What would you want Carnival to do to accomodate

What folks need to keep in mind is that the smoking "ban" is not as much about accommodating non smokers as it is a way to cut costs. Both in cabin cleaning and in the liability insurance rate that the cruise company is paying.

My wife is a smoker and I enjoy a good cigar from time to time. I believe a dedicated smoking lounge is in order, always has been. And yes, carnival cruisers are not known for over using the library- so why not convert it to some revenue generating space.

Not to those advocating unlimited use of e-cigs. The jury is still out on the second hand effect of the vapor and I for one get headaches from breathing in some of the flavored concoctions that folks are using to make their nicotine ingestion more tasty.

I have heard that from a few folks but honestly if they were being used on the balcony I doubt the vapor would get anywhere near you. Personally I think they should at least accomodate that.

I suspect the insurance is the bigger part, but this is a good point. The push to ban balcony smoking started after that Star Princess fire years back. I'm guessing Carnival and NCL have been getting some serious pressure from their insurers.

Completely smoking ship so they can cruise like they want and let us non smokers have more room on the other ships

Good one!

It's obvious the rules are being made by non smokers. If they had input from one smoker who criused on, for instance Paradise, recently, they'd be able to speak to the issues faced by smokers who can't find any place except 4 stools at the casino bar or a small area on Lido. When it rained, it was those 4 stools! Needless to say, large crowds gathered at that bar with make shift ash trays--bar glasses, drink cans--just to grab a 5 minute smoke.

I agree with allowing vaping. As for the "flavored nicotine" many, many people who vape do not have nicotine in their e-cigs. I have some in mine, as I just started, and will continue to cut down till I don't need it anymore. I am having great success at not smoking. Please, before anyone post negatives on vaping - get some information first. And the most harmful part of cigarettes is the carcinogens not the nicotine.

It's not that difficult!

For outside:

Shade/weather protection.

Sun if you want it.

Pool/hot tub a plus.

For everywhere:

Chairs, tables, and ashtrays THAT ARE EMPTIED.

I agree with the previous posters about the Dream... we did a B2B last fall, and it was nice that we had the 2nd deck from the pool, covered by the deck above. Bucket of beers, football, pizza, and an ashtray. Great Monday night.

There was a nice area on the outside promenade deck, with both covered and uncovered area, a hot tub, and a bar right inside. Great location.

There was even a little tucked-away area at the very back of the ship. Not scenic, but just a couple of steps away from our room.

I'm sure at least some of the areas have been whined away by now. :(

Please note: My comments are based on what I, a smoker, have experienced on the Liberty. The issues I experienced may be different on another ship.

Having a designated outdoor smoking area is fine, but there are some issues that need to be addressed. Making people go to the windiest part of the ship, with nothing blocking the wind, and a couple of ashtrays, is not the best idea. On the Liberty, as some of you may know, the designated outdoor smoking area is along the starboard side of deck 10, as well as the rear of deck 10. I would imagine that ashes, and the occasional cigerette butt, have been blown onto the Aft balconies. If Carnival wants us to go to an outdoor area for smoking, it needs to have some type of partitions that will block the wind, tables and chairs so that people can sit down, and a large wind proof ashtray at each table. It would also be nice if there was a self-serve coffee maker nearby, and maybe a bar where you could get a cold adult beverage. Is that too much to ask for?

I agree with some partition or wind block for the outer decks. Even with a torch lighter, trying to light a cigar outside while the wind is blowing uses a lot of butane, and matches are useless. I ran out of butane on our last trip, but luckily in the D.R., one of the cigar vendors in the marketplace let me buy their's and threw in a few cigars. Since I'm flying in for this cruise also, Im taking two lighters, but will have to get them filled or buy some butane once I get to my hotel, which I believe has a WalMart not to far.

Years ago, when they decided to create the Serenity deck, I though how great, an adult area where adults can have an adult beverage and do an adult thing like smoke, but no, it was an adult area with out kids, and you can drink, and party, but not get to loud, but smoke, no, they put the smokers up by the kids in the pool area. Then you could still enjoy some peace and quiet and have a smoke on the back of the restaurant, on the starboard side, under cover, with a view of the Serenity area, but no, they took that away too. And they said you can smoke on your balcony, so you paid more to cruise, and then they took that away too. I do understand about insurance liability, but would all these people leave objects burning if ashtrays had been emptied? Or if people get drunk, and forget they quit smoking and start smoking and hide it, like throw it down on another balcony, what about the liability then?

