soda/water count as luggage?

NCL doesn't enforce any baggage rules. We carry on two 12 packs of soda. Then we might replenish at port stops. Some ports will accept the soft drink packs as luggage, others will not. What ever you hand carry on will need to go through the security scanner, similar to an airport.

no limit on luggage

Bottled water might trigger the booze police. Maybe, maybe not. In the end, which is better, the ships water or bottled water?

You can also carry water/soda onboard in your carryon to avoid any hassle.

You can take as many pieces of luggage as you can stand to fill out the tags for. We have often taken 12 packs of soda and a beach umbrella, and they're delivered to the door without a problem.

A sealed case of bottled water won't be a problem. I suppose one that reeked of vodka might be a problem :D

We ALWAYS put our case of water and two 6 packs of soda soda in our checked luggage. It is NOT a hassle nor has it EVER triggered the "booze police".

Maybe it is because we do NOT smuggle!

We usually purchase a bar set up and at least one bottle of wine for our cabin so it is there when we arrive. This does not stop DH from purchasing several buckets of beer during the week and I usually end up purchasing a few drinks of the day or another bottle or two of wine.

The soda is for the bar setup, since it only comes with 6 cans, and sometimes to settle our stomach, not so much from the rough sea, but more from over eating .

The case of sport bottled water is for drinking in our cabin or while in port. Very seldom do I carry it around on the ship.

At meals we drink the ships water (in addition to our beer and wine).

We also spend a lot of time in the casino :D

Wow - that was a big statement. So, if people smuggle, then doing the same thing with bottles will cause a problem?

Not sure what you are trying to say.

At the risk of sounding completely stupid here, first I laughed at "booze police", then had to look up the commented "smuggling" & then I laughed some more! To each their own but that all sounds like ALOT of trouble to go to in hopes of getting away with something.

Anyhow, thanks for the answers. I'm a big water drinker (my hubby says I drink enough water to drown a fish ;-) so just wanted to check guidelines on how much I can bring & if I had to count it as luggage.

Have a good day all

Something to consider....the ships' water is as good or better than bottled water. Many guests just take a couple of bottles and refill them.

How is the ship's water just as good as bottled water? Like a poster above said, I drink enough water to drown a fish so good quality water means a lot to me! I would strongly prefer not to bring a case of water with me if I don't have to.

I'm not a water purification expert. However, the ships' purification and distillation process is known to create extremely pure water. I believe everyone agrees it is crystal clear, without any taste or odor. The info sheet from the Pearl says that the fresh water is produced on board through the process of evaporation and reverse osmosis. It says that they can produce 396,300 gals of fresh water a day.

In cabins, absolutely not. The water on all NCL ships we've sailed on has had definitive chlorine taste when taken from cabin tap.

In bars and restaurants, yes (because of carbon filtering there).

I am also a BIG water drinker. My DH gets mad when I want to bring on 2 cases, we drink what we bring, then have room for any items we may have purchased. :)

Carrying it on, seems like a hassle to me, that's why we put it in a suitcase. Have seen cases of water outside cabin doors with a luggage tag taped to it.

Enjoy your cruise!

Quick question for those that check soda- Doesn't it explode when you open it due to jostling? I'd like to bring some Diet Coke onboard but I'd hate for it to go flat. Thanks! :)

Just don't open it right away when you get settled in your cabin.

And it helps to put it the mini fridge for awhile.

Now if in doubt if NCL or other cruise line has put your beverages thru a

centrifuge - take the yet to be open bottle/can into the bathroom and grab

a towel or wash cloth and open it over the sink or shower basin.

Temperature make a big difference - cold beverages are not as apt to explode

as are ones at room or outside temperature.

And one thing further Diet Coke is one of the most effervescent beverages

you can select for the exploding experiment. Definitely ice this one down

before attempting to pop the top - have your cabin steward bring you an

extra bucket of ice. Put the cans in the ice for awhile before serving.

When on an airplane smart flight attendants ice the Diet Coke as soon as

possible before boarding to reduce waiting time for all the fizz to fizzle out.

New Orleans, December2013. I put 2 cases of bottled water and 4 six packs of bottled soda in a rolling duffle bag. I put a luggage tag on it and sent it with our other luggage. We had 8 bags total. No problems! There was 1 bottle each missing. I guess they checked for alcohol. After the cruise we used that bag to bring back our purchases.

  • 3 weeks later...

This is all really helpful. We are on the Star to the MR in April, and I was wondering how best to pack the soda and water for our sons. I think the checked rolling duffel makes much more sense than schlepping it along as a carry on until we can stow it in the cabin.

Thanks!

That's what a lot of people said, so I tried that on my 1st cruise.

The ships water was terrible. It was ok, not great but at least drinkable, when you got a fresh glass in the dining room or buffet. The water in the room was worse, tasted old/stale, worse than any tap water I've ever drank.

We tried refilling the few bottles we brought, even in the buffet (had to fill a cup and then pore it into the bottle at the table as they didn't allow filling the bottles directly). After the water sat in the bottles for a few hours, it was as bad as the room water. Ended up having to buy a couple packs of expensive bottled water from the ship.

I usually drink 2 sports bottles of water during the day, and the equivelence of at least 2 more for dinner/night. Might need to bring 2 cases to last all of us for the week.

Does bringing soda or water count as luggage? How many pieces of luggage per person is allowed? We're sailing in March on The Getaway & am trying to decide if bringing some soda for the teenagers is worth it & how much can be brought?

No limits.

I pack a carry on bag filled with my caffeine free diet coke, water, and some low cal juice or vitamin water with the small sized bottles that fit nicely in the little refrigerators. It costs the extra $35 to check the bag on the flight heading out but I then have that bag to fill on the way home with souvenirs.

We carry it on the ship and then also carry it on the plane on the way home so it is worth it to me to have my own items in the frig and not have to purchase soda on the ship. Especially after NCL switched to Pepsi products. ;)

Thank you so much for all of this info. :D I guess whenever I think about attaching a luggage tag to anything and handing it to a stranger my mind harkens back to a time long, long ago and a commercial featuring a gorilla jumping up and down on a piece of Samsonite. I'll try to relax and point the can away from my face. (The chilled can, that is).

Kris2cruise,

If you are sailing NCL out of Tampa, any water or soda you bring on board is required to be carried on (use a rolling duffle or suitcase). If you put it in your checked luggage, it will be taken.

Hi, does anyone know the rules for the Port of Miami? Thank you in advance.

Some checked sodas do explode. My last BA cruise I checked a case of water and when it was delivered to my room the case was all sticky from someone's soda exploding onto it.
