swipe card?

Being this is my first cruise ever...I would like to purchase a lanyard and holder.

Does Princess sell these?

Is the swipe card horizonal or verticle? I would like a zip lock holder but wanted to know which way the zip lock should be.

Is the cabin key also the swipe card or is there a different way to enter the cabin such as key pad or key?

thanks!

Hi,

There is a single card that serves as your room key and is for your onboard charges. You will need this card every time you board or deboard the ship. The stripe is vertical.

Princess sells lanyards in the gift shop. You can take the card to the Purser desk and they will punch a hole in it for you so you don't need a plastic holder ( unless you want it for other purposes).

The Princess cruise card also has a bar code that's scanned every time you embark or disembark the ship.

I was in Staples recently and they had a variety of lanyards in the name badges section, from plain to bling.

There is no point in worrying about whether the opening of the plastic holder matches the direction of the magnetic stripe on your cruise card--you will have to remove the card completely from the holder to open your cabin door, make any purchases, embark and disembark the ship in port, or even to use the slots or electronic games in the casino. As suggested above, if you don't plan to use the holder for other things it may be better to get a lanyard with a clip and have a hole punched in your card.

[my .02] But let me share this with you: in researching your very first cruise you certainly find a lot of pros and cons of lanyards on Cruise Critic. You should know that they are far, far less popular on Princess than on other mainstream lines--in fact anyone other than a preteen or the elderly wearing one tends to stick out like a sore thumb. You will also be advertising your first-timer status to every other passenger and crew member with your blue cruise card. If one of your motives in wearing a lanyard is to show that you have a drinks package without having to take out your card, know this: (1) despite what goes on on other cruise lines, it is the height of rudeness to expect some sort of priority service in the bars by waving your card with the drink sticker on it in the air; and (2) it won't happen anyway--for alcoholic beverages you still must present your card to be swiped, though for the soda package one the servers get to know you they will automatically bring you your preferred order, no flourishes necessary. I like the coil lanyards in the casino. They are free and have a ring at one end (for the card) and a clip at the other end. Then you can either clip the clip to a belt loop and keep the card in your pocket or clip the clip to the ring and put it around your neck.

Either the slot attendants or the cashier will have the lanyards and a hole punch.

There are many reasons for people wanting to use a lanyard, primarily lack of pockets to keep card in when by the pool, or on the beach etc.

As for wanting priority service at bars, OP never mentioned it or asked about it, so not sure why you would even mention it.

For information, if I see someone with a blue card looking 'lost' on the ship, I am far more likely to help them than someone with Ruby, gold, platinum or elite cards. I call it being friendly and helpfull to new cruisers as I thought all experienced Princess cruisers would be nice enough and kind enough to help out the first timers when on board.

I use a casino lanyard to keep my card on, and the general use of lanyards to keep your card safe is certainly growing on Princess and I don't think anyone 'sticks out' when wearing them.

Fishywood, I am on Princess Elite but have cruised on various lines. I am not a pre-teen, elderly or a first-time cruiser but I never lost my card and I'm always losing things. I always know where my card is: it is in the plastic pocket on my lanyard which is round my neck when I'm moving around the ship or on its hook in my cabin when I'm not wearing it. I wouldn't cruise without my lanyard and I wouldn't care if nobody ever wore one again, I would continue using mine.

It's never a bad thing to be a first timer. There is no 'low' status that a passenger has just because it's their first cruise. Everyone starts as a first time cruiser. It's good to have a nice vacation, your first or your tenth.

Also, if Nannabananna is planning on going on either the Royal and I'm speculating also the Regal, they will require their cruise card to turn on the lights in their cabin, by placing it in the proper lighting slot by the cabin door.

I am not a preteen or elderly, and I always use a lanyard. I am fortunate to not need to carry reading glasses or medications, as I prefer to wear sun dresses, which generally do not have pockets, I like not having to carry anything.

Of course should I wish to carry my iPod for music and photo taking, I tend to use a wristlet. OP these are generally frowned upon by many on cruise forums as well, but are very useful if you prefer not to carry a larger bag.

Why is a wristlet frowned upon? If it fits your needs use it. I see many being used all the time.

I have done many Princess cruises and almost always use a lanyard. Lots of my outfits do not have pockets, especially formal wear. I do not carry a purse while on the ship. Therefore a lanyard is the perfect answer. I could care less if people see I am elite. Fact is often it(the cruise card) gets turned around with the back facing out so no one knows my status. Right after I board, I get the hole punched in the card at the purser's desk. Princess does sell lanyard's in one of their stores but I bring my old ski lift ticket holder which has an elastic pull then clips onto the card. Many people use lanyards on cruises including Princess passengers.

It runs the length of the card similar to a credit card.

Please feel free to wear your cruise card anyway you wish!!

We just punch the hole and place the hook through the card with no enclosure, so we don't need to remove it from anything to use it.

It comes up periodically on the cruise and fashion boards. I know they are popular, just like lanyards, but people often need to let you know "they don't get it"

I wear a lanyard, too. Sometimes it's a conversation piece. People who recognize that you are a multiple cruiser will ask you questions. I see no reason to keep your sailing experience a secret.

Plus, just in case you haven't noticed: are you familiar with the slip of paper that has your name displayed on the little mail holder which is located outside your cabin door- it has a captain's circle logo on it in the color that indicates your status. First cruisers' are Blue, etc up to Elite status which has a black logo.

You can buy lanyards on board in the shops. They have different kinds, some very plain and some really "blingy". I never use one myself but was tempted by the blingy ones! You will see all sorts or people using them - ignore the statement that only kids or old people use them. Do what ever makes you happy. If you want to use a lanyard, carry a purse or use a wristlet do it. Ignore the people who say not to. Do you really care what they think? After all, who says their opinion is correct. :)

I too use my lanyard, I always know where my cruise card is. If you do not want to buy a lanyard just go to the cashier cage in the casino and they will give you one free, they even punch a hole in the card and attach it for you.

And if you like to play trivia, and are lucky enough to win, one of the 'big' prizes they give out is a princess lanyard.

Have a great cruise

There's so many cute lanyards you can get (Walmart, specialty stores), or you can go with a plain one (stationery stores). But no one is forcing you to get and use one. But I find using one very handy on the ship. I have a plastic sleeve that I slip it in. I also use a small purse around the ship for my camera, sunscreen, paperback book or puzzle magazine.

If someone thinks it's ridiculous for anyone to use a lanyard, that's their problem.

this is a silly discussion...lanyard or no lanyard. Every cruiser has a right to carry or display their cruise card any way they want. Our TA gives out a holder that is just big enough to hold a lipstick, Kleenex and small mirror or whatever. (Casino Money:eek:) It has a zipper closure. In the front of the little holder is a small slot for the cruise card which is covered by a clear plastic window. The holder is hung around the neck on a corded string hanging down to the waistline. When I order drinks or shop in one of the stores they look at my folio number which can be seen through the plastic window,I only need to take my card out to open the cabin door.

I don't understand why cruisers would get uncomfortable or upset seeing the color of my cruise card, I am not showing of my cruise history I am wearing the holder since my cloth have no pockets and I like to keep my hands free.:)

Then that is some other person's problem. Too many people don't seem to get it these to get things these days.

I found a nice ID holder on a lanyard at the Coach outlet -- tan leather and crocodile. It fits my cruise card, coffee card, has a clear side for putting photo ID, and can fit a credit card. I wear it under my clothes in port. I don't like to wear it to dinner, so I just stick the cruise card in my brocket.