Where will the crew smoke? That's one question,

and guys,(sorry, it's the yankee in me) this is amazing that good clear thinking ideas and suggestions of sane people have been read and reread, and are still out there now for over a week.

Sounds perfect. I would like to see pics of the area if anyone has any to share. I really like the size of conquest, but I would consider those others if it was worth it, comfort-wise.

Here's a picture of RCCL's Allure of the Seas outdoor cigar bar, post #19:

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1097448

I enjoyed that cigar bar quite often last yr.

Has most of the features we're looking for:

- high 11th deck

- glass enclosed, so great views, wind protected

- full bar

- nice lounge chairs & tables

- separate area, not a walk-thru corridor, with signs stating it's a cigar bar

- advertised in the daily newsletter: "Come join your fellow cigar afficianados at the "Cigars under the Stars..."

Also, the Captain of the Conquest (on our cruise a few yrs back) held Cigars under the Stars event...

I have no problem with that at all. Just not sure it's a good idea to allow them in all public spaces.

We were on celebrity last year and they had a very nice bar aft that allowed cigarettes and cigars. My husband smokes cigars and that was his favorite place.

Sorry op but I broke your rules because I am not a smoker but I do not care if anyone else is.

I honestly can't believe that they would make all balconies non smoking ! You never ever make a decision that will make your customers want to cancel your business . I can see having a block of cabins for smokers so you will not lose paying customers . Especially now with the Economy so bad.

I take my parents on a cruise every year and my stepdads favorite part of the trip was sitting on the balcony with a scotch having a smoke watching the waves my mom and just recovered from a wreck , her car was hit by a train . So she wasn't able to do a lot of walking but would sat on the balcony and rest with him . I'm sad to say that was my last cruise with them . He will not go now that he can't do what he enjoys most , and I'm not going to make them go if they can't enjoy themselves . I for the most part will have a smoke Ever now and then and really like the covered floor over the pool area on the dream and the balcony . I must say I'm Very sad knowing we want be planning our cruise this year. :(

You are talking about a small subset of passengers that will cancel because they can't smoke. Besides, if they cancel, where are they going to book? HAL and NCL? Those are the only choices left. Society has moved away from tolerating the nuisance of cigarette smoke.

Only HAL now. NCL recently announced their new policy banning smoking on balconies.

As a long time cigar enthusiast I have had the fortune to enjoy every jazz club-cigar lounge on every cruise I have ever taken. I don't get a balcony room since I usually only have my cigar after dinner, except on sea days when I might have another small one. The cigar lounge with bar and music is the best idea they had. On the sunshine they replaced that space with more cabins. My next cruise is in Dec. on the Sunshine, so I'm disappointed with the new rules. But I will comply with those rules. I try not to offend when I partake, so if I happen to offend anyone with my cigars on this cruise then just head over to a balcony and enjoy the fresh air and please leave me alone.

The main difference between tattooed, cigar smoking bikers and those who aren't is that we don't care that your not.

Enjoy your cruises and cigars.

RCCL Allure of the Seas has the first Starbucks at Sea, & also has a few Name brand retail stores onboard. Thus, Carnival should partner up with Cigar Afficianado club (NYC) or Fuente (Vegas) to create a first class cigar lounge...

How about the deck that goes all the way around the ship? There is never anyone out there and it is covered. Can't remember the name of the deck but it is usually below the lifeboats.

Promenade deck. yes you used to be able to smoke there-in the past.

When I was on the repositioning cruise on the Sunshine you were allowed to smoke on one of the sides on the Promenade decks (I think the Port side). I usually went there to read and vape in peace. An ideal place to smoke and vape...covered, a huge area, relaxing and a beautiful view of the ocean. The other side was non-smoking so everyone was happy.

That's how it was on our Caribbean Princess cruise. The joggers still got pissy, though, even though there were plenty of other places for them to run.

Princess banned balcony smoking shortly before we booked, so we got a window suite instead. It was on the same deck as the cigar bar, so DH was happy. I got a huge room and a bathtub, so I was happy. Win-win!
