Smoke smell

To this day, the only thing that REALLY bugs me BIGTIME about HAL is their pandering to smokers! There! I've said it!

Nobody (okay, ALMOST nobody) smokes anymore, so why does HAL keep playing footsie with the people who stink up the ship with smoke???

UGH!!!:eek::(:mad:

I totally agree with you, dont they realize how many people they are missing out on going to the casino.

Effective January 4th 2013:

For the comfort of all of our guests, all staterooms (cabins), showrooms and all other indoor areas are designated non-smoking with the exception of:

  • Casino (Active players only)
  • Northern Lights Disco (ms Oosterdam, ms Noordam, ms Westerdam & ms Zuiderdam only)
  • Seaview Bar (except that smoking is not permitted in the Seaview Bar on the ms Maasdam, ms Ryndam or ms Statendam)
  • Sports Bar
  • Crow's Nest (except that smoking is not permitted in the Crow’s Nest on the ms Eurodam, ms Oosterdam, ms Noordam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Westerdam or ms Zuiderdam)

Joanie

This is sad to read. I thought I had read sometime ago that smoking was going to be banned in all of the Crows Nest lounges. This was very exciting to hear, but now I see that is not the case. :(

We would have happily left HAL some $$$ at the poker tables on the Westerdam, but the smoke was so bad, we stayed far away. We could smell it down in the Queens Lounge, which was non-smoking. I wondered at the time how much $$ HAL loses by running off the non-smokers.

I don't remember where I read it, and I can't site a source, but I remember reading about a study that examined risky behavior, and they found smokers tend to take more risks in life, anywhere from high risk sports to gambling. Maybe, statistically, the smaller number of smokers are more likely to leave larger sums of money at the casino.

You say "Nobody (okay, ALMOST nobody) smokes anymore". If that is the case who are the smokers that HAL is pandering to?

I am always reading how much smoke there is on the ship and that hardly anyone smokes

By the way I am a non-smoker (or rather an ex-smoker) and I don't like it but these two conflicting statements confuse me.

You can also smoke in the Northern Lights and if a ship has one, the Oak Room (Even I cannot take the stench in the Oak Room!!).

Joanie

The only ship that has an Oak Room is Noordam and there is some question whether they will be removing it at her upcoming dry dock. The last I read, it was going to remain in place but there is some uncertainty about it.

There is an Oak Room on the Prinsendam and smoking is NOT allowed (at least it wasn't when I was on) It is a venue to relax in - not to smoke

I had one experience smelling smoke on our last cruise that I can only describe as lovely.:)

Please know I abhor smoking because it devastates health.

However on our last cruise (Alaska) I was sitting on our balcony when suddenly there was the most delicious smell of pipe tobacco. Just a whiff.. gone almost as quickly as it came. Clearly the smoker choose a wonderful blend of tobacco.

My eyes welled up ...my Father smoked a pipe and the memories flooded in ...I actually found myself thinking...wait don't go.:)

For what it's worth - there was no smoking on the Prinsendam in the Crow's Nest last year when we were on. I think the ban may be in effect and the page just not updated? I don't recall smoking in the Crow's Nest on the Maasdam when we were on either but I didn't spend as much time there on that ship as I did on the Prinsendam;)

We have just paid our deposit for our cruise from Los Angeles to Sydney on the Volendam. After seeing the list of where smokers are allowed to smoke in side, as non smokers I am worried how the ship will smell, will it be that bad that we wont be able to even go in the casino etc because of the smoke. Can any non smoker please tell me what it is like, do they have good ventalation in those areas.

Did you not think to check before paying a deposit:rolleyes:

Thanks for that information, Jacqui. I had been thinking the Oak Room would be a lovely place for reading on sea days on the Prinsendam. This thread had me discounting that idea. I know your information is current so now I am back to thinking Oak Room for reading and relaxing.

The Oak Room on the Noordam is, indeed, non-smoking now. Last month it was being used for small gatherings (like in a Hudson Room) or for a quiet reading space. Onboard staff confirmed the deck space just outside that room will be taken away for the new cabins ... but we didn't get a straight answer as to the Oak Room itself. I got the impression a final decision had not yet been made.

