Scarlet and grey Posted December 14, 2013 #1 Share Posted December 14, 2013 After our cruise in October, disembarking in Civitavecchia, we are thinking of catching the rail or a short flight somewhere. Any suggestions? Only would spend 2 days (sat, sun).
euro cruiser Posted December 14, 2013 #2 Share Posted December 14, 2013 Rome! It's about an hour from Civitavecchia by train.
Rare cruisemom42 Posted December 14, 2013 #3 Share Posted December 14, 2013 Yes, why not spend the time in Rome?
Scarlet and grey Posted December 14, 2013 Author #4 Share Posted December 14, 2013 We will spending time Rome before the cruise. We have also been there before.
Rare cruisemom42 Posted December 14, 2013 #5 Share Posted December 14, 2013 If you're willing to fly, you could go just about anywhere -- we don't know where you've been before or what you are interested in. Paris might be a good choice. If you want to go by rail, it's easy to get to Tuscany. Amalfi Coast area is also nice but perhaps less of a draw if it is getting toward late October. But you'd also have to think of being not too far from a major airport or less you're going to spend a lot of your 2 days getting there and getting to an airport to fly out. Excellent points...without knowing where you have been, what interests you, what your budget is...hard to give a recommendation. But given your thoughts, any part of Italy is easily reachable. slidergirl Posted December 14, 2013 #7 Share Posted December 14, 2013 You have a plethora of choices!!! Flights and trains will get you anywhere (well, almost - you might have to take a bus/car for some). What other places in Europe that aren't near ports have you always wanted to see? There are so many places just in Italy that I'd be willing to have just two days to visit - Bologna, Torino, Milano, Cinque Terre, Lake Como, Lake Maggiore, Lucca, the Dolomites… my list goes on. Outside of Italy, geez, again, so many - Paris (I can not go to Paris too many times), Vienna, Munich, Dresden, Prague, Amsterdam… If some of the places are near major international hubs, you could probably do some good pricing on multi-city air tickets for the big round trip, then look at any of the European airlines or trains to get you there... Girr Posted December 14, 2013 #8 Share Posted December 14, 2013 Also, where are you flying out of? If you have an early morning flight out of FCO, you'll need to be back the evening before--you might not have two full days.
Scarlet and grey Posted December 14, 2013 Author #9 Share Posted December 14, 2013 Thanks for the suggestions. I think we will fly to Paris from FCO before returning to the states. Easy and plentiful flights...and cheap!
euro cruiser Posted December 14, 2013 #10 Share Posted December 14, 2013 If you'll be using one of the low cost European airlines for the hop from FCO to Paris, take a minute to understand the baggage limits and fees. The weight limit is usually stricter than for a transatlantic flight and the fees can be hefty, so it's good to know the limitations and plan for them. So make a dummy booking to see how add-ons affect the bottom line. And fares are usually flexible, and can increase spectacularly close to the date. So check the prices for YOUR dates, and book flights soonest - before committing to other costs such as hotels. Or, subject to the open-jaw prices & availability of trans-Atlantic flights, consider a one-way car rental from Civi to Naples, stopping off at Monte Cassino on the way & with a hotel on the Amalfi coast, somewhere like Ravello. Though Paris isn't a bad idea. ;) JB :) Edited December 15, 2013 by John Bull
LPYRCRUISER Posted December 18, 2013 #14 Share Posted December 18, 2013 When we booked our cruise, my biggest disappointment was it didn't go to Venice. We are sailing out of Rome, spending two days there before boarding the ship. We decided to travel to Venice, spend two days there and then fly home. We probably will take the train, but, if we can find a cheap flight, may do that
numbersix Posted December 19, 2013 #15 Share Posted December 19, 2013 How about Barcelona? We just disembaked the Rotterdam in Civitavecchia on Dec 11th, spent a couple of days in Rome (have been many times before), and then flew to Barcelona for 3 days. We had a very reasonable flight through Iberia (94 euro @). Stayed at the Hotel Colon opposite the Cathedral in the Barri Gotic...we had a great time! Good luck and good travels, whatever you do! Scarlet and grey Posted December 19, 2013 Author #16 Share Posted December 19, 2013 Great suggestion for venice and Barcelona, however we visited both this year on our western Mediterranean cruise. Loved them both very much!!! Still think Paris, looking into flights currently. Lots of great suggestions!
