Just back from Summit - pos/neg

Just returned from a good week onboard the Summit. We stayed in a Royal Suite and overall, the ship was better than expected, especially for her age.

I have a few quick thoughts on our experiences. We were a family of 6 (10/13 year old kids and in-laws) in Royal Suite connecting to Concierge cabin.

Negatives:

Mildew in shower of suite cabin. Peeling paint on deck of suite. Don't believe cabin was vacuumed all week - had to request sand in closet be vacuumed. Butler a bit stand-offish.

Nothing for families to do together on board. We played shuffleboard and then cards in our room a lot. No one showed for trivia 2 days except us!

Wine Cellars and Aqua Spa Cafe deserted most of the week.

Canyon Ranch not available first 2 days, then no push to bring customers to see this great, new product - no specials, no sample treatments in lobby/public areas to entice us to go.

Way too hot in fitness center. No fans on or near treadmills and they are situated right in the sun.

Positives:

Loved the non-smoking ship (only a few designated smoking areas)

Casino staff very nice.

Loved comedian and magician as well as Will Forter (sp?) and band 5 O'Clock Somewhere.

Captain Leonardo was funny, friendly and interacted with guests better than any other captain we've had.

Main dining room staff were great.

Food in Oceanview cafe (buffet) better than expected.

Liked dinner at Qsine but wouldn't have paid $45 per person for our group of 6 (had free suite dinner for 4 of us).

Drink package was great. Didn't feel "nickel and dimed" like on other cruises.

Overall, we would definitely consider another Celebrity cruise!

Thanks for your insights. Maybe the changes in the activity staff will add some new activities that your family could enjoy if you cruise with Celebrity again.

Surprised to hear that no one showed up for trivia for two days except for your family, since everyone on here says that it is always highly participated in.

I hope Canyon Ranch does have specials. I wish anyone who has cruised on one of the other lines they are on, could tell us if they do have specials on those ships.

Whe we wereon the Summit a few years ago after the refurb many things didn't appear to be refurbed, there were many areas that seen better days. Some were I our cabin Taht was changed from CC to AQ.

As for the games we went to the shell of fortune to see what it was. People were yelling out the answer with no or one letter being revealed. It was no fun so we left and never attended any games since. I can see why Celebrity is eliminating the activities staff. I don't know where the games originate from but they need to change answers.

Thanks for sharing your opinion. Am sad to read that I am not the only one disappointed on the condition of that nice ship and that it hasn't improved becasue the officers and crew for the most part are fantastic.

Thanks for your review.

Did you talk to anyone about the mildew in your shower? Was it cleaned? This is not the first time people have talked about the lack of cleanliness in the showers. We will be on the Summit in February and I am pretty forgiving on most things, but I want a clean bathroom/shower!

I'm going to be on the Summit in December and I'm getting pretty ticked reading all these bad reviews about moldy bathrooms and lack of staff. My bathroom at home is immaculate and I expect the same especially when I'm paying. I guess Celebrity is slowly becoming Carnival.

Every Carnival Cruise ship that I have been on has been incredibly clean and maintained!

Not meaning to be disrespectful, but I have sailed many Carnival ships as well as Celebrity and NCL. We have sailed Princess and HAL also owned by the Carnival ships.

The Carnival ships of Carnival..............are the cleanest ships we have sailed on. We have never been on a Carnival ship that had an outbreak of Norvo, and we have sailed over 100 days just on the Carnival brand Carnival. We do tend to sail the newer ships, but we sailed on the Fascination, which is old, and to my surprise.......it was spotless too.

Carnival has it's faults, mostly due to some of the passengers who cruise there, and I mean no offense. They are often young and full of beans, etc.

But No one can fault them on being clean.

Actually the dirtiest ship I have cruised was the Fascination. The cabin was in rough shape and this was back in 2002 when she was not that old. Shower was full of mildew. Both bed skirts were ripped with big holes. The restroom on the starboard side of the main theater smelled like a urinal all week and one did not have to enter to smell it. So yes Carnival and all cruise lines for that matter have areas that sometimes need some extra attention.

OP thanks for your review. We will be on the Summit next year. First time on a Millie class.

Ditto. We really appreciate your review. After a time away from Celebrity (last cruise was in an S2 during the inaugural season of Silhouette) we are returning for June 1 in a regular balcony on the Summit. It will be our first Celebrity Cruise as Elite members. Do you think, other than cabin size and amenities, that we will regret not booking CC or a suite? Part of our decision was booking a bit lower on the ship due to the potential for a bumpy ride to Bermuda. Just looking for some perspective from recent Summit cruisers.

Hah? Have you sailed on Carnival? I've never had a moldy bathroom on Carnival ship.

As someone else said, Carnival has it's faults, but none have to do with cleanliness of cabins.

We just did a B2B (March/April) on the Summit and did NOT have any mold or cracked tiles in our bathroom or shower. We did not have any issues with lack of staff. Service at all levels was fantastic!

We were on Summit in November. Great time to go, we normally go in the dead of winter. Out of 20 plus cruises this was top three. Food, service, drink package ease, fun level, Captain Leonardo being a great sport, concierge cabin in the back, Sunset bar, all exceed expectations. We are on Silhouette November 16th !