It is a gorgeous spot Sapper1, very comfy chairs. I sent some pics of it and other rooms to Joanie and they are on her website if you care to look (assuming you haven't already):D The Crow's Nest is also a great spot for reading and relaxing:)

On our Eurodam cruise a few weeks ago I though the casino was less smoky than on previous cruises. Can you still smell smoke? Yes, but it is a lot better now.

I never smelled smoke on our balcony (4166 towards the stern). Maybe we were just lucky but I have not had any serious smoke issues on the balcony either.

On previous cruises there were times when I could smell smoke in the corridors due to people smoking in their cabins - this time I did not smell anything.

So, it has gotten better overall, in my opinion.

This is from HAL web site today -- Crow's Nest is not a smoking area.

----------------------------------------------------------

For the comfort of all of our guests, all staterooms (cabins), showrooms and most other indoor areas are designated non-smoking. While smoking is not permitted in staterooms, guests are allowed to smoke on stateroom verandahs. Smoking is also permitted on certain other designated, outside decks. The designated smoking areas for all ships are as follows unless otherwise noted.

■Stateroom verandahs

■Casino (Active players only)

■Seaview Bar

■Outside Decks

■Sports Deck

■Observation Deck (ms Prinsendam, ms Eurodam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Noordam, ms Oosterdam, ms Westerdam, and ms Zuiderdam only)

Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed and on stateroom verandahs. Electronic cigarettes are permitted in staterooms but not in other public areas of the ship other than on outside decks designated as smoking areas.

Any guest who smokes inside staterooms in violation of our policy will be charged a $250 cleaning fee per day of violation.

The policy is effective for all ships as of January 4, 2013 with the exception of the ms Amsterdam which becomes effective on 5/1/2013 and the ms Prinsendam which becomes effective on 5/17/13.

Only players in the casino may smoke. I saw people playing penny machines for ONE cent a spin just so they could smoke. I guess thats a good idea if you smoke and don't wish to donate much.

Are the penny slots on Hal that old. :(I haven't seen any penny machines where you can bet just one cent in years. Most all now have a minimum of 30 cents per spin and most are even more.

Is smoking still allowed in the loungers at the Seaview Pool? Is it considered the same or separate from the Seaview Bar?

That is where we are often aggravated--when you are enjoying a sea day and someone next to you lights up. Has this changed Jan 1?

No, that has changed. The bar itself is for smoking, as are a number of tables aft of it. The area is clearly marked and the end of it is well before the area of the loungers.

No smoking in Crows Nest.

I hope this is correct. My daughter will be on the Volendam and I had told her how great the Crow's Nest was for inside viewing in AK, especially with it being non-smoking now. However, from Joanie's Post it sounded like smoking was allowed in the Crow's Nest on the Volendam. I hope it is across the board non-smoking in the Crow's Nest. That would be wonderful.

My DH and I are not gamblers, but we would drop a few dollars tin the casino if it was non-smoking. With my asthma I just can't handle it. I imagine they monitor this situation and try to figure out who will bring them the most dollars. I am okay with it. Saves us some money, most likely. ;)

In my experience, even on the ships where smoking has been allowed in a small area in the Crow's Nest, it has been banned during scenic cruising in Alaska. If you are worried, get your info direct from HAL.

I've done Alaska a couple of times on the Volendam and you're right, the Crow's Next is great for inside viewing, especially early morning heading into Glacier Bay.:)

You'll find that the Prinsendam Oak Room is a very small room, with few chairs. Last time I sailed her, the Travel Guide also had his desk hours in there. So, don't count on being able to read in there.

But about three steps away is a very large library/Internet Center with many comfortable chairs. That room is perfect for curling up with a good book.

Not really worried. I go with the flow, and I am sure my DD will do the same. On my two cruises I only had to leave the Crow's Nest once. Not bad for 21 days of cruising. I would only be upset if smoking was not allowed and there was no enforcement when people lit up. If it is allowed, I don't have any issues since people are not violating any policies. Not that I wouldn't like a different policy, but like I said, if rules are followed, all is good with me.
