How long before Carnival goes to the wrist bands

All the people that keep talking about how a wristband would look with their clothing on a particular night seem really odd to me. I mean -- are you wearing your S&S card around your neck with that dress? Or are you sticking it in a little purse or something instead? Wouldn't you do the exact same thing with a wristband?? It's not like these are bonded to your wrist or something. The ones at Disney, at least, come off and on just fine.

Just seems weird that so many people are worried about whether or not a wristband would go with their outfit. Well, then don't wear it with that outfit -- just like you wouldn't wear your S&S card currently...

No to wrist bands...

My S&S will have a casino stretchy lanyard which I will wrap around my wrist when it isn't in my pocket.

I have never lost my S&S card

I save my S&S cards and mementos

We need em on the new ships to keep the lights on!!!

Everyone has a different size wrist and not everyone likes to wear a wristband that is tight, and naturally, the standard size would only for a fraction of the passengers....

Keep the S&S card!!!!!

Well, actually, it's a lot easier (and less obvious) to stick a little, flat plastic card in my bra, than an odd-shaped, bulky wristband thing. I don't carry purses on cruises.

Just to note it, Disney does wristbands of ONE size for everyone in the park from little kids to large adults like me. They are adjustable and work quite well.

Don't get me wrong -- if you don't want them, that's cool. I don't really care either way if they use them on ships one day. But if the size is your concern, it really shouldn't be. Disney has already been the test case for hundreds of thousands of people and there really isn't a significant "wrist size" issue. :)

I personally don't like the feel of anything on my wrist which is why I don't wear a watch and rarely wear a bracelet. If Carnival went to wristbands, I would simply put it in my pocket or wear it on a lanyard around my neck. All I really care about is being able to get on the ship, into my room, play in the casino and buy a drink or two. If I can do all that, then life is good!

An RFID chip can be embedded into the ship card, meaning they can work under the same infrastructure.

RFID chips are in my Citibank card and at WalMart I have to place it is the card reader in a slot on the bottom rather than swiping it where all the other cards without chips are swiped. Even if you are correct, which I know you are not, all systems on the ship will have to be changed to accomodate the new technology - all room locks, all point of sale input devices, all casino systems, all guest services systems, all ship security systems, to name just a few. And the cost of that type of technology is not cheap, and requires very careful migration.

First of all, your Citibank card utilizes NFC, not RFID.

An RFID ship card will use the same infrastructure as an RFID wristband. All hotel rooms at Walt Disney World are equipped with RFID locks that work simultaneously with a Key to the World card and a MagicBand. All doors on the Quantum of the Seas are RFID ready to use either a SeaPass or a WOWBand. At select Starwood hotels (Five Ws, one Element and one aLoft) are equipped with NFC and Bluetooth locks for SPG Keyless. These can be used with NFC room keys. By the end of 2015, all Ws, Elements and aLofts will be ready for SPG Keyless.

Change is inevitable and when time has come to remove the magnetic strip and replace it with active radios, a ship card or a wristband will not operate independently. There was a time when you were given a hard key at hotels and on cruise ships.

As someone who was involved with the rollout of MyMagic+ at Walt Disney World, I highly recommend you review Disney's patent relating to its Guest Experience Management System and Method (Patent).

By the way, the post that was quoted was in disbelief of the possibility of a ship card and a wristband being used simultaneously. I assumed it was obvious that consideration would be given to having the equipment replaced on older ships (or the older ships simply forgotten) with it being launched on a newer ship, similar to Royal Caribbean's rollout. Carnival isn't currently known for its technological innovations.

I am sorry, but I am still unable to understand what benefit to Carnival and its customers the "desired" wristband implementation will bring. Could someone, or someones, please clearly state the benefits they think will occur and what the value of those benefits are to Carnival and their customers. None quantifiable or pretend benefits such as "it will allow us to get on and off the ship faster", it will allow us to get drinks faster", "it will remove the need to sign bar tabs", or anything like these will not be looked at as serious attempts to state the value of such an expensive change.

To see the benefit, as suggested in a previous post, give this a read: http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PG01&p=1&u=/netahtml/PTO/srchnum.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=20130018661.PGNR.

The important things that would apply to a cruise ship and its customers that are covered in this article are already provided by the S&S card system currently used by Carnival, or could be with minor enhancements to the current systems. Others listed are not needed, not beneficial, and/or invasions of the users privacy. The document does not answer my question about what does this "new" wristband system bring to the table that does not already exist. In my 30+ years of business systems development and implementation, if it does not bring process and performance improvements or is not cost effective then it should not be done.

I would imagine for the same reasons Disney spent that billion to get it going in the first place. Simply to shorten lines is not the only reason otherwise why put it into the resorts restaurants and water parks?

Does anyone think carnival will go to the wristbands like Disneyworld? I think the disney ships are making the move as well as RCCL. If you dont know what I'm talking about basically its a band that opens your door has all your info so you can make purchases it very convenient and less likely to be lost then the current SS card. What do you guys think.

As long as the wristbands were water proof, I would like it.

Based upon everything I have seen and read, I do not need or want them to know by every move on the ship. There is enough big brother things in life without wristbands to see where you are on the ship.

I really like the wristband concept. They could even program it to allow access to Cloud 9 spa for those when reserve the rooms. Sooner the better IMO.

I suspect in 10 years they'll be using implantable RIF chips and DNA scanners and people will be in awe of the technology that allows big brother to track our every move and report it to the authorities on our Iphone 27's. ;)

The idea that another tracking device is on my body while I am on vacation just sends chills down my spine.... NOT hardly!

I spend my business life keeping clients from downloading/uploading malware and keeping their data safe. I'm not about to let "Carnival" follow me around the ship anymore than they do already. Nah...

Agree, Royal ( and Disney from the land perspective) have taken this particular area way to far. Knowing every place you are around the ship, how long you are there and tracking your every move is not in the better interest of cruisers.

I would personally prefer a wristband, as I always worry about somehow managing to lose our S&S cards.

We find the Disney World MagicBands really nice getting to use them to open our room, entrance into the parks, paying for purchases, etc. I would love something similar for our cruises with Carnival.

We always keep our bands for memories so I don't see why people can't just save the bands like they do the S&S cards. Maybe they could add the touch of putting the sail date and ship name on the bands to make them more of a keepsake for cruisers, that would be very simple. Or, you could just personalize them yourself like we do with our MagicBands. Etsy always has cute decals and stuff :D
