Rare LMaxwell Posted February 4, 2015 #1 Share Posted February 4, 2015 I was speaking to my PCC and asked about using OBC to pay gratuities and he said only for adults, there is no gratuity charged for children. New to NCL. Used to Royal where they charge everyone the same. What's the deal here? Kids pay gratuity on NCL or no?
StuckiTribe Posted February 4, 2015 #2 Share Posted February 4, 2015 I have not heard this yet and we are leaving on NCL this Saturday. That would be fabulous! I haven't tried to pre-pay my gratuities- anyone else heard this?
ChristinaN Posted February 4, 2015 #3 Share Posted February 4, 2015 Inaccurate information, I have pre-paid gratuities for all three of my children on our upcoming cruise on the Breakaway. I also paid gratuities for my children the last time I sailed NCL.
Rare LMaxwell Posted February 4, 2015 Author #4 Share Posted February 4, 2015 Why would a PCC tell me this then? He said NCL wouldn't charge for my child. Child is on the KSF promo, but still paying taxes, port fees, and insurance coverage. I challenged him but he insisted.
Rare LMaxwell Posted February 4, 2015 Author #5 Share Posted February 4, 2015 Oh, I am not trying to prepay. I don't mind it being charged against my account daily. I wanted to find out if I can use OBC against the gratuity charge.
SissasMomE Posted February 4, 2015 #6 Share Posted February 4, 2015 Everyone pays the $12 per person, per day. You can not use OBC towards this.

So, if I buy OBC through NCL, I can't use it to pay gratuities? Bummer! Guess I better prepay then. Thanks for the heads-up :) Sent from my iPad. Typos are inevitable. Sparkygirl Posted February 4, 2015 #12 Share Posted February 4, 2015 What category does OBC from a travel agent fall into? Clear as mud...it depends...you have to ask your travel agent if it is refundable or non refundable OBC. Pikaia Posted February 4, 2015 #14 Share Posted February 4, 2015 Where does it say that? In the Terms & Conditions. From the current promo: Onboard credit has no monetary value and is non-transferable. It may not be used toward onboard service charges or pre-purchased activities. http://www.ncl.com/nclweb/cruiser/cmsPagesPopup.html?pageId=wave15terms
Pikaia Posted February 4, 2015 #15 Share Posted February 4, 2015 I've only received non-refundable OBC from NCL and from Amex (when Amex OBC promo is in effect). I've received both refundable and non-refundable OBC from my travel agent. The refundable type was automatically put toward our Daily Service Charge. keichman Posted February 5, 2015 #20 Share Posted February 5, 2015 Sorry to hijack this thread into a different direction...but I have a question about refundable OBC. We've always been able to use our travel agent's OBC toward DSC, so I assume that means it was refundable. But that seems to imply that we can take with us whatever was unused...i.e. "refundable." Is that correct?
Love my butler Posted February 5, 2015 #21 Share Posted February 5, 2015 Gratuity or Daily Service Charge? The DSC applies to the kids as well. Gratuities are at your whim. It's actually called Discretionary Service Charge by NCL and it's all the same. Tip, gratuity, service charge. Semantics.
megann831 Posted February 5, 2015 #22 Share Posted February 5, 2015 Isn't all gratuity technically optional? I usually opt out of the prepaid gratuity and take care of it myself

njhorseman Posted February 5, 2015 #25 Share Posted February 5, 2015 (edited) It's actually called Discretionary Service Charge by NCL and it's all the same. Tip, gratuity, service charge. Semantics. To the surprise of no one who has read what you regularly post, you continue to spread this misinformation. The service charge and a tip/gratuity are two different things, and that's why they're covered by two separate NCL FAQs. Service Charge FAQ: http://www.ncl.com/faq#service-charge Tipping/Gratuity FAQ: http://www.ncl.com/faq#tipping A tip or gratuity is something you offer directly to a staff member to reward them for their outstanding service. You control how much, if anything, you tip any particular crew member. The service charge is collected by NCL, pooled, and distributed to staff under rules and formulas you are not privy to .
