Has their been an increase in drunken behavior on Royal Caribbean ships.

Recommended Posts

Just came back from a 5 day everybody was drinking because everyone wanted to be in the beautiful sun and the activities were inside. No one wanted to be inside so yeah the drinking was increased but everyone was fine when I got drunk I just went to my room and took a nap!

While unfortunate, there is no way of knowing however if this was the result of beverage package purchase consumption or just too much "pay as you go" drinking.

10 cruises and I've only seen two totally drunk people and they both were before the new packages. One was a guy who was totally blitz when he showed up to Muster. He was the loud obnoxious type and was escorted away quickly. The other was a 18-20 year old girl in Belize. Our excursion was canceled and we took the tender back to the ship around noon. A family had found her at the pier and helped her back to the ship. She had went ashore alone and got drunk somewhere by noon. She was the result of an emergency code call shortly after.

I've had two cruises since the package started. One of them was a 4 day Halloween cruise on Majesty and that was a fun, but responsible crowd.

Just wondering if there has been a increase in drunken behavior, with the introduction of Royal Carribbean drinking plans.Your opinion on this. :)

Yes. Drunken behavior has increased by 39% since the introduction of the Royal Caribbean drinking plan, but only on 42% of the ships for a net increase of slightly over 16%.

However, half of those people said they would've "behaved like drunks" even without the plan, so that actually decreases the increase to right around 8%.

We just got off Freedom this past Sunday....Didn't really notice too many drunk people until late at night in the Crypt. At least 2 of those nights ended with security turning on all the lights and breaking up a brawl, but that could happen on any given night at any bar on land....so I think it is no different than anyplace else.

We did notice however how Freedom will sell anyone a drink.... Both my daughters were asked if they would like a cocktail (17 & 20) neither one of them looks older than 17 and it happened all the time. And a ton of kids around 18 -20 were in the casino every night drinking and getting served....when one kid bragged that he wouldn't be 21 till this week, the pit boss called security over. They talked to him and he said "they asked me if I wanted a drink, I said yes...so they gave me some" To his credit he was correct. Think about it, if RCI cared to stop underage drinking they would put it right on their ID "Under 21", but they don't. Doesn't bother me any, but just an observation.

On one more note....Wife and I both got drink package and we were shocked to see we had almost 170 cocktails in 7 days. Shocked because it is not like we were ever drunk in those 7 days, but we did start in the morning (10) and stopped in the evening (3am)....woops

Haha haha. I was reading this post whole telling myself to stop because it is a waste of time. Thanks for proving me wrong.

Chatting to one of the bartenders about mid way through our trip on Radiance earlier this year, he told us that on the first night of the 11-night cruise two men were banned from alcohol consumption after overdoing it more than just a little bit. He did stress to us, as he poured our next drink, that it wasn't unusual for people to be banned from imbibing, but not usually that early into the trip.

I did the 2 night sample cruise on IOS from Southampton to Le Harve with my mum last May and there were a lot of groups (hen and stag parties, 30th birthdays etc.), all of which were taking absolute advantage of the drinking package. We decided not to get the package last year as mum barely drinks and at that time both passengers had to purchase the package.

I'm doing the same cruise this year on AOS with a friend and when we tried to purchase the drinks package we were informed they are now only available on sailings of 3+ nights.

I'll be interested to see how this impacts the drinking behaviour of my fellow passengers this year!

  • 2 weeks later...

I've done quite a bit of cruising, and I've never been on one where there wasn't someone who couldn't hold their liquor...LOL. Seriously though, I think that the crazies seem to really go hard at the deck parties with the DJs; at least that's been my experience.

LMAO -- My stats are a little different -- using the same information, my stats actually show the increase to be right around 0.2% except for the period of March 12-March 31st.

We have been on 2 cruises since the drinking package was instituted. There were not any people who threw up in the hallways, staggered in the promenade yelled and whistled at women or picked any physical fights.

There were the usual people however, who pushed and shoved, held seats and made a ruckus because they were told they couldn't save seats etc. We travel outside of the spring break season so I don't know about younger generation parties but they would take over hot tubs with their drinks before the drinking plans. It is not possible to answer such a question since the length of the cruise, time frame and the ship itself and the amount of alcohol consumed differed from cruise to cruise along with the behavior of passengers even before the drink packages.

Before the drink packages I've seen people who were obviously "over served" - leading me to think that the bar tenders didn't really care as long as the card kept coming. One gentleman in the elevator was at the stage "very seasoned" drinkers get where they look "normal" , standing upright, not talking and totally unaware of where they are with wife to take them back to cabin. Basically a black out stage - I was surprised the bar tenders would not have recognized the signs. Thought this would happened more often with the packages or are the drinks weaker?

I have not noticed a change since the packages started. Even before the packages I have been in a few CL and DL lounges that had plenty of people that have had a bit more than they needed.... even myself a time or two.

I have also sailed on Celebrity with their package a couple time and it did not seem to be an issue over there either.
