One would think if the restaurant becomes popular for the menu but they find less and less use it for a formal venue-we all know what could happen.

 

Then, it could be the true passing of formal night/venue. What's that expression, use it or lose it. So for those who love dressing up, don't let the ship dictate how you dress and enjoy your personal formal evenings. Am I correct in saying that most are reporting that already it's pretty much down to smart casual???

"Formal Night" is going the way of the "Midnight Buffet"

That is exactly what I said on our last cruise (which had no midnight buffet -- but a "lunch extravaganza which was a disaster)... in any event, my husband would be so happy -- every cruise we've had arguments when packing ahead of time (him not wanting to pack suits and my insistence that he do so) and then, lo and behold, we go to formal night and there are people wearing baseball caps and softball jerseys over jeans/shorts. Naturally, DH points them all out to me. *sigh* So although he (we) would never ever dress to that extreme for ANY restaurant on ship (sit down dinner restaurant), it would be nice to not feel obligated (and I do feel a sense of obligation, but not complaining about it).

Having one restaurant dedicated to formal theme sounds good in theory, but I noticed on our Quantum cruise that it wasn't very realistic.

 

It's silly for just a handful of people dining in that venue on a given night to dress up when the rest of the ship is casual.

 

Formal works better when it's the theme across the entire ship, and a certain tone is set throughout and most of the people are dressed similarly.

 

I happen to enjoy a traditional formal night, but I did not dine in The Grande because the special atmosphere throughout the ship was missing and I didn't want to stand out as being dressed up amongst a ship full of people who weren't.

 

Donna, I agree with you and do not agree with the poster who said your opinion on the topic is ridiculous. I, myself, would feel self-conscious all dolled up in formal attire on a ship of that size and be possibly one of only fifty or a hundred dressed that way.

 

We aren't booked on Anthem or Quantum, but if we were, I'm sure we would not dine at Grande.

That is one of my biggest problems with Dynamic Dining. I enjoy the whole experience of a formal night, not just eating a fancy dinner.

Note, these are (or used to be) big in the UK and the OP is from the UK. Here is America we have a different name for this undergarment. However, I don't care for the name so I will not post it here.

 

WOW. That type for "shirt" is not the type of wow I am looking for when I sail RC. If they don't allow men with tank tops in the MDR for breakfast I am not sure how this type of attire under a jacket could be acceptable for dinner. :confused:

 

I could only image what a man with lots of hair, as Allan Brooks would describe as a sweater, would look like wearing that shirt? :eek: Maybe a well used scouring pad. :p

Seriously, your entire cruise experience is based on doing what YOU like.

 

You like the spa? Not everyone likes that, but go and have a great time! It's your cruise!

You like the family pool? Not everyone likes that, but go and have a great time! It's your cruise!

 

You like snorkeling excursions? Not everyone likes that, but go and have a great time! It's your cruise!

 

You like the art auction? Not everyone likes that, but go and have a great time! It's your cruise!

 

You like the shopping for tanzanite? Not everyone likes that, but go and have a great time! It's your cruise!

 

You like the white party? Not everyone likes that, but go and have a great time! It's your cruise!

 

You like the silent party? Not everyone likes that, but go and have a great time! It's your cruise!

 

You like the prohibition party? Not everyone likes that, but go and have a great time! It's your cruise!

 

You like the best legs contest? Not everyone likes that, but go and have a great time! It's your cruise!

 

You like the rock climbing wall? Not everyone likes that, but go and have a great time! It's your cruise!

Many of those require special attire or equipment. You can still do those things without everyone on the ship doing it with you and have a wonderful time!

Even though this is going to be a continuous thread that will pop up with occasion here on CC, the Grande is 'formal every night' and formal has been re-defined to mean 'jackets for men' with no tie required.

 

Quantum hotel management DO send a reminder via the TV message system to each cabin booked at the Grande that formal attire is required at the Grande.

 

My personal experience on my sailing is that almost all of the guests entering the Grande were very appropriately dressed.

They should have turned him away. If you show up inappropriately dressed at a restaurant on land, you would not gain access.

 

People need to show respect for the rules.

If people want to not dress formally at The Grande, they should go on the first night (only).

We dined in the Grande two nights ago and they provided me a jacket to wear over my casual shirt/slacks combo. It was no big deal to me for one meal and I only really wore it till I had ordered and then it went on the back of my chair. I personally don't miss the formal nights, been there done that and with airlines getting stingier with luggage allowances I don't want to haul anymore formal wear across the country. I much prefer the Smart Casual approach with a pair of slacks and a nice shirt.

I never have a problem with these two. I walk up to the Solarium attendant and politely ask them to remove the children. I walk up politely to the Solarium attendant and politely ask them to find us seats based on the chair hog removal method.

 

The last 4 cruises we've been on, the attendants have been pro-active with the chair hogs and semi-so with the kids.

Again, I have a great story here where I just walked up and sat down in the "reserved" seats. What can they do? If they physically assault me, they will go to jail. If they scowl at me, so what?
