New rules didn't start until sailings starting 15 May. You sailed prior to that date.

Yes, I am aware of that. My point was no one was checking to see that those entering were actually invited.

Ah. Yes, that was a shame. Hopefully they will be more vigilant under the new rules.

Just got off the Magic on Sunday.

The party was held in the show lounge. As far as I could tell, almost 100% of the seats were taken and people were standing along the wall in the back (only held on the first level).

They asked for all Platinums to stand - I would say maybe 50 - 60 people stood. They announced 6 (I think) Diamonds on board for the week. All the rest in the lounge were either Gold or not supposed to be there.

I am interested to see how the party will change.

No card, no admission, no exceptions. It's as easy as that and will control the amount of attendees.

That would be extremely easy to get around by pretending to "lose" your card and get a replacement. Then just give the old one to a guest with whom you wish to attend the party.

Since very few people in this world have integrity anymore that would probably work. Easiest is to simply enforce the system they currently have. You get a personalized invitation with your name on it. When you get to the door you either have an invitation and go in or don't have an invitation and go somewhere else.

So, attending the PGP is going to be like boarding? You show up at 2pm for the 5pm party?

Even if all they do is collect an invite from each person as they pass by, it will take time to collect invites from several hundred people. 2pm for a 5pm party is exaggerating, but it won't be a quick process.

Won't have a long line with only 50 to 100 people showing up. 5 minutes, tops, to collect 100 invitations. Being that every sailing I've been on collected the invites and that was with Golds included, continuing the process would be quick and painless.....with the possible exception of the loudmouth who thinks he can take half the boat in with him/her (just move him over and continue with the process).

So that cruise John Heald mentioned, with like 1400 past guests... Surely more than 100 were diamond and platinum?

Not at all. They used to collect the invites at the door and then they would have a drawing or two for prizes towards the end of the show.

All those with invites were accomodated in less then 10 mins.

Doubtful. Most were Gold and then you also had the reds and blues that were never invited to the party to begin with.

I am sure there are fluctuations, but I see the list when I get the one for one slot challenge at the casino cashier. My experience is that between the two it is usually between 150 to 200 people, seen it as high as 400 and as low as 100. Not very scientific but ........

Wouldn't it be a novel idea if peeps just worried about themselves. No invitation, don't go. If passengers just policed themselves and stopped the "they got in why shouldn't my partner" attitude that is so grade school things would work out much more smoothly. Oh...but less I forget...this will never happen since so many people are entitled and rules only apply to them when its convenient for them.

Agreed, they used to collect invitations at the door as pax filed in. It didn't really slow things down.

The root "problem" is that Carnivals' number of "Past Guests" has grown exponentially. Whereas until recently it was mostly a first-time cruiser line, now the ships are full of past guests and even Golds (even under the new system, requiring 24 days for Gold).

For a while the number of Platinums will be manageable (and Diamonds negligible) but at some point they'll have to revisit the Past Guest Party rules again as the number of Platinums grow. You can only fit a finite number of people into even the largest venue on the ship.

There will always be the exception -- the rule breakers -- those who feel entitled to go regardless of whether or not they qualify and then bring others with them.

So sad what some adults will do for a free drink! :(

Suggestion: Move the "party" to 10 AM and only serve coffee and danish. I am sure that the number of attendees would drop drastically.

They actually do that at times. Our 2006 med cruise on the Liberty the past guest party was 10:30 am on one of the few sea days of a 12 day cruise. From my perspective it just did not feel right.....

Well said. I am totally baffled at how revved up folks have gotten about an event that doesn't even rise to the level of what, on land, anyone would call a "party." This is the umpteenth thread here yakking about the past guest party. I've always been eligible to go, have done so maybe half the time, don't understand for the life of me why anyone thinks it's a big deal, except that Carnival has been offering it for so long they probably can't think of a gentle way to get rid of it.

I was on the conquest and attended my last party as gold. The invite said it was the hottest party of the cruise. The floor of the theater was mostly full. The food managers were present and everyone had plenty to eat and drink. The handful of diamond members went on the stage. I would guess 50 or more platinum stood up. Everyone else was gold. They showed the ships. Nothing else. A few danced. No tickets for free cruise were sold. Party over in 45 minutes. I suspect the next party will be in smaller venue. I had more fun at two parties set up by groups I knew. As they say "you don't know what you got til it's gone."

Would certainly resolve the issue of passengers going just for the free alcohol since none would be served and would also reduce the number of legit and non legit attendees!:)

While true, this was a very port intensive cruise. I can't remember the reason but I do remember asking John Heald at the time (he as our CD) and his explanation as to why and what time rang true. This was of course 9 years ago. FWIW.

Au contraire......I have seen many a cruiser already getting their drunk on by 9am. By 10:30am they were already halfway to Sloshedtown!

We enjoy the past guest party and will always come as it is right before dinner.

However cant imagine coming to one in the morning. My stomach would have words with me after.

Wonder why they didnt do it in the evening one for early seating and one for late?
