Just thought some of you would be interested in Royal Caribbean's new smoking policy. Quote from Royal Caribbean's web site obtained through Chrome. Royal Caribbean updated the smoking policy July 2013 and the above policy is in enforcement on all ships with cruises departing on or after January 1, 2014.

Smoking is not permitted inside any stateroom and any stateroom balcony.

I looked over on the Royal Caribbean forum and they reported that the updated link doesn't work on everyone's computer so here it is, the NEW rules regarding RCI's smoking policy. I for one am sooooo happy about this news! Our kids are in their early 20s and they love RCI and we love going on cruises with them so this gives us nice options!

Q: What is the Smoking Policy onboard?

A: For the comfort and enjoyment of our guests, our ships are designated as non-smoking; however, we recognize that some of our guests do smoke. Therefore, to provide an onboard environment that also satisfies smokers, we have designated certain areas of the ship as smoking areas.

Cigarette, cigar, e-cigarette and pipe smoking is permitted in designated outdoor areas of the starboard side of all ships; with the exception of Oasis-class ships that will allow smoking on the port side of the ships. To assist in locating areas where smoking is permitted, guests will find visible signage posted within all smoking areas and ashtrays that are provided for use. Outdoor areas near restricted areas, food venues, and kids play areas and pools will not allow smoking. On Oasisclass, smoking is not permitted in Central Park or the Boardwalk neighborhoods.

Casino Royale allows smoking and has a designated area for non-smoking guests. There will be visible signage indicating the non-smoking area in the casino. There are select cruises departing from China that will not have a non-smoking area in the casino.

Onboard all interior public spaces are smoke free*. Smoking is not permitted in any dining venue, theater, bar, lounge, hallway, elevator, and jogging track.

Smoking is not permitted inside any stateroom and any stateroom balcony. This applies to all stateroom categories onboard. If a guest is in violation of this stateroom policy, a cleaning fee of $250 USD will be applied to their SeaPass® account and may be subject to further action pursuant to the "Consequences Section" of the Guest Conduct Policy.

Cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco must be properly disposed of and never thrown overboard. Cigar and pipe tobacco is limited to designated outdoor areas and Cigar Bars**. You must be at least 18 years of age to purchase, possess or use tobacco onboard.

Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes are only permitted within the designated smoking areas.

Royal Caribbean International kindly asks all guests to please observe the smoking policy. These requests are made to provide a comfortable cruise for everyone. Guest may also inquire at Guest Services for the location of the designated smoking areas onboard.

Guests who violate this smoking policy may be subject to further action pursuant to the "Consequences Section" of this Guest Conduct Policy.

*Mariner of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas offer one indoor smoking venue. Onboard Mariner of the Seas guest can smoke at the Connoisseur Club located on Deck 5. Onboard Voyager of the Seas guest can smoke at The Vault, nightclub, located on Deck 3.

**Cigar Bars on Royal Caribbean International are called the Connoisseur Club and are featured on the Freedom Class and Voyager Class ships.

Thank you Dierdre, I was about to post the policy myself since as I mentioned before, not everyone is accessing the link. By the way, great news.

And so you're still gonna' smell the smoke in the casino. If you're hanging out in the non-smoking area you'll smell it. Or walking through -

And they allow smoking in the entire casino on China departures.

Not going to be sailing anything but X and Azamara until the other lines go non smoking for real. Sure it's a step in the right direction. Keep taking steps RC.

Definitely a move in the right direction; RCI had a very 20th Century policy. IMHO they need to take it a step further though and ban indoor smoking before I would consider sailing with them again.

I have a RCI transatlantic booked for fall 2014. I never even consider that there will be anywhere indoors where smoking will be allowed. I cannot remember the last time I was somewhere where smoking is allowed. I believe it has been at least 10 years.

Do any Americans live where smoking is allowed indoors? Las Vegas Maybe?

To get to my point I will likely cancel my cruise on RCI because I hate the smell of cancer sticks. Especially when it gets in my clothing.

It is not just RCI. The cruise industry is stuck in the 20th century.:(

Is the Casino outdoors? How can both of those statements be true?

Awesome, big step in the right direction! I just wish they would be more vigilant about ensuring people know the policy... I have been paying more to cruise Celebrity to avoid smelling smoke on my balcony and this year first thing I smell when I walk out on the balcony is cigarette smoke:mad: I reported it and they for the most part took care of it.

I will definitely be giving Royal Caribbean some more business!

For RCI it's all about $$$$$$. They will lose too much money if they do not allow smoking in the casino.

don't be so sure. plenty of people would be willing to spend more money in the Casino if it goes smoke free.

all those bar and restaurant owners that cried fowl ended up eating their words when it turned out that not only did they not lose any revenue, they GAINED it because patrons who would not normally have come due to the smoking polices started taking up all the seats the smokers vacated. and they had more money to spend as they were not otherwise spending it on cigarettes or health care costs.

A few people claim this as a "Fact" but the casino on "X" is packed on the cruises I've been on.

Where did you see that smoke free casinos on cruise ships , which BTW are full of mainly non-smokers, don't do well?:cool:

If losing revenue was not an issue then one has to assume that RCI would have followed X on this policy. By the way, on our Reflection cruise in March the casino was much slower than any RCI ship I have cruised.

Forgive me.....I'm a little confused by your post. You'll likely cancel your RCI cruise because you don't like the smell? Why book in the first place?

For what it's worth, I rarely ever have a problem with smoke inside. The casino can get smoky, but almost most indoor venues are smoke free.
