sailandcruise Posted January 5, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 5, 2014 On a recent cruise, I observed smokers on the promenade throw their cigarette butts overboard. Obviously, this is a fire hazard. Should I have reported it to security? Said something to them? Ignored their behavior and hoped that it was caught on a security camera? Has this happened to others on this board? What did you do? Watson's aunt Posted January 5, 2014 #2 Share Posted January 5, 2014 Hi I never understood this. startwin Posted January 5, 2014 #3 Share Posted January 5, 2014 I think you should have reported it to the front desk. But, sad to say nothing would likely have been done. I was once in Glacier Bay - which is pristine, and smoking on the ship is usually banned that day. But I happened around a corner on the Lower Promenade and witnessed someone tossing a butt overboard. I was horrified, given where we were, and I did report it. It was met with something of shrug. Perhaps another staff member would have taken it more seriously, though.
ithaca gal Posted January 5, 2014 #4 Share Posted January 5, 2014 I would have reported them. If no action was taken, then there is nothing else to do, but at least I would have felt that I did something about it.
PatsyAnne Posted January 5, 2014 #5 Share Posted January 5, 2014 Wasn't there a fire a few years ago caused by a cigarette that blew down on another deck? I don't remember the details, but I'm pretty sure that was it and that it wasn't HAL. Senior hour! I know what I think you should have done... let them know it was a danger and pointed out where they could put them (ashtray). But I don't know that I would have had the courage to tell them.
RuthC Posted January 5, 2014 #6 Share Posted January 5, 2014 This is something that can be serious, so I might ("might", mind you) have said something directly to the person. If I were thinking, I would try not to hit the roof and yell, but rather explain why tossing butts overboard can be dangerous, and where the ashtrays are. Reporting it to the Front Desk, or someone in authority, won't do any good. Even if someone were to head right out, the person would likely be gone by then. If an officer were standing nearby, I would say something to him/her.

Toad Posted January 5, 2014 #8 Share Posted January 5, 2014 I would have approached the offenders, told them I was going to report them on CC and let them know that they would be the focus of yet another incendiary smoking thread!
Typhoon1 Posted January 5, 2014 #9 Share Posted January 5, 2014 Reported it to the front desk ASAP. Endangering thousands of passengers is a very serious matter.
Thebes Posted January 5, 2014 #10 Share Posted January 5, 2014 I hope HAL is reading this and is considering no smoking policy esp when a serious matter like this becomes a subject of jokes to some smokers around here.
Krazy Kruizers Posted January 5, 2014 #11 Share Posted January 5, 2014 I am not certain what I would do. We have witness people move the ash trays by the aft deck from starboard side to port side -- thus smoking was going on everywhere on the aft deck. There were several workers out there and not one of them said anything to these people.
nlsoftly Posted January 5, 2014 #12 Share Posted January 5, 2014 I'm a smoker. And I have watched and reported dangerous idiots. In fact, standing smoking talking with them allowed me to report them by name.
trixiee Posted January 5, 2014 #13 Share Posted January 5, 2014 I would have asked them if they recalled the Star Princess fire, and asked them to tell me how the fire started. Talking to someone doesn't have to be confrontational. :)

Should I have reported it to security? Said something to them? Ignored their behavior and hoped that it was caught on a security camera? Has this happened to others on this board? What did you do? What a truly ignorant & disrespectful thing to do! Weren't there enough ash/butt pots hanging on the rails for them to use? Perhaps it would have been too much of an effort to walk to one? I would have reported it immediately to the Front Desk, who, in turn, (presumeably), would have reported it to both security as well as the Beverage Manager, who I was told by someone at the Front Desk on a past cruise, is the officer in charge of the Promenade Deck!
PatsyAnne Posted January 5, 2014 #15 Share Posted January 5, 2014 There was a bad fire on the Star Princess back in 2006 that was caused by a "smoldering cigarette": http://www.nbcnews.com/id/11975460/ Thanks! That's the one I was thinking of. I live in a "flammable" area and I'd like to believe that people who aren't careful with fire just don't understand the risks. Rare TracieABD Posted January 5, 2014 #16 Share Posted January 5, 2014 Fire is the enemy of cruise ships. There is a reason they do not allow candles and open flames. I would have reported it, so they could (using physics) estimated the trajectory... just in case.

sail7seas Posted January 5, 2014 #19 Share Posted January 5, 2014 I don't doubt for one minute I would have torn into anyone I saw tossing a lit cigarette overboard. All our lives are at risk from such an action. I couldn't care less if I embarrassed them or angered them or whatever.......... we are talking major fire risk when a lit cigarette is tossed. Moron!!!!!!!!!! Fouremco Posted January 5, 2014 #21 Share Posted January 5, 2014 I would have spoken to them in a non-confrontational manner to explain the potential danger. While it may seem common sense to experienced cruisers and CC members, it may be less so to others. Let's face it, there are still drivers who flick their butts out the car front window and are surprised when they reenter the car through the back window! If the smokers seem genuinely contrite I'd let it go, but if there was any "attitude" displayed I'd definitely report them.

I don't mean to be argumentative with you but what would you report? Some man or woman whose name or cabin number you don't know tossed a cigarette 15 minutes ago? hal lover Posted January 5, 2014 #23 Share Posted January 5, 2014 I know what they are doing is wrong. But be careful with that confrontation. People these days are "NUTS"! Hopefully you can find someone in authority on the ship close by and let them handle it. Just sayin'.....
Linda&Vern Posted January 5, 2014 #24 Share Posted January 5, 2014 I still don't understand why someone was smoking on the Promenade deck. It is not listed as a smoking area ... yet reports of people smoking there continue on all ships. On the Westerdam in March we had a cigar smoker puffing away DURING THE LIFEBOAT DRILL. No crew said a word, yet HAL's current smoking policy says you can only smoke in areas below: Stateroom verandahs Casino (Active players only) Seaview Bar Outside Decks Sports Deck Observation Deck (ms Prinsendam, ms Eurodam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Noordam, ms Oosterdam, ms Westerdam, and ms Zuiderdam only)
