The long ones definitely worth doing through the ship is twelve apostles and great ocean road

Other is dandenong ranges with antique and cultural tour

Wouldn't suggest any others from ship

You can do a free hop on hop off bus around the city once you catch the tram in and go to the markets

As mentioned, lots to do anything that would take longer than 6 hours, I suggest using the Ship's excursions so that you have no chance of missing the ship. Longert rips include things like the great ocean road, winery tours, nature park at healesville, train in the Dandenongs, etc . Get your ideas from the website for the ship's shorexs. Things to do in the city are plentiful, just a short tram (buy a MYKI card at the dock first) or cab ride away from the pier, also St Kilda is quite popular.:D

Keep in mind if you're doing comparisons that you're up for $14/person for the Myki tourist pack just to catch the tram to the city and back.

Still the cheapest of transport alternatives, but if you have other transport costs after, makes the excursions more cost effective.

It is a pity the OP's cruise goes to Melb. instead of Hobart. (the Solstice alternates between the two on her cruises to and from NZ)

Whilst the locals in Melb. love the place, to me it is a non event for tourists. Just another dreary city. :(

Unfortunately I have had to go there far too many times.

Hobart on the other hand is a delightful place and a visitor's dream:)

cheers

Aww melbourne is like a mini New York for me. It has St Paul ' s Cathedral, the old melbourne Goal, amazing restaurants try booking Maha Bar and Grill, IL solito Posto or Chin Chin for hip new Asian (can't book) mamacita is good Mexican. Excellent shopping at the new Emporium, Bourke Street, the Block arcade is lovely. St Kinda is trendy, Richmond has bargain shopping. Vic markets have excellent hot jam donuts and south melbourne dim sims are awesome! Ice skating at Rock lands and DFO shopping. Tours of the MCG - impressive for sports fans. If you book early enough and time permits the colonial tram car restaurant is supposed to be an amazing experience. I could go on haha. I'm in country Vic but love the city! Oh and crown casino is great if your into gambling, plus a cool little bar under the bridge sits on the yarra called Ponyfish Island. Plenty of boat tours too. Chapel street in south yarra is nice too!

A ferry ride to Williamstown for fish and chips.

Also our zoo is pretty good particularly for o/s visitors.

Somewhere there is an ice pub/bistro, think it is near docklands or southbank, a bit of a novelty but some folk might like it. I know a guy who took his girlfriend there to propose. Mr google will probably help you find it.

Botanic gardens

St Kilda

Captain cooks cottage and Fitzroy gardens

Great Port guide Fletch. I would also add that hiring a car and driving to the dandenong ranges and doing a walk in the rainforests/gardens is worth considering. 1-1.5 hour drive from Port. Beautiful area- lots of tree ferns and cooler than Melbourne. I've lived in Olinda in the dandenong ranges for the past year and I still think every day that this is one of the most beautiful places I've been to the world.

Melbourne has a million things to see, and is a large city, trouble is you only have a short stay, a bus trip will let you see a bit of the city and the country side , while its fun exploring, if you take an organised shore tour that will maximise the time you have and not wasted trying to find things. You will just have to come back on more trips :)

Melbourne has heaps to offer and is a world class city . In the CBD Federation Square, Old Melbourne Gaol, National Gallery of Victoria - 2 galleries at Federation Square for Australian art, and in St Kilda Road for the stunning International collection, Victoria Market, Royal Melbourne Zoo at Parkville one of the worlds great zoos. Take 109 tram from Station Pier to CBD .

Further afield by Ships Shore excursion the Great Ocean Road and Dandenong Ranges and Puffing Billy .

Lots to do & see in & around Melbourne so I suggest you research that based on your interests.Anyone who says there is nothing to see or do in Melbourne does not know this wonderful & vibrant city. I recommend you don't travel to the Great Ocean Road as it will be a full day tour with not a lot of time off the bus.Trips to the wineries or to the Dandenongs (Puffing Billy train) are more practical but the City Centre & some surrounding areas are great for the time available. It is very easy to do on your own.
