Diamond Questions

You will love the lounge.

In terms of points, would you cross the 80 point mark during your next cruise? How many points are you away at the moment?

I will be on a 7 night cruise on the Allure this month. I have 76 points right now, so I will cross over 80 points on the cruise.

On our recent cruise, my parents were at 75 points, while we were 80 on the dot. So we started the cruise as Diamonds while they were Emerald.

On the cruise, I asked the Diamond Concierge whether my parents would get upgraded for the last 2 days of the 7 night cruise. Official policy was no but he suggested that I politely put in a request to the C&A Loyalty Manager on board.

So I put a request in writing and to our pleasant surprise, my Dad got a letter and a call from the Loyalty Manager and he and Mum were upgraded to Diamond for the last two days of the cruise!

Needless to say they were very happy and certainly even more loyal to Royal now.

Thank you to everyone who replied to my question about taking a non-Diamond cabin mate to events and the lounge - sadly as my friend would not be able to accompany me (and it would have been the icing on the cake for her), maybe I will review my choice of itinerary... or on the other hand sail in a suite. Will need to look again :)

Thank you. did you ask at the beginning of the cruise or when they became "unofficially" Diamond? I will give it a try. I'm just not sure if I should ask right away or not.

I did this same thing on the first day of the cruise. He just put a sticker on my card. Not sure if it made a difference or not but I was traveling with 2diamonds and 2 d+ and I was 1 day away from d

Thanks for the list...one question - for the phone discount does that just apply to one call, or the entire cruise? $2/minute is a great discount and would make it simple to call home (we have elderly parents and are doing a transatlantic cruise).

WEll, since we have 4 nights before we will be Diamond I may just wait until we are past the 3 night point. Thanks for the feedback.

The phone coupon applies for the entire cruise.

Thanks...that sounds like a great deal. Hopefully they don't change the coupons!

You didn't mention what ship?

For ships with a Diamond Lounge, the free drinks include standard bar drinks, but not martinis, etc. Bloody Marys, booze & soda, wine, beer. I'm curious as well if anyone has gotten blended drinks or anything more adventurous.

If you ship has just a diamond event, it's free wine & beer, with 25% off anything else.

We were treated to "free" martini's on the Allure back in February 2013:)

I phoned RCCL and spoke to one of their agents....they advised that the discount is $2/min....so only 25% discount.

Sounded too good to be true.

If its happy hour that interests you - you both could purchase one of the new 'drink' packages. Or change to a Celebrity ship where cabin mates are allowed.

If you call again you will probably get a different answer. The coupon in the Diamond/Diamond Plus/ Pinnacle book IS $2 per minute, a 75% discount.

It is not the happy hour as such; it is being able to make my friend's first cruise just a little bit more special. I have travelled a lot with her and she really enjoys the little "extras" I have like Business lounge access and the odd upgrade on a flight. Celebrity would be great but their itineraries are a lot longer than some of the shorter 5 or so night Radiance/Rhapsody ones out of Sydney. As I am gifting the cruise to her, I also do not want to be over the top.

Well, you see, this is sort of the point.

This IS her first cruise. She hasn't earned any perks yet. If other organizations allow sharing, that's fine, but Royal Caribbean and its C&A status is not one of them.

I agree with your comment - I simply asked the question as on X as an elite she would be able to accompany me. I asked to find out what RCI's rules are - and now I know. Not whinging or complaining about the answer, just asked a straightforward question.

My last reply was in response to a post that perhaps made it sound that all I was interested in was the free drinks at a happy hour - not the case at all.

Just politely ask the concierge the first evening. S/he will either tell you to bring your friend in, or regretfully turn her away.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. ;)

Thanks M_M - if we book the cruise we are considering I will ask and take the answer given in good grace.

I asked midway.

Our cruise was a 7 nighter. I asked on Day 3 or 4.

I wanted to look for the C&A Loyalty Manager but she was constantly swamped and dealing with other customers.

So I wrote her a note (using paper and envelope I got from the Diamond Concierge) and slipped it under the door.

In my note, I politely asked if my parents could be upgraded to Diamond for the last 2 days of the cruise, because they would have hit 80 points on Day 5 of the cruise. I said that I was aware of the official policy, but asked whether an exception could be made, as this gesture would certainly make my parents very happy.

Yes. I have found that the LA is usually swamped, not available for casual drop-ins. We won't be booking a cruise since our 2014 cruise is already booked, so no need to make an appointment. Did she send the stickers for the Sea Pass to your parent's room?

You should put Skype on your laptop and your parent's computer and use the internet. It is cheaper than the telephone.

Yes. She sent the stickers and the Diamond Booklets to their room. Also gave them a call. :)

My parents didn't know that I was doing this. So they were very much caught by surprise.

Subsequently, both of us went to personally thank her, and also purchase the open future cruise certficate.
