the only one still being commented upon so we're here too.

It seems to me that the cruise industry as a whole,( considering there are dozens of ships on dozens of lines departing several times each week 52 weeks out of the year), has a decent record of safety. Just because an incident gets major press and is indeed deplorable for the people involved doesn't mean that the percentage of these types of incidents are not just a fraction of safely conducted cruises.

Just as with airplane crashes, it is a very small percentage. Of course for the passies, that is no consideration, but for me, it will never deter us from cruising. I wish all of them well and will be glad they are getting home today.
