I'm in my cabin. Among the usual tree-killing amount of paper was this on Princess letterhead:

(my cabin number) Voyage 5444

November 10, 2014

Dear Princess Guest:

Welcome to Los Angeles and Golden Princess.

We would like to take this opportunity to advise you to a change of our departure time from Los Angeles. Golden Princess is in the process of carrying out necessary maintenance work. While this is in no way compromises the safety of our guests and crew, which is our highest priority, it is necessary for us to remain at berth in Los Angeles until 8:00 AM tomorrow, Tuesday, November 11, in order to complete the required work. This change will not impact our call to Catalina on Wednesday, November 12.

The Customs and Border Patrol (sic, CBP stands for Customs and Border Protection) have advised us that guests will not be permitted to go back ashore once they have embarked. Therefore all guests must be on board by 3:30 PM today, Monday, November 10. Once everyone is on board we will conduct our Emergency Drill at 4:00 PM. While Golden Princess remains docked in San Pedro, port regulation require that the casino and boutiques remain closed. Please feel free to enjoy our specialty restaurants, bars, spa, and entertainment options.

Thank you for your understanding. The officers and crew of Golden Princess are here to serve you and we all wish you a bon voyage.

Kind regards,

Captain Vincenzo Lubrano

Golden Princess

No biggie. You are onboard!!! Call it a sea day and enjoy yourself. The only change will be less cruising in a circle before stopping at Catalina. I would bet that quite a few people on your cruise have the same sort of day when the ship hits Ensenada. They will treat that as another "in port sea day".

I actually like Ensenada ... I'm not in the least unhappy. Keeps us in range of T-Mobile's server that my iPhone can send over to my laptop. A

No. We will sit at dockside all night and then leave at 8 am. It doesn't matter. Catalina isn't far.

On my recent Golden shorties, one left at midnight and the other at 5:30 pm. The three before that all sat at the pier until late. I hope they get that girl fixed since I'm doing South American on her in two months. On another note, if you get to P/E/S lounge, see if server Alex is on duty. She was so great to my grandsons when I had to take them along to lounge when kids' club closed up early. (They were perfect angels, too.) :)

We had the same thing happen when we sailed the Golden the end of Sept. At that time, they had to fix the thrusters. Would love to hear what maintenance problem they're having now. We're sailing on the Golden next August, to Alaska. Sure hope everything is fixed by then!

Staying in port is costing Princess a small fortune. They pay a huge amount for every hour spent in port plus they are losing out on shop sales and the casino. It's not a decision made lightly so chances are that whatever maintenance has to be done is very necessary.

What they don't tell you is that any drinks also will include LA sales tax in addition to the 15% gratuity. I would imagine that it would be the same for any paid-for activity.

Not true. We've ordered many drinks while still docked... we were never charged sales tax.

Not true? Hmm...., well here I sit looking at our receipt from Skywalkers Elite happy hour on our Oct. 28th sailing on the Golden. We left late from San Pedro and I remarked that we seemed to be leaving really slowly. I mentioned to my wife that if we were too close to LA we might be charged LA sales tax on our drinks. Apparently we were too close because there was a 90¢ charge on the bill that was shown as LAX LocTax. The only time that we ever saw that sort of thing added to any of our ship charges.

They are having the same issue according to the port person I talked with as we were disembarking this morning.

I can't remember if the local tax shows up on the receipt you actually sign at the bar, but check your actual cruise card statement and the tax will probably show up there. When we cruised on the Grand the last 10days of October, we were charged local tax for all drinks purchased in both San Pedro and San Diego.

It shows up in both places in our case.

The other thing they can't do is take food out of the buffet (dining area).

We were once prevented from removing food from the buffet while docked in San Pedro, but that was on disembarkation day only, and it was on Royal Caribbean, not Princess

I can't remember why we weren't allowed to removed the food and coffee frm the buffet, but they were very strict about it c:rolleyes:

We didn't try it on our RCCL cruise, but, we have always done it on Princess cruises (and not on disembarkation day either -- you have to be out of the cabin by 8:00am).

Any idea yet what the problem is? We sail this Friday with four new cruisers. I would be upset if we sat at the port overnight. I hope they get it fixed. I know things happen but it was so hard for everyone to get off of work at the same time.

I hope you have a good cruise!

Taking food out of buffet should be OK because the OP said that passengers wouldn't be able to disembark once they boarded (at least unil the cruise is over )
