geomapper Posted April 28, 2014 #1 Share Posted April 28, 2014 Just curious if anyone has received any savings once they reach the age of 55 when booking a cruise?
tropicaledrink Posted April 28, 2014 #2 Share Posted April 28, 2014 Well, I'm not 55, but my Dad turned 55 this past March - and he is now able to price match to that rate (we're booked ES). So he now has a $180 credit per person that neither my brother's family or I can price match to! :P
rdler Posted April 28, 2014 #3 Share Posted April 28, 2014 I am 55+. My age has done nothing for me in terms of rates.
KenMo Posted April 28, 2014 #4 Share Posted April 28, 2014 We've always booked ES since it has become available. We've price matched to the Senior Rate several times.
blondietink Posted April 28, 2014 #5 Share Posted April 28, 2014 Both DH and I are over 55, and I don't believe I have ever been offered a senior rate when looking at various cruise itineraries, even though I check the 55+ rate (along with state and VIFP). Doesn't seem like it ever comes up for us.
beachbum53 Posted April 28, 2014 #6 Share Posted April 28, 2014 Just curious if anyone has received any savings once they reach the age of 55 when booking a cruise? Nope. We went past 55 a few years ago, and we've never received any savings based on our age. If you can live with the restrictions, Early Saver is the way to go.;)
ready2cruzagain Posted April 28, 2014 #7 Share Posted April 28, 2014 Yes, several times.

snc_cam Posted April 28, 2014 #9 Share Posted April 28, 2014 I turned 55 a year ago and have not seen senior rates either. I am currently booked on 3 cruises with ES and have some good prices... All three are now higher than when I booked, so not sure if I will see OBC price drops... But, not a problem since I do have good rates Steve
jackparts Posted April 28, 2014 #10 Share Posted April 28, 2014 With NCL, you get a 5% discount if you are AARP. However, the OBC you get from your PVP or travel agent cannot be used onboard as advertised. Not double dipped but you will be told to take it up when you get back. Once you are back, it's no longer OBC and NCL will not honor it. I know, happened to me on the Darn Dawn over Thanksgiving. After fighting with the credit card company, NCL will give me the credit on my next cruise with NCL in the twelve months after the cruise. Too late, I booked two cruises with Carnival in 2014. Ten cruises (72 people) with NCL and now they lost all that revenue over $450 in OBC.
FireEater Posted April 28, 2014 #11 Share Posted April 28, 2014 I get a better discount at Denny's...
okgirl Posted April 28, 2014 #12 Share Posted April 28, 2014 I'm probably on the booking engine twice a week and have only had the senior rate come up 3 or 4 times.
Sparky2 Posted April 28, 2014 #13 Share Posted April 28, 2014 We've always booked ES since it has become available. We've price matched to the Senior Rate several times. We also book ES and have priced dropped once to Senior Rate. Then we priced dropped to Military a few times after that. Hoping to do well for our 2015 B2B but so far no price drops. However, since our Freedom B2B has been moved to Conquest (darn!), I'm hoping we'll get some price drops in the future.
javamom Posted April 28, 2014 #14 Share Posted April 28, 2014 Just curious if anyone has received any savings once they reach the age of 55 when booking a cruise? Yes we have gotten a reduced fare and also once upgraded to OV from Interior due to 55+ rates.
sjcruiser Posted April 28, 2014 #15 Share Posted April 28, 2014 I've never seen the senior rate when booking for my mom, but I have noticed that she's getting better rates, and obc when I check the 55+ box, this includes one of the free cruises, and one time Platinum upgrade, which has never happened before. grumpyjr88 Posted April 28, 2014 #16 Share Posted April 28, 2014 When I cruise with my mom, we usually get a lower rate than if I booked without her. Her 'Senior' rate comes in handy!
srlafleur Posted April 28, 2014 #17 Share Posted April 28, 2014 I think whether or not it's one of the available discounts depends on the sailing.
maldenmusic Posted April 28, 2014 #18 Share Posted April 28, 2014 When I book, it always asks if I'm over 55 which I am. But not certain if it really saves me anything or not.
MCC retired Posted April 28, 2014 #19 Share Posted April 28, 2014 At times the 55 + rate code may not be for your category or not the better rate code than what other one that you have available to you (PG, Res , ES , ect.) Rate codes can not be combined . 55 + rate codes usually come out closer in to sailing .
francina Posted April 28, 2014 #20 Share Posted April 28, 2014 Not me. Except when I used my AARP card on NCL. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk

Same with me on NCL. It was cheaper when I added my father with the AARP card.
KenMo Posted April 28, 2014 #22 Share Posted April 28, 2014 My brother just got a price drop using the Senior Rate (he originally booked ES). $45pp...not bad!
seeing this world Posted April 29, 2014 #23 Share Posted April 29, 2014 i purposely booked two rooms and put myself in one and husband in another just in case we can get that break. There was one cruise where we got a 55+ break and it was a nice perk.I will take any price drops if it comes my way.
Maraprince Posted April 29, 2014 #24 Share Posted April 29, 2014 Really depends on the sailing. With some dates, you may be better off with a residency rate discount than even a special promotional rate. Pays to keep checking on the rate for your sailing. lady_cruiser Posted April 29, 2014 #25 Share Posted April 29, 2014 4 out of 5 cruises we receive Senior Rates. Sometime you have to calla PVP and ask if they have any Senior Rates since they are not always visible when booking a cruise.
