Hong Kong Airport to Ocean Terminal

We are going to Cruise out of Hong Kong in April and will be taking a taxi from the Airport to the cruise terminal. Do the taxi drivers accept US$ and how easy or hard is it to get a taxi at the airport? We know we should take a metered taxi but we have read that there are no lines but a mob to get a cab. Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Has anyone had experience with tour-Beijing.com, we plan to have a pickup at the end of the cruise and a tour of Shanghai with airport drop off using this travel service, they are licensed by the government. We have cruised 10 times in the past, mostly abroad, so we are not new to cruise terminals or ports etc. Many thanks.

If it is April 2013 and you are on the Millennium there is a very long roll call for this cruise at:

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1429348 Read post #4890 on this roll call for great information on getting from the airport to hotels. We will be opting for the airport express train as it is fast easy and inexpensive and we have done this before.

Would a US cab driver accept Hong Kong dollars??

You may be lucky, but why not use the currency of the country you will be in..;)

I think you will find they are very well organised in Hong Kong with their transport options.

As YVR cruiser said, come over to the roll call.

( don't forget your visas) :D

Taxis in Hong Kong are all RED very efficient and CHEAP .

You will need Hong Kong $ to pay for the taxi. Why would you expect a HK taxi driver to accept US $ . Just change some US $ for HK $ at the wonderful HK Airport on arrival .

Hong Kong Airport is very well organized and there will be plenty of taxis at all hours .

Thank you to YVR Cruiser, jannandJohn, and Kuldalai for their informative replies. Now we are more relaxed about taking a taxi from the airport to the cruise terminal and we know too to get Hong Kong $ first.

My advice is to take the high speed inexpensive rail link from the airport to the Kowloon station and taxi from there. This train is dedicated to the airport, leaves from the terminal and will save time and money.

My advice is if you're by yourself and want to save some money, then do the train to Kowloon station and then taxi to Ocean Terminal; but if you have 2 people, then just take a taxi from the airport to Ocean Terminal. IMO, the difference in cost is immaterial.

BTW: As soon as you walk out the door from HK Customs/Immigration into the terminal area there are a bank of ATMs along the wall from HSBC or Bank of China. Bathrooms are nearby too.;)

Which ever way you choose there are multi-lingual signs pointing you to your ride.

Have a nice trip:)

Thanks Philob and Friend100, good advice and I will follow. Two of us, so the taxi is the way we will go. Always need those restrooms and of course we will have to use the ATM.

I just got back from Hong Kong which is where our Millennium cruise ended. We stayed two nights in Kowloon and took a taxi to the airport (our flight was early and we neededto leave before the MTR started). First of all, taxis are cheap in Hong Kong. Make sure you get in a Red Taxi as those serve all of Hong Kong. The green taxis are for Lantau Island only (which is where the airport is). You can easily exchange money at the airport. You could do the airport express on the MTr to Kowloon and grab a cab from there. Any of this would be easy. The public transport in Hong Kong (cabs, MTR, etc) is great and easy to use and understand. Have fun!

When you get to the taxi ramp, the taxi conductor will give you a card with telephone numbers. On the card, he will write down the taxi number. If you have any complaints about the service, there is a number on the card that you can ring.;)

Just curious, how much was the taxi from the airport to Kowloon?

The MTR aiport express is about $13.00 USD one way PP , so with 2 people thats about $26.00 USD or about 175.00 HKD is the one way taxi fare to Kowloon in that ball park ?

Check this out:

Airport Express is about 25-30 minutes; taxi without traffic can take 45+.

Thanks for the exact link.

A bit longer, but ... Looks like the difference for 2 people in taxi is less than 50.00 HKD more than the APX, and of course that includes the hassle factor in not having to take the shuttle bus at Kowloon station

Interesting....

If you have to take the shuttle bus from Kowloon station after getting there, the overall journey time is very likely to be longer than if you just take a taxi.

Taxis in HK are NOT all red. There are different colors indicating their "zone", for lack of a better term. Red is most common, but not the only.

Make sure the taxi driver knows you are going to the Ocean Terminal for overseas cruise ships. Ours said he knew, but he dropped us at the ferry terminal , sort of next door , and it was a long walk, schleping luggage , to the cruise terminal, even though it was all in the one building, or shopping centre.
